- This thrifting video got held up until now, just when we need one! Come shop with me (some weeks back) in the Bourbon Capital of the World. There’s lots to see, and plenty of price info to help your future thrifting.
The first half of the video is spent at Peddlers Mall, a new vendor mall outside Bardstown, Kentucky’s 1790s downtown. Showcases and spaces are filling with reseller merchandise of all kinds. We ferret out the antique, vintage and collectible wares, highlighting everything from iron counter scales and wheels to Murano glass and a lovebirds clock.
“Buy my pottery…or else!” There’s a few good stories about things we see here, as well as tons of tips on identifying and valuing items throughout…depression and kitchen glass, a Jim Beam clock, even a beautifully kept 1930s enamel stove. Several fakes and forgeries are identified to educate resellers and collectors as well.
After making a nice haul there, it’s off to visit an antique mall I’ve passed but not seen before. Sparrow Antique Mall greeted us with a Star Wars Stormtrooper, plus offerings of scarce early roadside signs and advertising, mid-century decor and an attack of the killer Tomato Ware! We also discover whether I pass the Ingo grip test.

Saw many things i liked. I have 2. Milk glass fenton lamps. I paid 80.00 a piece for them in the 80s. And jusr recently i started collecting hall dishes. I think i saw pieces at both stores. I have seen pieces on ebay and i got 2 bowls from Misty. Thats the start of my collection.

Shipping isn't so fun, but it isn't as daunting as it seems once you try it. My suggestion is read and follow the postal regulations to a T and then you'll never have damage or get burned. Misty on Thrifter Junker Vintage Hunter and Jeffrey on Real Nifty Vintage both did shipping tutorials during the lockdown in April that might be useful to you

It was filmed a few months ago before I knew more about volume control but the info was useful I think, I don't do a lot of thrift stores here because they're not good but these vendor malls are. Fat Birds live an hour from here on the town that has the National Quilt Museum, textiles are very popular with collectors here! And yes, I bought the blue Swann because of Ashley and I'm glad she influenced me

The Antique Nomad It’s a small world. I lived in La Mesa and rented an old historic home called The Hodgson House on Pasadena Avenue. I moved away in 2004 to San Marcos which is North County, San Diego. I still go to my dentist in La Mesa. The 2 large antique malls are long gone and downtown La Mesa has lost some of its charm. 14:10 omg THANK YOU so much FOR THAT !!! now i know its pilgrim ,,that lil yellow vase ! my dad got my mother one with a flower in it when i was born and i had it til i was 40 and it literally disappeared out of my house one day.POOF ! i suspect my kiddos were roughhousing and broke it .but boy if so they sure kept poker faces. i have been looking for one since i started reselling a few years ago,but never saw the exact shape til now makes sense i was born in 1972

Sorry I missed you live. I could have added commentary to your locations. I spent 16 years at Sparrow Drive Antique Mall. The change in the quality of merchandise and vendors there was heartbreaking. We had fabulous dealers 10+ years ago. Ownership changes and the death of dealers truly turns things upside down. You also toured the Peddlers Mall I am currently in. I have no idea how reopening that venue will go. I just want the opportunity to have an estate sale or auction. I am done, finished, stick a fork in me. I could never time the stock market and have failed miserably in predicting when to exit the antiques market. I see resellers spending at a premium to acquire inventory during the shutdown, but I have serious reservations about the economy coming out the other side. I have horrible memories regarding the changes after 9/11 and skyrocketing gas prices. I have no good answers or predictions about how this one will turn out. Thanks.
You're in there? That's great! Which booth? I did find some nice things there to resell. I do recall Sparrow Drive, I went there years ago when it was fairly new and it was good, I was disappointed to see it go. I'd say the demographic and generational changes have affected the industry much over the last decade.
I also understand that it's hard to predict what's next. I'm selling some items I'm done with in lots to other UA-cam resellers who can't get out so they get stuff at a price where they can still profit. Market timing is impossible in any market but I imagine things will slow down for a bit and that usually means the decorator and impulse buyer leaves for awhile so I'm thinking to avoid large items. I understand your thoughts, this has made me contemplate my future business and how/where to adjust. I'll be glad to help you with your items as possible, contact me anytime you're ready by my email
The Antique Nomad I have 2 booths in Peddlers. I was selling off things to benefit the local Humane Society. I didn’t even make a pin prick in the size of my hoard. It makes me sick the shear volume I still have. I was letting the booths sell down to combine both into one. I was truly getting depressed. You were in one of my booths with the mixing bowl, tray, and lanterns. It is difficult to make decisions going forward with all the current uncertainty out there. Plenty of time on my hands to come up with liquidation strategies. I want a swift purge. I have procrastinated long enough. I did contribute substantial amounts to the animals. I feel good about that.
Rickey Donald I really liked your stuff!, It was obvious there were better things than usual in a vendor Mall in your space! I think you had a sign saying it was helping animals which is also truly great. I absolutely get how long it takes to sell off a collection at retail, I spent a year closing out at one Mall in Oregon I used to sell through. We can find ways to sell things faster. BTW I apologize that I made an example of your ships lamp, it's a great piece that's not unworthy of your price but I was trying to educate resellers about retail vs wholesale. .. I've been getting comments from resellers that I don't talk enough about pricing so I went way the other direction on this one
The Antique Nomad no offense taken. I did try to get close to retail to pay rent and benefit the animals. We still have massive collections I never considered selling there. Black Americana, 150+ Vintage Flamingos, massive pottery collection, tobacco tins, massive paper ephemera, primitives out the nose, depression glass, and on and on. I did sell all the railroad lanterns at a premium. I have some very unusual and difficult to find local advertising. I have no idea what is even in the unit when I closed the antique mall. I have enough inventory to fill a semitrailer truck. Sad! A gymnasium would be the floor space necessary for a estate sale. Better stop thinking, I am hyperventilating.

