- My guest for this episode is Lynn Nicholson.
Lynn is a seeker. As a young trumpet player, his search for a better solution to playing outdoors led to him discovering The MF Protocol. His superhuman upper register landed Lynn’s first professional gig with Bill Chase and then as a featured member of the Maynard Ferguson band. While Lynn’s life has taken some unpredictable twists and turns he has always followed his heart and remained true to his inquisitive nature.
Check out what Lynn has to say about stumbling onto the MF Protocol, the need for a methodical approach, having an enquiring mind, being surrounded by greatness, transitioning to life in LA and Vegas, learning to be comfortable in the uncertainty, motivations, making mouthpiece magic, myth-busting, what he learned from Maynard, and so much more!
So pour yourself a big glass, pull up a chair, and let the hang begin!

GREAT interview!! MANY concepts in the trumpet/brass world that have never matched up with reality. Why do we continue to make this so difficult. Thank you!
Lynn you have, and still are, making a positive difference in all of us. Keep healthy and enjoying life. Thanks for this productive, amazing and well done interview !
Thank you.....
Lynn Nicholson - legend. So many wise words.
As a teen preparing to play trumpet for a living, your wise words of staying true to yourself is keeping my head in the right space. Great video.
I love Lynn Nicholson! So much great info here. Keep going, Lynn! Thank you for including Lynn in this series.
Lynn is still a beast of a trumpet player...and I love hearing what he is sharing from Maynard about mouthpieces and practice.
Lynn's Resume speaks for itsself ! Privileged to know this Brother ! His personal mouthpiece fits me like a Glove !
1:18:50 You da man Lynn! And all the trumpet stuff is great too by the way ;-) 🎺🎶
Respect.
Epic interview!
Thank you Lynn and Maynard love you my heroes!!!
My day had been #MAAADE 💯💯💯💯⬆️⬆️™️🎺 this a true #legend my favorite interview yet, love the stories and just hearing him talk about these gigs so amazing 🙏🙏🙏
I've always played big mouthpieces,...which probably cost me a lot of gigs...I didn't have a commercial sound...recently I've been playing Lynn's Mac Park and Personal mouthpieces...wow what a difference...little chop maintenance with sound and range...so efficient...Thx Lynn!
Wow, this one is huge, Lynn is a legend!
Got his mouthpiece and reversible rim.
WOW! Great interview with Lynn! ...very interesting listening to his experiences as a musician and an engineer of his craft....and all the technical dialogue.
Great Interview - I have the utmost respect for Lynn.
Interview tip of the week.. just ask the leading questions and shut up. Thanks Lynn for you concise answers to these and uhh uuh uhh you you you or or or questions.
Lynn’s speaking about life unfolding with a sense of guidance from God (or the universe) reflects my own experiences. As a high school trumpet player, orthodontic work ruined my range. And that opened the way to soloing usually assigned to the third or fourth trumpet part. Developing improvisation and going back to the piano, I earned a Master’s in jazz and as am happy as I can be as an in home private piano teacher. I share and impart something of great value with people of all ages, and we love each other.
Also Lynn’s description of himself as an optimizer is to make the most of what life brings you. What a wonderful way to approach everyday life. You can’t help but admire and deeply like such a truly positive person.
Thank you for a very informative video. Loved the ambiance and talk.
One of my favorite interviews. Great job Jose.
Thanks!
I recall Jens Lindemann said that many players play a mouthpiece which is too big. Glad to hear Lynn confirm that as well. I don't get this obsession among trumpeters to play big mouthpieces when it is often not the most efficient approach for many players.
The first person I ever heard say that was Allen Vizzutti. It's stuck with me ever since.
@@TheTrumpetGurusHangPodcast He certainly knows a thing or two (or three...) about trumpet. 😀
Lynn already has a superpower, LOL! And I'm still trying to figure it out. But every time he speaks, something about the MF Protocol makes a little more sense. Even when he's not talking specifically about that! This interview has been long awaited! I've always wanted to just get the cat talking and let him go!
Wow wisdom that is worth listening to. I played trumpet in high school wanted to go on to be a pro but never did it. Did some musicals played in community band ,small jazz bands and never could play to my abilities. I'm a plumber now but when I play people are amazed that I only went to high school
Thank you!!! ❤️
Lynn is a legend.
Gotta say as an oboe player learning trumpet, that intro made me laugh out loud.
Hi José, thanks a lot for your excellent videos. Could you make one about the concept of "balanced embouchure" that has been developed by Jeff Smiley.
OH WOW...Lynn just did a demo on Facebook and here he is with you.. Jose....gotta like it !!!! again great videos on trumpet and also general life attitudes . Always educational and thoughtful on many levels..Thanks from Wisconsin
You're welcome.....
Maynard was like that. He could do it but couldn't explain it.
Unlike me, who can explain it but not do it!
If you want to play high and big, listen to Lynn. After 40 years of playing, and quite well in the upper register, he laid out 2 fundamental concepts that just made all the years of the over analyzing and mental minutia of playing as simple as 1+1=2. I won't drop any spoiler alerts here. Just watch his vids "Got High Notes" and try his XPiece RR.
I was 18 yrs old on national completion for high school musicians when I was able to see Lyn Nickelson in lake Tahoe at the dunes hotel playing in a pit band and I was amazed of his instant high range ability. Since then I discovered a way to play double C or triple C for 4 hours and the damage he talks about happen to me and I was sad for 4 years because I was a top rate trumpeter in high school. Afterwards I gained astonishing high range ability that scared and intimidated other fellow trumpeters
Allen Vizzutti- "Play the smallest equipment you can" paraphrasing

There are two kinds of trumpet players: Those who can play high and those who WISH they could.
The myth-busting section is GOLD! I get so sick of people believing that faster air equates to higher notes. There are some highly-respected trumpet players or manufacturers who continually push this myth and because of their big names, everyone believes them. Bobby Shew, James Morrison, Scott Englebright, Jason Harrelson are all guilty of pushing this myth (and there are plenty more). They should stick to playing or making trumpets, but should leave the analysis to people who seek proof through experimentation rather than making assumptions.
I'm going to try the MF Protocol
It's a game changer for sure. I'm glad i jumped on the bandwagon.
@@thedamndiz2343 Yes, it is a game changer.... Thanks Diz....
