CMH or Congressional Medal of Honor are usually awarded posthumously, as as it's the sacrifice for you brothers/sisters in arms that sets it apart from other medals. It's awarded by the President
It would be along the lines of the Victoria Cross
They weren't going in to save ... but recover the fallen. No man left behind. All efforts will be made to make sure everyone goes home. Even the dead

I don't believe that to be technically correct. When their first helicopter was hit he was blown out. This damaged helicopter withdrew and made an emergency landing a few miles away. They volunteered to go back once they could access an undamaged helicopter. Their team mate was not confirmed dead until they found his body. That was why the team was only five SEAL operators plus Chapman (USAF STS JTAC).
Given a team mate of his was imbedded with a Delta Unit on a nearby hill it's likely he was a Tier 1 Operator. SEAL Units can be Tier 2 or Tier 1 depending on which unit you are discussing as can JTAC operators
The whole mess started when Chapman and the SEAL Team tried to land to set up fire control for the sector at the designated location and were ambushed by an enemy fire team that had apparently deduced this as being a likely location for such a post.
Look it up. SEAL Command tried to block it and rushed a Medal of Honor for the the SEAL team leader (after it was apparent that Chapman was going to get the Medal) because they left Chapman behind. It was only after the new tech allowed a much deeper analysis. In the fog of battle, I believe the team leader came across Roberts' body and thought it was Chapman's which resulted in him thinking Chapman was dead.

As a veteran I would like to point out, if it hasn't been mentioned already, that MOST MoH recipients are dead when they are awarded this. It's extremely rare for them to be awarded this in-person.
The requirements for verification by living witnesses (prior to this video) made this medal rare. In those cases where confirmation could not be verified, I believe the highest award possible were the branches' Distinguished Service Medals. [Army Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, Air Force Cross], followed after by Silver Star and Bronze Star.
That is not entirely accurate.....there have been 3,502 MOH awarded. Of those, 618 have been awarded posthumously, or died during or immediately after the action that earned them them Medal of Honor. That is 17.7% . In other words, 82% of those service members that earned the MOH, survived the action and were awarded the medal in person. I wrote a paper about the Medal of Honor and the public's misconceptions about its history, and that was one of the myths that most of the general public as well as service members believed to be true, when in reality, the opposite is true. I wrote it in my Advanced Leader Course in the Army and have met 5 MOH recipients.
@@CaptainFrost32 the Distinguished Service Medal is its own award, apart from the Distinguished Service, Navy, and Air Force Crosses.
Actually, since 2008, there's been over 36 MOH awarded to living military.

Its funny you mention Valhalla, it is what I thought of as well. The requirements were met, a "Valkyrie" watching over head as a man puts all of himself into one final act, an act which changed the very battlefield as he enacted his will upon it when the need was most dire. Bravery, Sacrifice, Resiliency... and much much more. Every aspect was met.
It is very much, a retelling of the legends of old in modern times, and much more rare due to the nature of modern arms.

My wife’s cousin Salvatore Giunta was the first living Medal of Honor recipient since the Vietnam war. He actually gave his medal to his Unit. He said if it wasn’t for them he would have never survived. If you want to read his story his book is “Living with Honor” by Salvatore Giunta

This is the real reason you don't mess with the USA, we may have a lot of technology, and we may invest a lot in our military, but the real investment is the heart and soul of our soldiers and their undying, relentless will to fight for their brothers.
That's the Damn Truth!!! The first port I ever hit was in Turkey. I was asked by 2 Turk military members if I knew why nobody really wanted to go to war with America. I told them that those of us who join are a little crazy, and love our country. They said that it's because we were not afraid to die like most other militaries. That we join knowing the potential risk of death yet we do it. It's a mindset, and willingness to do what other's can't, or won't. But at the end of the day most of us would do it all over again

If you want an idea of how high an honor it is to get the medal, in the military it is usually normal for an enlisted soldier or a lower-ranked officer to salute the higher ranking officer. EVERY single soldier (including Generals) MUST salute a medal of honor recipient first whenever they wear their Medal of Honor.
It’s not mandatory, just often done. Also, it is required (not just often done) for lower ranking members to salute higher ranking officers when outside of non salute areas like combat zones.
It’s the same with the Victoria Cross, which is awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. While not mandatory, it just shows how much respect is shown to the award.
Hell they even talk about it and show it here, at the 1:51 mark, when Australian SASR Trooper Mark Donaldson was awarded his Victoria Cross….

@@TheCuriousNoob I was clarifying the original statement. Obviously most people in the military don't qualify for a MoH, and those that do are often dead. It's a very high bar to reach, and they definitely did great deeds to achieve it.

