  • There are often quite a few different ways to approach a recorded drum performance; whether it’s focusing on the pocket with a minimalist take or maybe a bit more creative with some tasteful yet unique approach to a groove. One thing we don’t often consider is how the sound of the drums inspires the performance. This week, we decided to record some drums along with some Loop Loft samples performed by Charlie Hunter and take two vastly different approaches with two vastly different tunings thanks to Welch Tuning Systems.

    Charlie Hunter is a great musician. His stuff with Carter Mclean is some of the best music I've ever heard!

    What really surprised me was how much clearer the bass guitar was when the drums were tuned higher

      Yes! And that’s key- great drum sounds are almost always dependent on the context.

    It’s funny you mention erings. Tape, etc being in bounds when it comes to the final sound. I was always made to feel that having tape on your drum, using rings, etc was blasphemy! I then saw a sonic highway episode and they showed Taylor Hawkins’s setup for a particular track and there was tape on the top and bottom of the floor tom, moongel on the rack and laundry in the bass drum and the drums for that track sounded absolutely amazing. I do feel you should learn to tune your drums and to get an open and dampened tone in kind but I see so many of these huge artists tweaking things with the drums in the studio and I realized it’s nothing but the final recorded tone when it comes to tracking. Hey if it’s good enough for the foo fighters then I guess it’s ok for me. Rock in guys and thanks for your continuous,inspiring me informative content!

    Definitely an overload of sympathetic snare buzz! Hey, I’d love an easy tune system but for me, these guys are not my cup of tea! Excellent demonstration though cheers… Keith

    I"m not great at tuning drums. Do you recommend I buy these drums? Would that just be the end of my tuning problems?

    Could WTS drums be used for rock and metal?

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 роки тому +2

      Absolutely! There's nothing genre-specific about these drums.

    I'm a fan of wide open drums, but there's something about these that just doesn't sound right to my ear. Especially the snare. I could maybe find something to like about this tuning system for toms. But, the construction and purpose of the heads on the top and bottom (or front and back) of a snare and bass drum are so vastly different, I struggle to see how this is even useable without lots of modification. And, honestly, at that point what's the point of spending 6 grand on a kit?!

    Ok, looks like different heads for the up tuning. Sounds better,

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 роки тому

      Same exact heads. Just a change in tuning and removal of the E-rings. Not necessarily "better" but just different.

    • @erictorres4889

      Sounds Like A Drum I disagree I think no E rings sound better .

  • @mwdrum

    Thanks for the video, imo, to much dampening, no resonance, imo

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 роки тому +1

      All depends on the character. That low tuning works perfectly with the muffling and that particular performance. The high tuning is open, resonant, and lends itself nicely to some more notes and general experimentation. The key here is that different sounds can all work as different approaches to a track and can also lend themselves to different performance approaches as well.

      Removing rings, that’s why they looked and sound need different, I think that system has real possibilities. I watch the namm best of video, just a quick hands on demonstration of tuning, gave a few seconds of what you can do in a live or studio situation. Nice effort, I appreciate it......I went to their web site, not very fast, a bit clumsy, looks good but doesn’t work very well, maybe relay that to them.....best regards, Michael Welch, no relation, I don’t think.....
