I love this thank you Jeff! It would be lovely if you did more of these, I saw a major improvement in my own drawing just following along and listening to your advice
Just started drawing after couple years of break and use to draw cartoonish , comics but after seeing some of ur portraits . i have clearly know what I wanna draw . thank you so much for your sketches its very helpful .
Excellent video. Your style of communication is easy to follow. And not put me to sleep. I need to get back to timed drawings and worry less about exactly reproducing a reference
Wow, there is such a nostalgia to your voice and the way you explain things, reminds me of one of those old documentary videos from high school in the 80s :-) and I mean that with the upmost respect it is awesome! There’s not a lot of tutorials here on UA-cam that I find are really high-quality and efficient, And believe me I click on a lot of them and they are flooded on UA-cam. Top-notch stuff! Thanks!🙏😉
Cool man. I love using willow charcoal too. I really need to start practicing this more. Do you physically gauge the proportions too, it looks like you just do it all by eye? I know I tend to find smaller portraits okay, but when I try to draw at a larger scale I need to be more careful and double check as my mind can play tricks on me.
This one was more just by eye, I'm usually somewhat more methodical though. My eyes play tricks too, remember to stand up and step back now and then. It helps alot, good luck!
Bigger makes your mistakes more obvious. I was very decent at drawing anything on small scale. Then i tried bigger scale and realized how bad i actually am
I like to draw faces about the size of an open hand. I have a million smaller sketchbook faces though. Bigger drawings encourage more detail, which may or may not be your thing. Good luck!
The same principles apply, but soft charcoal is much more editable than graphite, so graphite might require a more careful approach to the same ideas if that makes sense.
Hello I did a portrait And I used my finger to blur in the shadows My friends said that that was wrong and makes the drawing looks cheap and flat...my feelings where hurt. You are a real artist and used the finger too....😢 I'd rather user my fingers than draw lines which don't blend in and aren't smooth...what do you think?
Hi! The only thing that's important is the result. There will ALWAYS be people telling you that you're doing it wrong. I get it all the time. If they aren't charcoal artists, you should probably ignore them. If you produce better work with your fingers then use your fingers! The only issue with using your fingers is that you can get oils from your skin on the drawing, but I wash my hands really well before I draw and rarely have an issue with that. Good luck!
Focus on big shapes and big volumes. For instance; Get the entire eye socket in the right place before dividing that shape up into the eye, the brow, the lid, the lashes, the iris, etc. Stay loose and concentrate on form and structure. I hope that helps.
Jeff the most important and probably least noticed was your continuously using the word “ shape”. Viewers’ should go back a see you not drawing eyes, nose, mouth etc but the ( shadow) “ shapes. This is a big problem for many. They want to draw “ things”. If anyone take anything away from this “ great” demo is, draw THE SHAPES.👍
“Not to draw faster, but draw smarter!!” Powerful statement that resonates! Thanks
My pleasure, thanks for watching!
Your explanations and reasonings are so clear and easy to understand. Thank you so much.
Thank you! Glad that you enjoyed it.

Thanks so much for commenting! I love to hear that people find these vids useful :)
Really enjoy the commentary and the fluidity. You make it look effortless but that understates the complexities of your craft.
Thanks Mark. Much appreciated.

Good art work ✌️✌️
Am I crazy or do you sound just like Walter White?
I've heard that several times, haha. I've never thought so before, but we never know what we sound like.
Fk now I can't unhear it 😂

For learning, do you prefer to draw bigger or smaller?

Hi! what is the name of the pencil you use in the beggining?
It's Coates willow charcoal, comes in different lengths. I think he is using medium, look it up! 🎉
Is it the same with graphite pencils?
The same principles apply, but soft charcoal is much more editable than graphite, so graphite might require a more careful approach to the same ideas if that makes sense.
your so good im going to eat your art
Hello
I did a portrait
And I used my finger to blur in the shadows
My friends said that that was wrong and makes the drawing looks cheap and flat...my feelings where hurt. You are a real artist and used the finger too....😢 I'd rather user my fingers than draw lines which don't blend in and aren't smooth...what do you think?

How can we avoid getting attached to details and forgetting that we don't want a photograph but rather represent what we observe?
Focus on big shapes and big volumes. For instance; Get the entire eye socket in the right place before dividing that shape up into the eye, the brow, the lid, the lashes, the iris, etc. Stay loose and concentrate on form and structure. I hope that helps.
Why is that, your willow charcoal is darker than mine?🤔😅
It may be the brand. I find natural charcoal varies quite a bit from brand to brand. I'm using 'Coates'
@@JeffHainesArt thanks for the info sir, next time im gonna buy trusted brands

I agree, shapes and edges. Thank for commenting!
Great job,but have you ever tried the technique drawing the image upside down? It's from the book Drawing on the right side of the brain.
I've done that one quite a bit. Great exercise.
