Met Henry Rono in 97, in WSU, when he was inducted into Hall of Fame. I went with my agent Yaako Tuominen, a Finn. We had to pick him up from the airport the before. Henry Rono, who was my hero as a legend runner, was drunk and barely could walk !!! We drove him to the hotel and he passed out. When we woke him the next day for the big day of induction. I sat with him at the platform for his acceptance speech. Henry Rono had such a hangover that he was sweating profusely. He was embarrassed he asked me to speak on his behalf. Rono stood up and barely spoke. And just sat down. I hugged him and he missed to see the tears in my eyes. I was sad for him!!! Pombe ? The killer of our Kenyans and Kenyan runners. Many many stories. Asante
Depression and loneliness is what leads to alcoholism especially in a foreign land. He ought to have been taken to a rehab before his alcoholism escalated.
This story reasonates with that of my aunt ..her name is Everline Kemunto Kimwei. She was a Kenyan long-distance runner. Her greatest achievement was a team gold medal at the 2007 IAAF World Road Running Championships, where she was sixth. She was a joint-holder of the African record for the ekiden marathon relay, courtesy of her winning run for Kenya at the 2006 Chiba Ekiden. She did so many other races. But right now she is in the Village..things ain't going so well for her. She was our hero but the 'Drink' messed her marathon life. I wish something could have been done to help her..we were too young to know what her issue was back then. I would really wish to see her back on her feet ..she is super talented. Tulienda ushago Mimi humwona akipiga tizi..and I always feel happy... I am proud to say I met Catherine Ndereba for the first time courtesy of her. ❤❤ Much love auntie
Mkurugenzi au upige hizi stori za Athletics as Separate Episodes maybe once in a Month mkuru. ... athletics have made us proud as a country from way before memorial and there is always a story for each and one of them. Adios mchachoz on to that consideration . #Peace,Love and Unity
Am glad the ending wasn't that bad. Atleast he managed to salvage himself from the addiction and got to do something kidogo for himself. he had a great support system but unfortunately alcohol addiction took a toll on him.. pombe ni mbaya. Rest perfectly legend. Sad
Watching from Toronto,Canada, every time I tell someone I'm from Kenya , the first reaction is mostly like 'can you run?, Kenya has some of the best athletes!'

Depression and mental health na kutoa stress kwa drugs and alcoholism haimalizi mambo.. I'm sure if he could have allowed himself to compete in even one Olympics motivation ingekam... Good job Mkuru👊🏿 59:41
His family were great family friends. We lived together at South C. His son Calvin Rono was my classmate in Primary school. (Kongoni Pry School) We parted ways after class 8 in 1998. Their mummy was such a sweet lady. Maureen, though not 100% but she was a kind soul... I miss that family ....
Watu wa mtrh we are here , doctor Edith was our lecturer for medical psychology It's unfortunate we lost her as moi university college of health sciences and mtrh and ampath at large ,, We will continue what she started ❤
Such a sad story that Henry Rono did not have a manager and a support system even back home to look out for him and even though he put his life together and cme back home the goverment STILL LET HIM DOWN SHAME!!!!

Hitting Rock bottom, I thank you Mkuruu for showing that it's possible to get out of the tentacles of drug abuse. May God continue to bless you with the grace to narrate these stories. I am clocking 6 months without sipping the devil's drink and kumbe kuwa sober ni tamu hivi guys😅. Mniombee mimi ni actor mnoma but drugs zilikua zimenidrag back for long (never had addiction problems but i felt my creativity would always be dented). Hoping this is my year for breakthrough in the industry.
Thank you so much Mkurugenzi, not only for sharing these stories but also for the healthy advice on our mental health and the ones of our great athletes in our nations. Just to share with someone here, I recommend a book called "The i Factor" by Van Moody it may help someone dealing with what the great Henry Rono went through and even with other tragedies in life. Thank you Mkurugenzi🥂
I know Maureen Rono- the daughter. I have known her since 2013 to 2023. She stayed in South C Mugoya. She was hit by a car before I knew her and suffered brain damage so she isn't 100% but can hold conversations well. Word was her dad was a famous runner but I never knew it was Henry Rono. May he rest in peace
What, hope you get this comment...Maureen and Calvin Rono were my neighbours back in South C. Infact Calvin was my Classmate in Kongoni Pry school. We parted ways after class 8... Their mum was a great family friend and a friend to my mummy.

Please tell us how his wife and kids faired on through his journey.... This is one man's journey. What of those who he scarred in his journey to greatness?
This is an incredible story of one of our heroes. It's sad to hear that the majority of them suffer from mental health. I think the first order of business is to have them undergo mental wellness and be assigned to a therapist. Kumbuka these are guys who are taught from childhood that being tough and showing no emotions is being a 'man'. @Mkuru, don't you think people like Eliud Kipchoge na Wilfred Bungei should be at the forefront of educating the upcoming athletes on mental stability and the effects of drinking? Or even having the know-how to separate situations. At the training school (if there is any) in Iten, there should be a compulsory class on financial literacy and on investment & business management. It's really sad to hear and see our heroes languishing in poverty after all the glorious years. Most retire not because they've come of retirement age but because of alcoholism. This is so sad. Something must be done about this!
This is such an inspirational story of resilience! I am also passionate about Sports Psychology and look forward to making a contribution in the discipline. Thank you for sharing.
