This was such a perfect video. I quit my job in 2021 to pursue my art business. I don't regret it...but it was very difficult and, even at times, lonely. I am proud of the progress, but I could tell pretty quickly that it wasn't sustainable. I think I made good groundwork, but I was scared to admit that I hadn't gone all in. So when you said that, it was a huge relief to know I'm not alone. I'm now working 2 part time jobs while still occasionally working on my shop, but it took a major backseat. Thank you so much for always being honest about your path as a business owner and just know that so many of us appreciate you...not just the art, but who you are as a person. I'm heading to work now, but this video makes me feel like I'm glowing! ♡

This is exactly where I am at. I started my Etsy/creative business in 2017. I was excited, but scared to be full time so I didn't give it my all, so my business never took off. I got pregnant with my third child in 2020 and here we are almost 2 years later and my shop is dead, I have no new items and my creative drive was lost. I now face the decision of paying for summer care for three kids to get a "regular" job or diving into a reopening of my business and really challenging myself. Thank you for this video.

it's never a linear path, personally, I've battled like crazy to be a self-employed artist, reading all the business and marketing books whilst learning to improve over the years has paid off. it is a big u curve but I'm glad I went through it. certainly mentally drains you at times. Thanks for sharing your journey. I've been following you since you started and had no idea you had tried before

Experience is so valuable - learning what works and what doesn’t. I’ve made my fair share of mistakes (some really expensive ones too!) but in the end, I take them and using them as stepping stones. I really liked hearing your story, thank you for sharing!

Omg! This is definitely me now, in your 2017 (apart from I’m a lot older than you, yes I’m an old dear lol), I’m doing commissions and asking my friends on family on Facebook, but I’m flipping skint! I really needed this. I need to get motivated, get out there and know my brand. Thanks so much, Emily, this might just be the kick up the bum I really need 😘

I’m an oldie too having to start from scratch thanks to the last 2 years. Lost all my clients as I was an advertising designer. Going in a different direction now after getting out of my rut. Hard when you’re skint, got a family, single mum blah blah blah. We can do this. Gotta hold onto a positive mindset (easier said than done but doable!) ❤️

I am exactly the same Emily! I studied 3d Computer Animation in Cardiff, I was going down the CG Artist route and everybody was moving to London. As much as I'd love to, I felt like it would be really stressful to share a home with several others and everything being so expensive put me off :(

This is so inspiring Emily. I’ve followed your journey for a long time and it wouldn’t have even occurred to me that your first try at business was a “failure” (I would argue that it wasn’t, you learned so so much but I know what you mean).
This video has also given me a bit of hope. I’ve just started a new full time job after freelancing & running an online shop for 5 years (😵) as I finally admitted that my business wasn’t paying the bills. I don’t regret it one bit, but part of me feels like I’m giving up on my dream. I know that I can come back to it at any time and be “all in” next time ☺️

This is a great video. I am actually at the stage right now of going back to work for a short time then when I am finished in a few months, I am giving my business my full attention. Right now, as soon as I finish the 9-5, I eat, then get back to work but on my own work as a Pet Portrait Artist. I am determined to make it work as I know it is what I want to be doing with my life. I've always been interested in making vlogs too, I find them so interesting to watch, so maybe I shall join in the future! X

I so needed to hear this today. I'm on disability and just dabbling in art and only selling one or two paintings a year. I just decided to go back to school and take business accounting so I can work and start my art business again in the future, but with the knowledge of business under my belt 😉. Great video 💖

Emily, this was a great video. This is parallel to my experience. I started my business originally in 2014 under a different name and I had to return to work because it failed. So in 2021, I decided to try again. This video is so timely. I’m determined to make it work this go around, for all the reason that you’ve stated above. I started a UA-cam channel but I’m too nervous to post. You’re right! Time to go all in. Best of luck to you

Thank you Emily for thi video, it has helped me a lot in regards the ups and downs of my business. I already have planned a studio vlog, but I don't have the courage to show myself in the camera (I'm a very shy person), and even through I wanted to challenge myself with trying, I find it harder and harder every passing day (I'm not ok with my mental health at the moment, and I don't think I will recover soon enough, I had a very hard year.) At least I know my intuitions was right and how to move forward when I will be in a good space with myself! Thank you so much again! ❤️

Thank you so much, Emily, for sharing this! I've been writing and publishing books for a while now and still having financial difficulties. I can also see the growth and what can be improved. I look at working for ourselves as if we were planting a food forest/perennial garden. It takes some years to establish, some benefits are not visible instantly. It's nice to hear other people's stories.🤗

Me too Marie. I need to make a variety of videos. Maybe work out how to share what I am creating whilst creating it e.g. When I create a t-shirt, mug, leggings, an affirmation T-Shirt with the chosen Affirmation from the Lunar Pumpkin Community, my eco products too. I could show them what the winning one is. I could Thank the my amazing community for voting; I'd probably have to make a video presentation through Canva or screen record on zoom, condense it in an app, or add images afterwards to a UA-cam video of each part, or make a reel and try to work out how to add that to a video. I could do a q&a video on my UA-cam maybe. There's definitely food for thought here. I am so grateful to my Lunar Pumpkin Facebook community and my smaller, but equally valuable Instagram community. I always learn something from you, Emily. I also learn a lot from Sam too (Squeak and Shout). Thank you for the pep talk, your honesty and review of what's worked and what tweaks you have made. Your story is so heartfelt, beautiful, real and down to earth, as are you. I would still love to interview you on my channel in June. That would be incredible. 💖🙏

    Hi Emily -
You are such an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your story. I am loving your videos and this one was super helpful.
Is there a BRANDING exercise you did the second time around? Or did you just ask yourself the three questions you mentioned:
    1. WHY do I make my art?
    2. WHO do I make it for?
    3. HOW do I make it?
    Thanks again!

Thank you Emily for this video, you showed us the reality of small business and self-employment. I have a small business that has been running since 2020, while it's been growing but it hasn't been able to replace what I earn from my office job. I've been worried these last past months because my job contract will end next year, and because the economy in my country isn't doing well due to the pandemic, finding a new job is HARD.
So my point is, for people who want to quit their day job and do full time self-employment, please do your research first, build your brand, community, and followers, and make sure you have enough savings to last at least a year. Starting a small business is difficult in any environment, but it's even more challenging in a tough economy like these days.

Really loved this video! And can certainly relate to many of the points especially the "I dont need the job, well I do...financially"😂 it's great to see how you started and the events that have got you to where you are today😊 I recently got a part time job and it's made my commission work more fun because its taken off that financial burden, and now I can enjoy it more! 🥰 and like you said once that stress was gone, things just fit into place, I now have more orders than I ever have had on my waiting list! Thank you for being so honest and inspiring Emily🧡

It’s allowed lol it just meant the company didn’t have to pay all the taxes/insurance for an employee. Saves them around £6-10k per year. Less paperwork for them too as you do all your own taxes etc… the only dodgy thing there is if they dictated the cost for work. In this scenario you choose what they pay but some firms manipulate their self employed contacts.
