Compass Box Orchard House review

- I have, more than once, been asked by someone in the whiskey shop where I am employed..."is there such thing as a double malt?" I suppose it's a reasonable enough question if you don't know much about whisky. The term "Single Malt" is fairly well known and also seems to bring some gravitas. As far as I can tell...those who, don't really know whisky, ask for single malts because movies and books have suggested that the single malt is best.
You and I of course, know that this isn't always the truth.
Not only are there some great blended scotches (a blend of malt and grain whisky) out there but, there are some fabulous blended malts. In fact, from where this novice sees it...blending malts is a gret way to tweek flavours to taste. I'm surprised there aren't more Indy bottlers out there doing it.
Anyway...this short series is just a snap shot of some blended malts on the open market.
Let's kick off with Compass Box.
Enjoy.

Besides all three main components, if you liked this, also Glencadam and AnCnoc. Maybe even a touch of some young mostly ex-bourbon Arran. Dare I even say a Glen Grant 15. 😺
Bought this about a year ago and really enjoyed it, as you said crisp and fresh and a nice outdoor summer drink. Being able to look at the breakdown of the mix makes it really interesting. Another great review.
I don’t understand why this channel is not MASSIVELY more popular / viewed by the whisky fraternity .
IMO ..This is one of the very best channels out there , knowledgeable and brilliantly presented
Cheers Jim 👍🥃
Have been looking for this to get it!
$45 USD here in the east coast. I'd rather spend $7 more and get Craigellachie 13.
Very nice, here in the Midwest $45 for orchard house and $62+ for Craigellachie 13.
I think is a great summer whisky. Thanks for your thoughts, cheers!
Cheers Jon.
Thanks for reviewing, Jim.
Interesting as always. Never really explored blended whisky myself, so no comments from my side.
Slàinte mhath
Slàinte Frank.
I honestly think, you'd enjoy this one, Frank. Enough to buy a bottle? Maybe not, but I do think, you'd like it, and it's really good value for money imo.
Disclaimer: I've been wrong before. Quite a few times actually 🤡
I'm on bottle number three. They had me at Linkwood, Clynelish, and Benrinnes. Bonus in Alberta, it's inexpensive.
😄😄 yeah, 3 whiskies you can't really go wrong with eh Peter!? Put em all together and more magic comes out 😉
Cheers buddy.
Jim, Glad you like this one because I think it's a gem and anyone would be hard pressed to find a higher-quality malt for ~$50.
As for it being a NAS and a Blended Malt, as if that's a handicap, there are plenty of super-highly praised NAS malts, like Victoriana, Uigeadail, and everything from Kilchoman; and on their website, Compass Box provides more disclosure that any whiskymaker in the industry.
Also, someone needs to explain to be why in the world it being a Blended Malt is in ANYWAY a bad thing?
So I really WOULDN'T understand why anyone wouldn't want to spend money on such a beautifully made, well-priced malt ✌️
100% agree with you.
First of your videos I saw. Good job 👍
This was my blended malt find for last year Jim and I was so very pleased with the overall quality of this CB offering. There was a delightful balance of the malts and a mouthfeel that delivered all the way to the finish. Definitely one I would buy again.
Jim, Spot on - love Orchard House - now on my third bottle...... Bloody Gorgeous Summer fruit bomb
Solid reference for sure this, that I already reviewed. Also I'll suggest not to forget its floral component as well, and for that too, and the delicacy of both whiskies, I think that indeed the call for Linkwood is pretty relevant, so well done, Jim ! PS: For those who wonder (as it seems that many viewers & some reviewers still don't know this trick, but John once told me about it), while this is a no age statement, because of SWA rules, the company's website offers a fair & "discrete" possibility for people to learn about the age of the whiskies composing their whiskies, through the fact sheet download of each whisky, you just have to count the circles for each component & you get the picture ! (I'm sure you knew that, Jim, but I'm thinking of your viewers also when commenting videos). Cheers !
Ralfy explained that pretty well in one of his video not far ago but thanks anyway for reminder. Nice blend indeed. 😁🥂🙋🏻♂️
This one took our market by storm last summer and you're so right it is a summer dram but fares so well in autumn/spring as well. I'm not a massive fan of blended malts but this one is a very very well made one indeed. Cheers!
Gifted this bottle to my girlfriend because she liked the label so much😂 Bought a 2nd right away after we opened it because this will be my go to spring and summer whisky. Really wonderfull stuff!
I consider the flora & fauna Linkwood the datum, although it varies over time its what I use to make sense of the various indy Linkwoods' out there. A good starting point!
I had a bottle of this and I enjoyed it so much that it went quickly and I didn't get to review it! Cheers auld boy.
Been through a couple of bottles of this. Lovely stuff and for now a value price. Cheers Jim
Indeed Tim. Cheers my friend.
