  • I went to Brighton to see the first Earthship built in the UK and still the only one in England.
This is the full tour filmed on May 2021.
Thanks to Low Carbon to let me film everything. You can find out more about it on: lowcarbon.co.uk/ Please consider donating to their page.
But do you know what an earthship is?
An Earthship is a type of passive solar earth shelter that is made of both natural and upcycled materials such as earth-packed tires, pioneered by architect Michael Reynolds.
Earthships are predicated upon the idea that there are six human needs which can be addressed through environmentally sustainable building design:
Energy: Thermal and/or solar heating and cooling, solar and wind electricity
Garbage management: Reuse and recycling built into construction and daily living
Sewage treatment: Self-contained sewage treatment and water recycling
Shelter: Building with natural and recycled materials
Clean Water: Water harvesting and long term storage
Food: In-home organic food production capability
Earthship structures are intended to be "off-the-grid-ready" homes, with minimal reliance on public utilities and fossil fuels. They are constructed to use available natural resources, especially energy from the sun and rain water. They are designed with thermal mass construction and natural cross-ventilation to regulate indoor temperature, and the designs are intentionally uncomplicated and mainly single-story, so that people with little building knowledge can construct them.

I grew up in New Mexico so I saw Earthships in Taos and learned about them. They were the normal thing actually. It’s really cool seeing people learn about them in other parts of the world. I’m hoping to have mine but,t in the next year or so. It’ll be a three or four bedroom build & I actually may see about building the first one with a full sized basement!

Fantastic, I am new to the Earthship concept. Living in Ireland I thought is would be more difficult to live off grid given our climate. Its such a logical way to live. Both humans and the Earth would be much happier if we all lived like this. 👏✌

The main issues with an earthsip in Ireland would probably be more likely planning related honestly, also good luck getting a mortgage for any non "standard" built home. If you had enough land where no one else could see the house and enough money to need no mortgage, you could do the build yourself, you might get away with it (emphasis on the might, while risking a large fine and potential imprisonment)

This is brilliant. It is quite similar to something I designed when was younger (high school),but never pursued my dream of building my own home like this. I am very excited to have found this channel and additional information/movement and hope to incorporate this knowledge into my future. I am very interested in all educational programs and activities within this lifestyle.

Thanks Jamie, the more I organise interviews and explore this world of self-building the more I'm surprise about innovation in design, materials and architecture. Now more than ever people are re-thinking housing as something closer to the everyday life needs. I'm currently editing but soon more videos about all this will come.

Am dying to build an earthship. Been in construction and engineering for most of my career. About 27 or so years now. Ive always been interested in architecture and design, and have wanted a non-traditional home. As time goes on society observes the inconsistencies in utility services and even food supply. We are in Oklahoma US and are looking to go out to Taos NM in just a couple weeks. Want to get a first hand view of the projects taking place. Hoping to get with some of the local counties to discuss building. As design has progressed, these home are no compromise at all. Extremely efficient and comfortable

Thanks Mr Earthshome! I think the same: it's important to document and share any alternative way of building and living, and with alternative I mean different from mainstream thinking. I'm filming more stuff similar to this one, stay tuned for more ;)

People are obsessed with living off-grid but it's so much better for the environment to export excess electricity to the grid when your batteries are full than just going to waste. And in return you can but electricity from the grid on an odd occasion you run out.