In the 70s and 80d I bought some ‘pretty’ new glassware and the first thing I did was take the labels off. Aaaaah.....got rid of all of it and now I look for it.
Well of course! Most folks still do that with new items today. It takes a generation for people to care about all that

I apologize, this was done a few months ago before I had better knowledge and equipment so I had to use a stabilizer and that can fuzz the edges a bit
I don't know why but we always ended up with the restaurants that were mob fronts. Prime Italian next to my house for over 20 years that's what that was😮 flakey Jakes in Northridge. And the list goes on and on. My dad would always read about it in the newspaper or hear about it on the local news.

Our laws (since 1891) stated they must not do so, but the same greedy politicians who rushed to sign Most Favored Nation trade status so all our consumer good industries could be sent over there for production were reluctant to enforce the laws they are sworn to uphold until enough collectors complained that they were shamed into enforcing them. And yes, I am a little bitter about that!

Really liked this! There were some water sets, along the way, I would've had to have grabbed...me and my water sets 😏 A lot of really interesting items. Yes I like both Florentine I and Ii, I'm partial to yellow depression glass and those came in that happy color!

Hi George, you are so knowledgable, I love your video's. But, I think you made a mistake on here, the corn teapot was Shawnee but the S& P were not. I have collected Shawnee for many years and I'm pretty sure those were not made by Shawnee. Shawnee did make the corn S&P but a little different style.
I think you're correct, I took a second look and the green sheaths project out more. I believe Stanford China made a similar line, I didn't pick them up while I was filming like I should have!

Just a comment on the repos that have flooded the market. One issue I would address when looking at a piece of valuable pottery was - was the weight of item correct in addition to normal wear on the bottom I would expect in addition to the color of the "feet" of, let's say, a vase. That part was unglazed and should over the years have picked up a dingy color in addition to ground in stuff.
The weight though can tell a great deal as well as size. Usually those pieces that a cast made from an original piece did not allow for shrinkage that happens in the firing process. It's a very small amount but with that along with weight should make you suspicious.
Familiarize yourself with the real deal including factory glaze colors and what is the right amount of sheen a glaze should or should not have.
I used the weight test also when looking at antique wood bowls. Really old bowls weigh less than the newer fakes on.
That's all really well stated and good advice! You're right about old wood bowls, they lose moisture and weight over time, just like furniture does
@@TheAntiqueNomad It gets real tricky with gold applied pottery like Little Red Riding Hood and Shawnee Smiley articles.
The best way to train your eye to catch it is put the real one next to a repo and you can see it difference in the gold. There is a major difference to my eye. I bought both types of cookie jars at flea markets long before they got popular and made a killing on them in the late 1990's.
Just a side comment on that Loetz lamp shown in a more recent vid, it looked like a married piece to me...sloppy work where the shade slipped into the top part.
Oh my goodness yes.....just terrible that the fake Hull from China was permitted to have U.S.A on the bottom. But just as you pointed out.....even if a buyer wasn't aware of the repros....the quality just isn't the same at the real deal. Remember how people used to fight over Hull in the 1980's? Oh woe is me for the old days! I enjoyed your shopping trip.
When I started, you couldn't keep matte glaze Hull in stock! So sad about the reproductions, I'm glad guys like us can tell these younger resellers the difference
Oh gosh yes! My best advise to young collectors is please stop Googling everything and get out into the world! My best education came from attending good quality antiques shows and learning from old time collectors and dealers. Nothing like feeling, smelling, rubbing, thumping and handling the real stuff!
Absolutely! There's nuances you can't see in an online photo. I'm hopeful we will get to do more shows but I imagine it will be awhile
I would never reach my destination. I would always be stopping at all these antique stores along the highway.
Glassmakers need to take note about what they Make... Number 1 , ashtrays, People don't smoke indoors as much or use cigars or pipes and even if they do they don't want to clean ashtrays and have disposable alternatives 2.- paper weights, unneeded these days, 3.- vases, people again have many available disposable alternatives for just holding fresh flowers and decorative vases used to do anything are not a Big item 4.- table Ware,,, again disposable, light and easy to clean and microwave safe versus old fashion Ware is what they should be making... What they should be making is things used for building like nice tiles and window materials
I like the concept of glass tiles and I know there's a market for them! I don't personally agree with the use of disposable alternatives for much of anything, the landfills are clogging with them. Glass pipe makers seem to be doing booming business thanks to legalization of things that tobacco smokers don't smoke, I think that's why ashtrays are still a thing. I do agree though that the world is awash in certain things and that people may want to consider making things beyond the usual
Ashtrays can be used as catch-alls, artist’s palettes, and other things I’ve heard of but don’t remember. No need to add them to landfill. Paperweights-I don’t disagree but some people love just looking at the galaxies therein and considering the artistry.
So glad that you mentioned the items having images of the twin towers before 911 are valuable...I thrifted a picture of the twin towers( one large pic, one small pic and a written history of the twin towers in one frame) that also has an explanation behind the idea and design of the towers...the pictures all have a mat around them but I am not sure if they are acid free and the frame is a chintzy one from the 70's or 80's...it is those frames that were one continuous piece of aluminum folded around the picture..one side keeps coming off...I wonder if I should reframe the whole picture or sell it as is...
Hello! I guess it depends how it looks. If I'm reselling, I usually leave the cost to the buyer (they'll want their own frame anyhow to match their house)...on the other hand, if you're keeping it (even for awhile), acid-free mounting and matting is a must to protect it.
@@TheAntiqueNomad I truly appreciate your feedback....I am new to the resale business...I buy things that I enjoy and people generally snatch the items up at flea market and yard sales, most likely because I used to sell stuff dirt cheap. Later on, I see what other people are selling the same items for and am disappointed in myself for not selling at a better price. I have been following different sellers to learn things and also follow Docror Lori...well thanks again for your kindness.

