Great pod as always guys. Hope we will get to play some of you this weekend at Four makes a Fellowship. Looking forward to the new version of the game what rules additions would you most like to see?
Totally agree on Glorfindel I hate the fact this mighty hero a first age Noldor is weaker then like Guritz… With Legolas I think he should be 3 attacks purely because of those 2 daggers most of the time if models in MESBG have 2 weapons they usually get the extra attack heroes usually get the extra so him and Erestor should get that extra attack
I also hate how this high king Gil-Galad is so easy to shut down with magic one of the only elves that didn’t trust Anatar in the second age this mega elf can be so easily shut down is crazy. The whole 1 fate thing in the game is a problem for a lot of reasons we see that like Boromir gets a 3 fate profile highlighting him in a different time before the fellowship but with this elf that’s thousands of years old 1 fate because he eventually does die 🙄😂
*** LONG POST SO FEEL FREE TO BE SELECTIVE *** Reflecting on one of the lists from this episode, reminded me of a similar one I took to TOS 2022 which ended up being a lot of fun. The "what if" narrative was: "The Redemption of Boromir After he failed to 'persuade' Frodo to take the ring to Minas Tirith and realising he had been so seduced, Boromir fled in shame unaware that as a result of his actions, the Fellowship had broken apart; Frodo and Sam to continue the journey to Mount Doom; Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli to rescue Merry and Pippin who had been abducted by Uruk-hai scouts. Long did Boromir take to travel home; long was he wracked with despair at his own weakness. After many days and nights, he at last caught sight of the towers of Minas Tirith but his sense of doom and dread began to rise; all was not well. As he approached the lowest gate, the mighty doors opened and out came Faramir, in full armour riding at the head of a column of knights. Calling an immediate halt, Faramir dismounted and embraced his older brother with great joy yet tinged with sorrow. It didn't take Boromir long to learn about the loss of Osgiliath and what Faramir's intentions were. Staying his younger brother's progress for but a short while, Boromir called for his armour, horse and the Banner of Minas Tirith; seeing a chance for redemption, he would join Faramir in this forlorn attempt to retake the "Citadel of the Stars". As the column of knights rode forth, watching despondently from the battlements, Gandalf the White realised who had joined Faramir and that to lose both sons - especially his beloved Boromir - would take Denethor over the edge. By chance, Pippin appeared at the same time as Shadowfax; without hesitation, the White Wizard pulled the young hobbit up and urged his great steed to make haste; he must save Faramir at the very least... " The army list was: Boromir, Captain of the White Tower & Bnnr of MT & Hrs & Shld 6 Citadel Guards & Hrs 8 Knights of Minas Tirith & Shld Faramir, Captain of Gondor & Hrs & HvyArm & Shld 1 Knight of Minas Tirith & Bnnr & Shld 12 Knights of Minas Tirith & Shld Gandalf the White & Shadowfax Peregrin Took, Guard of the Citadel & Elven Cloak
As an Elven player, I found the discussion super interesting and must now also share my wish/opinion :D I think your GBHL statistics alone speak for themselves that certain factions (including Elves) need a little rework to make the game even more diverse in a competitive context. As one commenter already said, a uniqueness of the elven warrior profiles would be very interesting. High Elves K6, but ranged 4+, Thranduil's Halls specialized in bow (hitting at 3+ and an ability/rule that further strengthens bow combat) and Lorien is the solid Elven profile as now. Overall Elves are solid but have too many weaknesses. Mainly too small army sizes for the killing power they have. I think the possebility to build slightly larger Elven armies would change a lot. About the Rivendell heroes. I think the only thing missing here is the uniqueness of the heroes. All 3 hero profiles are expensive, somehow similar and not very efficient. One idea: - Elrond - solid fighter like now, but is a little buff bubble with magic for the elves - Gilly - He is the MIGHTY hero of the High Elves (and currently weaker than Elendil). That's where his focus should be -> e.g. 6H like Boromir and something that gives killng power like Free Heroic Strength. Then a magic resistance would not be absolutely necessary - Glorfindel - The terror of the Nazgul and the noblest fighter of the Elves. I think if he get the Hadfang ability + masterful sword, than he would fulfill his role. Alternatively, he could stay where he is now, but a lot cheaper to solve the Elves' Numbers problem.