It was good to see what is going on in Great Britain with alternative housing.
I live in New Mexico, USA. The city of Toss (a Ski Resort area) has an earth ship community with about 70 plus homes. You can see how very varied are the homes. You can also see how the earth ship home developed. As well as improvements to the Earth ship homes.
In California, there is a community of about 15 homes. It is in a very hilly and rough terrain. Those homes an cost 5 times the norm and take twice as long to build. Often due to how very difficult it can be to deliver building supplies. Like tires, etc.
Please know that in the USA, an earth ship home can take about 2 years to build. And another year to dry out and settle.
The quickest I’ve heard was 9 months. This also had some good luck to build so quickly. The longest I heard of was 8 years. That person built only with cash ( not a loan. Which is another story- how to finance alternative housing). That home was built during summer. And once the owner took a vacation to have a break from the work of building.
The “modern” Earth ships do not have slanted greenhouse windows. The are the standard vertical windows.
    1. The original idea had tire walks between the rooms. Now you can put glass brick walls (these are NON Weight bearing walls). 2. This is an important consideration if you want a second floor or lofts on a third floor. The upper floors may be built into the land like stairs. The”stair” style is only one way of managing a second floor or lofts.
    3. Some earth ships have radiant heating in the floors. To keep feet warm.
    4. Some exterior walls do Not have sand filled & pounded tires. Some have 6 foot (1.5 meter) thick walls. Which are made with TIRE Blocks. These are huge blocks (Roughly, about 1.5 meters square) wide, deep and tall.
    5. The newer homes have an outdoor covered patio on the end. It functions as an outdoor living/dining room in summer weather.
6 . The covered patio also usually has a retaining wall to hold back the earth. These patios are quite comfortable.
    7. A parking space or carport may be seen on the other side of a patios retaining wall. Such a placement also keeps the cars exhaust fumes away from the home.
    8. I saw a home which had a bathroom made of gloss’s block. It was beautiful and bright. The glass block allowed for a circular bathroom in the midst of the home.
    9. The 2 floor homes, May have a tall atrium as the entry’s greenhouse. It may also have pet birds or peacocks there.
10 I even learned of some older Earth ship homes that had Rocket Stoves in them. Most were small. But one seemed large. As it ran under a seating area
I hope this gives you some food for your own ideas 😊. I am happy for you. I enjoy learning about Great Britain’s alternative housing (like hemp create homes or straw bale manors). May Jesus Christ and the holy family bless your endeavors.

I adore Earthships and i would love to build one in the UK just to see if it can work on a constant basis in the winter in the UK i also would love to apply some of the concepts with modern technology to all houses not just retro fitting them but going a lot farther insulation is everything in a conventional house to the point that you don't need to heat the house is the holy grail, I have so many ideas that would work i would love to test like not just insulating the heat into the room but reflecting it back into the room using ceramic in the paint creating a very warm environment for the cold UK winters . i with all involved in the Earthship good luck and hope to see one on every street corner very soon

she's correct, wind turbines have advanced since then in very dramatic ways.
there's a guy i was watching a few weeks ago who decided to patent an wind turbine that could pick up the wind from either direction of where the wind is coming from.
but to do this, is he had to pretty much abandon the type that's being seen in this video and use an spiral type of design which is much more efficient as it wastes no time finding the wind.
so if you live within a really windy place, this thing is constantly running without you having to do anything.

wind energy has lots of potential. Thanks for sharing this, a turbine that pick wind from both direction sound amazing. I hope access to wind turbines will get easier

it's true that inventor is mostly marketing these turbines to large businesses, but i believe he will make them affordable once he get's himself a factory that can create these things on mass, so regular folks can purchase these on the cheap.
they have a very interesting design besides what the surface stuff you see when you look at them.
if i recall correctly, these wind turbines are fitted on an wheel that uses micro sheet design while also using magnets with reverse magnets within it's design which amplifies the speed of these things when they are in action and also amplifies the power collection at the same time.
the first one he created has lasted over 15 years straight with no maintenance and probably won't really need any maintenance for a good 50 years.

Vertical axis (spiral) wind turbines have been around for a while. There was a company called quiet revolution that used to sell these in the UK, but they went bust in 2014 after their products under performed and lost their certification. As far as wind power goes, size does matter as does the height of installation unless all you want to do is trickle charge a small battery for a boat or something similar.

    • @user-tp5yb4hr4w
      @user-tp5yb4hr4w 2 роки тому

      @@nrml76
So the wind turbine company that I saw hasn't gone out of business, but this business has been going for the past 15 years along with the design of his turbine, I've seen a few other wind turbines that are vertical that are interesting designs but none of them compare to the uniqueness or efficiency of this one's design, and you're right to a certain degree, the smaller ones will have a trickle charge base in their design, however this one uses multiple with it's design generating power from the top and the bottom of the Center to the spiral design, the inventor also made it work along with solar power as well as having multiple turbines all performing right next to each other.
I can't remember what he called this, all I know is his design has been around for the last 15 years and he's never had any problems or any reason to do any maintenance on these things.
However this isn't his only invention, he also has a very popular particular type of planter that nobody else has been able to replicate and a water pumping filtration system that's meant to save on water as will reuse said water for the same plants, currently his inventions are being used in commercial use for the most part.
But that price can go lower depending on how popular the product is, and how many people want it on demand outside of commercial use.
However I can see his product being scaled in a bigger design and working just fine.
This design doesn't wobble like many of the other ones that I have seen which doesn't cause any stress on what is holding in place because of the design principles that were set in place ahead of time for the finished product.
