this is a totally normal video but the title speaks volumes. for some of us, all we have left is the ability to create art because that seems to be the one thing they can’t take.
@ hi, friend. Remember that you’re not alone, and to take care of yourself today. Drink some water, go for a walk, do something you love. Sending you hugs if you like them, otherwise just affirmations of love. I’m telling this to myself too, so I hope this isn’t preachy! Solidarity and kindness to you. 🖤
As a black woman from the south i really appreciate this video :( my mind has been running 7000 miles a minute worried about my safety and rights as a human. Thank you so much you’ve helped me calm my brain down.
I just want to say I really appreciate your kindness. This doesn't affect you really at all living in Europe, but you're being really sweet to all the sad Americans (of which I am one) and it's very much appreciated. I will now enjoy some pretty rainbow art! It's so satisfying!
I do this technique all the time. I make long straight lines of the glaze on wax paper, once it’s dry you just have to life the wax paper and the chunks crumple on their own. Much easier!!! Love the video!
Thank you for your sympathy. US citizen and potter here, absolutely devastated about the election results. I really love your result, it turned out beautiful! I still use commercial glazes (still new, I am working on learning glaze formulation) and I wonder if this technique could be used to make Amaco oatmeal sprinkles, since oatmeal has such interesting effects on certain base glazes. I think I might give it a try. lol
It feels like we’re being pulled along in the undertow of gillead. Reading that back, it sounds so dang dramatic… but it does feel that way, as a Canadian.
@@PsychGal1980 as a fellow Canadian who was in Los Angeles for a large chunk of 2017, and remember the fear in the confusing days when the border was closed, I don't think you're being dramatic at all. I've been having a surreal anxiety attack all morning.
On a day when it’s hard to even know what I need, I appreciate this showing up on my feed and showing me at least one small way to help me feel more connected and grounded. Art is so important to the soul! ❤❤
You’re fantastic. Thank you for the huge smile! Oh my gosh I caught myself ear to ear as you were opening the kiln, and I sent some heart bubbles and gratitude thoughts out your way. Thank you for being so thoughtful and generous. Your heart is special.
If you're interested in filtering the air in your studio, there's a DIY air filter called a corsi-rosenthal box that can be made with a few furnace filters, a box fan, and some cardboard. They work really well for airborne particulates like dust or smoke. You can make even smaller versions from PC fans and the same filters, and they're quite quiet and really clean a lot of air.
"Bowls are hard." Is the thing you have said that I resonate with most. I can throw bottles, and mugs, and pots all day long, but give me a bowl and it will become a plate within minutes.
A fruity rainbow bowl is just what I needed thank you T>T Also as a pottery student thank you for saying bowls are hard I’ve made like dozen in the last two or so months and I’m only just now getting them looking actually good
I personally find it easier to mix speckles with a bit of my base glaze and paint that mixture on with a large paintbrush, but I've never used dip glazes so I'm not sure how well it would work with those, since they're a lot thinner than paint on glazes
@@georgethecat5150 Your flippancy is not appreciated. Republicans won all of the branches of federal government. There will be no moderating influence from Democrats, and the Republicans will take full advantage of that. Republicans support large businesses over absolutely everything. They don't care about the environment, reproductive rights, privacy, job site safety, labor rights, racial equality, gender equality, access to healthcare, safe drinking water, science based medicine, effective criminal justice, high quality and reasonably priced education, or anything that benefits the common man. They talk a big game about helping blue collar workers, but all of their policies boil down to letting big businesses and wealthy people take advantage over everyone else. We've lost a lot in this election. And that's the assuming that Project 2025 (google it) doesn't come into play.
I love this! It reminds me of the artist Yayoi Kusama’s “Obliteration Room,” which was this interactive art piece where you could stick colored dots on the walls and furniture of a room painted completely white. It looks super cool by the end (much like your piece!)
Interesting that there was so much to mindful plan and think and control to make a spontaneous looking confetti painting 🎉 I did the Methode in workshop where they reuse the left over glaze from other painters (dry on reused paperplates) and of course I thought, too : did I over done the sparkles 😬 but all went finde for my bowl 🎉
Mia can you do this with liquid glaze as it spins? As a kid at the county fair, I made a spin art project, and this brought me right back to that moment - It is super beautiful - your mom is going to love it!
Putting your gorgeous bowl in front of a fan will make it dry unevenly and warp. If you will put your bowl on your potter’s wheel and let the fan blow on it while the bowl continuously turns, it will produce even drying and reduce the possibility of warping.
Suggestion to mostly fill the bowl with white, then pour it out while rotating. Perhaps over a larger tub to catch excess. At 21:29 you can see where the white glaze dips overlapped. And also, maybe a clear glaze over the speckles? Might have to use a spray bottle for that. Why bisque fire the glaze bits?
seconding what i've seen, it looks like an inside-out jawbreaker! I immediately thought "oh yeah this reminds me of my childhood" when you did the reveal lol
me and my mom make a lot of pottery but shes had back surgery recently so we havent been able to. so ive been living vicariously through these videos and its been so great. i genuinely love your content, its a big cheer up. especially today.

I live at home with parents I cannot come out to, and I'm afraid that I'll never get to medical transition. I appreciate videos like this. Get my mind off of the election. Today my brain has been a constant endless back and forth stream of "oh no, the election! My rights!" and the Raiders March (the Indiana Jones theme).
I'm a mom and I can't IMAGINE not being 100000% accepting of identity/gender/sexuality, especially if it made my kid's life happier and more authentic. Wish I could give you a huge hug and full family acceptance and whatever care you needed for this, so you can live YOUR life in YOUR way. Parental love should never be conditional!!
Thank you for posting this. I've decided today I'm gonna try to drastically cut down my UA-cam watching, for my mental health, and hopefully this beautiful video is one of the last ones I see.
Thank you so much for this video ❤ made my heart happy. I wonder if it would be worth using an air purifier when working with these dry glaze materials. Not sure if that might be more effective than airing out?
Interesting way to make speckles. I use a dropper and a teflon mat to dry the drops. Then I just roll the teflon mat to loosen them and pour into little plastic cups marked with the color :)
Hey, can I ask what temperature you're firing at? Is this a midfire glaze/piece? Or do you know if it makes a difference, when it comes to pre-firing them at bisque, what the final firing temp will be?
Looks awesome. I did notice a crack across the whole plate before the final firing. Will that affect the durability of the piece, or does the glaze super glue it together so it's not a problem?

that reveal! was feeling so down this morning. thank you mia for gracing my screen.
an honor ❤️
Today I learned that you can put glaze in a bisque fire. I would’ve never thought that it wouldn’t have turned into a puddle of glass.
I'm probably not the only one here who is not here primarily to learn-you are just such an engaging and delightful person that I became a subscriber.
You need this glaze as it’s own collection on different items. This is amazzzing
Needed this one today, and for the next 4 years...
it is giving giant jawbreaker. I love it.
Love this so much! Great job! Thank you for the gift of beauty and joy on a day that seems so dark and scary.