I do like the idea of each elven faction being different imo Noldor High elves should be better armoured and martially equipped then there lesser Sindar cousins, those other factions could be more shooty then Killy like high elves. Just crazy to me that a battle line of Noldor isn’t that scary from an opponents pov, it really should be!
Started building a Rivendell army this year, so very interesting to see some thoughts on most of their heroes!! Played a few casual games but hope they get a few buffs as sounds like they need a little more 'umph'. Enjoy the episode, Cheeeers! Also would like to see Rivendell allied with rangers, if Aragorn is leading them. Which I don't think can be a green alliance? As the link is mentioned in the books and films..
I didn't tack this onto my comment last week because it was already so long. But this one's for Dave. Black Numenorians ARE my favorite warriors in the game. They have the same aesthetic as The Mouth of Sauron and that's my favorite looking baddy from the films. They are likely going to legends though. **sad trombone noise**
I was a bit disappointed seeing the Strider Cup top 3, from the sound of the event I thought we’d see some actual fluffy / not try-hard lists, but 3rd and 2nd didn’t seem to have any flavour at all
I was one of the Rohan players. I've been 4 out the last 5 years and can say the lists have definitely ramped up over that time. However, there were some very fun lists last weekend. One had 3 GBOGs and 2 catapults. We played a fun Thorins Company and Eagles lists and saw a full 1000pts Erebor reclaimed lists. We did also play an Angmar list with 2 Wraiths, a shade and Gully which was cool to see 1000pts of pure Angmar, whilst being very strong. I think all the GBHL events, even the fluff focused 80pts are becoming more and more competitive. Josh and I wanted a 1000pts army that looked cool, was different to the last few times we have attended (corsairs/SH) but could hold its own at most of the singles scenarios. Would thoroughly recommend attending Strider though as, the lower tables were great fun for those aiming for Strider points and the top table games were competitive but fun and relaxed. Kieran runs an excellent event.
Gonna have to disagree on Piercing being a good part of the game. It is only a reward if you benefit from the bonus strength, which is mostly arbitrary. In a lot of cases the d3 wont risk boosting your enemies Strike. And on things like goblins, cheap units you dont value the life of, having them punching above their weight isnt even that much of a risk reward, its a 4 point model killing 10 point models, 50 point models, 120 point models... I think you will also agree with me that it is one of the things that directly makes Monsters terrible, for those reasons above. Because your Defence is "capped" at 2 under your attackers Strength value (3+ to wound), there is actually ZERO risk reward when a generic warrior is looking at an ent with S8 D8. The ent literally gets nothing from that warrior Piercing Striking, but the warrior goes from needing 6/4 to only 6s to wound. That is ridiculous value on models that are already just flat out more efficient across the board. Frankly, as a person who wants monsters to not get blitzed by just 6 warriors with spears - 6 models that in total cost half its points, that it doesnt really have a hope to kill personally unless successful several turns in a row, due to one bad combat and not getting a 6 - being wounded on 6s even having over double their enemies base stats... fuck that mechanic.
Gothmog idea: Move it maggots! Gothmog may call a heroic march at the start of each movement phase without expending might. Gandalf the white idea: Lord of The Istar: Spells successfully cast by Gandalf automatically count as if their casting roll was a 6 for resist tests. Love the new edition stuff!

Elrond will recieve Malbeth's foresight rule. Unfortunately he will get it exactly as it is currently written, meaning it only protects Arnor models.

Which childhood friend did Stephen kick out the team now for Kyle to join?
Gothmog idea:
Move it maggots!
Gothmog may call a heroic march at the start of each movement phase without expending might.
Gandalf the white idea:
Lord of The Istar:
Spells successfully cast by Gandalf automatically count as if their casting roll was a 6 for resist tests.
Love the new edition stuff!
Strider Cup is not the longest running event Stephen - it's only been going since 2018. #factchecked
🤣 so much shade thrown in those comments and this video. One day I’ll make it to a gbhl event! Chitter chitter gents