As a former operator, the "body" is still a0 team member, and we all come home no matter what!! We treat the situation as if they are still breathing!! What you see here as a hero, is an operator doing his job! This is what we trained for!!

I have seen this about a dozen times and every time hits me hard. As I write this, tears are streaming down my face. My utmost respect to Sgt. Chapman. In my life I will never do something so honorable and sacrificial. You are a true hero sir.

Clint Romesha, Medal of Honor recipient himself, put it well: "They don't give these out when things go right...a lot of things went wrong that day." Being isolated Chapman was in about the most tactically screwed position a soldier can find themselves. His determination to continue to fight, alone, and suffering multiple gunshot and shrapnel wounds, in the face of overwhelming enemy fire superiority, is astounding. The fact that they were not able to overrun his position is itself quite impressive.
I was in basic training when he got officially awarded the Medal Of Honor. It was the only type of video we got to watch the entire time and I swear you could hear a pin drop in this huge room with around 500 people in it. Everytime I see this video my heart swells with pride and sorrow.

The US Medal of Honor is akin to the UK's Victoria Cross.

Along the same line, Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier of all time. He also had a career after, that you will be surprised by. Correction the most decorated soldier of world War II. No slight to all the other brave soldiers in history.✌

I started to watch this last night on TV, I had to step away as I have already seen the Chapman footage, my heart hurts for this mans last hours. Anyone who watches this through and is not affected by this man's shear courage under fire is not human. That is the epitome of an American Hero, selfless courage for the good of those around him, giving his life for the others.
I disagree heavily with how our military is used in general, but I love the men and women in the service. They are something to be very proud of for the most part. The upper echelons and the people in the government above them, maybe not so much, but the troops themselves are brilliant at what they do, and generally very stand up individuals.
Unfortunately, senior officers have to deal with politicians on an almost daily basis. It seems to be rare for one not to be captured by the mingling, thus respect is sometimes lost.

This gets me every time. I served in the military in Iraq. I worked with some of the British soldiers. They were great soldiers.
I had an opportunity to interact with Royal Commandos that came through Two-Nine while I was stationed there. They were crazy in a good way.

My grandpa, my dad's stepdad and my brother served in the military. Because of them I have the absolute highest respect for the men and women of our armed forces.
For men like this I stand up and salute my flag. What a touching story. What a hero!
Thinking of all the terrible ways you can be taken out of this world I don't think it could get much worse. Being all alone, suffering several mortal wounds and knowing your time is soon coming to an end. Just try to imagine the extreme pain this man must have been in and how hard it must have been just to even breathe much less move. Knowing you have absolutely zero chance to survive and still finding courage to fight til your very last breath. All in the hopes you might save your brothers from the same fate. What a true hero. My heart and respect goes out to all of our veterans.

Here is how much it takes to earn a Medal of Honor:
My friend Desmond earned a Bronze Star, 2 Silver Stars, and 1 Gold Star in one act in Afghanistan.
He earned the Bronze Star for veering his Humvee to the right to allow an incoming insurgent RPG to hit his driver side.
His first Silver star was earned after he evacuated 3 of the other soldiers in the humvee while being shelled by the enemy.
His 2nd silver star was earned for dispatching 3 rushing enemies as the evacuation of the vehicle took place.
And he earned his gold star by dragging 2 of his comrades behind cover as he took 4 bullet wounds and 7 shrapnel wounds from RPGs.
He survived the war, but not the aftermath. He did 2 tours in India, 2 in Iraq, and 2 in Afghanistan despite only being on contract for 2 combat tours.
8 months after coming home from his second tour in Afghanistan, he took his own life. Myself and his brother were the ones who found them.
I am sorry for your loss, but I also thank your friend's family for his service.

Too many of our warriors coming home are not fully taken care of to get the help they deserve & need! Too many are homeless or commit suicide. But along to same lines I highly suggest the story of Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez actions during Vietnam and also the story of Master Sergeant Gary Grodan and Sergeant First Class Randall Shughart actions in Somalia in 1993

It is difficult to watch an American while he is fighting to defend his fellow man knowing full well that he is likely to die because of his actions. He is much more than a hero. He is a savior who deserves a lot more than he is given credit for.
I've seen that video many times. Tears fronm this 64 old man every time.

I read the book, it’s an amazing read, also, I had no idea how tough and hard it is to become an Air Force combat controller. Months and months and tough training. Amazing life story.