the perfume Chanel puts embalming fluid in their perfumes to make it last so long,I heard that somewhere not too long ago and I have some Chanel and I've had it for a long time the smell has never changed on it, so I guess in bombing fluid is pretty good stuff for perfumes

I like the expression they use on U.K. antique shows where the presenter clearly thinks the item is over priced but doesn’t want to be rude They say ‘ it’s all of the money’ ! The wheel looks like a wheel from a penny farthing. I love bridge lamps but you don’t really see them in the U.K.

Just wondering but on a lot of pieces you shared the makers marks, but on some you didn't, is that because those other pieces didn't have one? Being new to resell, the marks are something I would like to learn more about.

Sometimes the marks are hard to film, sometimes it's just trying to fit a lot into a short time...but if I think a mark is interesting or important, I'll try to mention it!

I hope she had the swan as well, I thought I saw it in one of her videos! I did send her a little green satin glass swan recently. She's got me back to looking at covered animal dishes again!
I saw it on a video where she went to her first auction where a majority of the items were on hayracks...where it had rained and everything was soaked....she kept saying," I want that duck on a nest." I may be totally wrong. ...lol...I'll have to watch the video again...I used to see a bunch of the chickens on a nest at almost every garage sale that I went to years ago and they could barely give them away...now they are popular and hard to find...I picked up a small bunny on a nest just before Easter...it is clear glass and probably a repro but got it dirt cheap and it is cute...I've been hunting for a ceramic Christmas tree that won't break the bank. Years ago a friend of my mom made her a large, all white ceramic Christmas tree with red birds all over it...it was so pretty!!
The white trees with birds are a great look! Hard to find. I also used to see a ton of hens in nests but they're memorable to a new generation of collectors because they were on so many houses, my mom had the deep blue carnival glass version in the 1970s
@@TheAntiqueNomad I bet your mom's Carnival glass hen on nest was beautiful to look at!! I've never seen one like that and I absolutely love carnival glass! And yes, I hope that my mom still has the ceramic tree but I think that she may have sold it a a yard sale when she moved awhile back. So sad, lol..

All your knowledge of these items is literally only useful if you find them in the junkyard... Or in thrift stores, garage sales , estate lots etc... Purchase at antique stores that Know the exact value is no for different than going to retail stores to buy whatever.... All your looking for then is a sale ,,, further,, if you do find a sale or a good buy your going to slap a premium in it that converts it to retail or a bad buy... Makes little sense to me ,, other than ti try and shop at the places I mentioned,,, and then, if it's not there,, you have to accept that it's not there...... The other thing to do is to try and be ahead of the curve and predict what will become collected but that's a magic trick and even if you did it that window wouldn't be Open long and it really only works if you got a lot of money to buy it all up early
I agree with you about not chasing trends! They fade fast. My knowledge has made it possible to find real bargains in supposedly "full priced" retail antique stores, I have used about 30 different methods of sourcing over the years and I got good buys (and made mistakes) in every one of them.
The definition of picker is one who finds the unrecognized or less-than-retail valuable. Why so negative? It’s a fun and valuable hobby or way of life. We are all capitalists because we must be.
