  • Let's make some wood bookmarks! So it is time for another challenge! This time ‪@dainermade‬ has set the #RubbishWood21 playlist up, make sure you click the hashtag to see all the entries. I was sent some scrap veneers of walnut and jarrah from Western Australia by Julian at Shaping Sawdust ( / @shapingsawdust ) and had this bookmark idea for a while. Now was the perfect time to combine them with some of my own thin offcuts to try out a few new things.
    I was making it up as I went along and ended up incorporating both resin and for the first time ever, leather into the project. For me, the fun was in making the two jigs I needed to work with such thin and tiny bits of wood. My cutting jig and the DIY Drum Sander which will have its own video soon.

    Great video James! I thought those jigs were genius! Well designed and efficient in use!
    I have used veneer as thin as postcard to make into bookmarks but it has to be said that any thicker than that and the wood has to be curved front and back on the long edges otherwise there will be two parallel lines on the page, especially if the book is jammed tight in the bookshelf or if the book is in a pile of heavy books. I have technical books which have cost maybe £50 and I would be shocked if I had impression damage or the wax impacted in hot weather. The leather beveller and the hard burnishing would seem to solve those problems. Great idea for the project challenge James - now what to create with rubbish sawdust! :)

    • @FixitFingers
      @FixitFingers  3 роки тому +1

      Some interesting thoughts there my friend. I steered away from an oil finish for just that reason, to protect the pages, fortunately for rate at which my mother and sister read they shouldn't stay still for long but I shall warn them of the perils of tardy page turning rates particularly in warm weather! They are a little thick, 2.5 mm they ended up in the middle, but a little thinner around the edges so perhaps by accident I have stumbled on the parabolic curve required due to the eccentricity of my bodgy sander 😅