Much love and respect man. Thanks for watching this. Fact: at 10,469ft. (3,191m) this is the highest elevation engagement (officially) in U.S. military history. And Czechns and Uzbeks are commonly recruited by the Taliban, ISIS, and othe terrorist organizations. Also there is a movie slated to come out portraying these events. I thinks some time next year. Also, the 105mm howitzer's was most likely firing high explosive rounds, who's safe stand off distance is 550m. so yeah he was definitely in a bad spot when they opened fire on that ridge.
That man would say "I am not a hero but i have served with a few" he was a true hero by definition a hero is anyone who would put himself or herself in harms way to protect others.....i carry 4 purple hearts 2 Bronze Stars and a Silver Star i am no hero but SGT Chapman surely was

And now you know why the Medal of Honor is awarded only for conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty. In the Navy, when high-ranking dignitaries like POTUS visit a ship they receive eight bells in their honor. MoH recipients receive the same honor. As it should be. Cheers....
You do need to read that book! I've recently read it again and it tugs at your heart strings and makes you ask yourself, "could I step up like that if I had to?"
Chapman was recovered and is buried in Pennsylvania. He was True hero and Buried with full honors. The medal of Honor is always presented by the President at the time which in this case was Obama. The medal was actually upgraded from the Distinguished Service medal as it was odd paper error that the service medal was even given in the first place. He proved that the might be against you but you can win given the right circumstances.
MoH winners are often first awarded a lesser medal, such as the Distinguished Service Cross. It is because the process for awarding a medal like the DSC is usually much shorter than the process for awarding the MoH.

I've seen this video many times and it is more amazing each time. Many of my dad WWII friends have told me that many heroic acts such as this occurred many times but they were unseen and are still unknown. I did enjoy watching this with you. Take care!
My father was a non-military contractor. But he has said the response to a MOH recipient is the most dramatic he has eve seen. While touring a battleship an announcement was sent out that a MOH recipient was coming on deck. The entire crew ran to deck and came to attention, captain included. They stood in salute the entire time he boarded for inspection. And nothing more than a walk around the ship, some sailors were brought to tears at having him on board.

I don't know if the movie "Hacksaw Ridge" has been suggested as something to watch on your own time, but if you can find that American movie (which is true), you should. It's about an American medic in WW2, who saved tons of lives on that ridge.

George M. Cohan an entrainer, playwright, song writer and more. He was awarded The Congressional Medal Of Honor in 1936 for his impact on WWI. His patriotic songs and plays boosted moral for the soldiers and rallied the American people like no other since. His life is an amazing story and his songs still live on today.

Thank you for watching this video. I watch this video when I begin losing faith in my fellow Americans. I cry everytime I watch this action, I know it by heart, but I still cry. I spent 12yrs in the USAF and am so proud that Msgt. Chapman represented the Air Force with such valor. I can't begin to imagine myself in his position, I'm not the man he was, but I'm so thankful there are such incredibly brave men who put service above self. Msgt. Chapman left a wife and 2 small girls behind, again I can't imagine his thoughts of his family at this time. May he be accepted into Valhalla and praised till time ends. Thanks again, I want everyone to know this man's story.

The medal of honor is the USA version of the Victoria Cross. It is the highest honor a soldier can be give. Most of them are awarded posthumously.
Try the old movie called "To Hell and Back". It's the fictionalized autobiography of Audie L. Murphy, arguably the most decorated soldier in US military history.

I read the book, the real tragedy here is the Navy tried to cover this up because the leader of the seal team was awarded the Medal of Honor for this fight. If the Air Force never released this footage John’s sacrifice would have gone unnoticed.

There is a heaven. Our Lord Himself is what woke John up that morning before dawn. He wasn't finished with Chapman just yet. He was about to use him to show you the power of sacrifice and a measure of what Jesus did for His sheep.

We are a big military family, right now I have 3 grandsons in the military, 1 has been deployed. My husband and brother in law were both in the Navy, my husband during Vietnam. They both became police officers. I had 2 uncles in WW2, one won 2 bronze stars and no one knew it until I found it doing Ancestry. I have been able to find documents all the way back to the 1600’s. So we have been defending this piece of land before it became The USA. I can not tell you how proud we are of our families service. I also have a son who dedicated 22 yrs to the USAF. Also a niece that gave 20 yrs 🇺🇸🇺🇸

I myself was involved in many battles and I lost several of my men. And I know without a doubt they would be proud that people like you still remember what it takes to be free in a very dangerous and evil world. Freedom is not free and lives are not cheap, and I think you guys understand that. Thomas Jefferson said that the tree of liberty must be quenched with the blood of patriots from time to time in order for there to be a truly free people. And I have seen first hand that he was telling the truth even 180 years later. By the way, Thomas Jefferson was a American president around 180 years ago for those watching who aren't from America.
