Salem’s Lot creeped the hell out of me as a kid. Probably the scariest made - forTV movie ever? James Mason was a tremendous actor.

    HORROR/PSYCHOLOGICAL:
    - The Shining (1980) is an absolute classic, despite the fact that King disowned it.
    - Misery (1990) terrified me and I thought Kathy Bates’ acting was superb.
    - It (1990/2017) are great
    - Secret Window (2004) was a good film yet very underrated
    NON-HORROR:
    - The Shawshank Redemption (1994) was a great film saw it for the first time back in February on TV.

I like many films that were adapted from Stephen King works, but my top favorites are generally the ones that aren't exactly horror; I come back to these the most:
    1. The Shawshank Redemption (Probably my favorite film of all, or just about close to it.)
    2. The Shining
    3. Stand by Me (Might be some nostalgic reasons for this ranking.)
    4. Delores Claiborne
    5. The Green Mile
    I also like Misery.
I watched stuff like Children of the Corn, The Lawnmower Man, It, Pet Sematary, and such back then, but not so much these days.

Agree about Delores Claiborne. An excellent story with fantastic acting/performances; always one of my top favorites, but it seems to get overlooked by many. Excellent cinematography with so much mood and atmosphere; notice the grey and overcast shots (which represent the present), contrasted with the brighter colors and hues (representative of the past.) So fascinating.

Been reading King since '76, he's definitely amongst my favorite authors.
He rarely gets translated onto film correctly, imho....but to each his own
    My top 5 (...😉 today, at least 😊 )
    5- The Dead Zone
    4- Doctor Sleep
    3- Misery
    2- Creepshow
    1- Kubricks The Shining

Revival is a great recent King book…very good cosmic horror material.
My favorite film adaptations: Misery, Stand By Me, Shawshank, The Green Mile, Carrie, The Dead Zone, The Shining, and “camp” factor notwithstanding, Salem’s Lot. Dolores Claiborne is pretty good, as is the recent adaptation of Gerald’s Game with Carla Gugino.

Had the opportunity to actually meet Stephen King at a Gary Hart, remember him?, rally in New Hampshire in 1984. He was announced as a speaker, so I took my paperback copy of Firestarter, and a good pen, and went to the rally. And there he was! So I edged over to where he was standing and introduced myself and asked him to autograph my book. And he did! I was actually shaking as I walked away. It is still one of my most prized possessions that I show to selected guests.

When it comes to Stephen King adaptations, I kinda lean towards the miniseries more. Here are a few of my personal favorites:
    The Stand(1994)
    The Shining (both 1980 & 1997)
    Rose Red(2002)
    Carrie(1976)
    Christine (1983)
    Salem's Lot(1979)
    Storm Of The Century (1999)
    IT(both 1990 & 2017)
Btw: Pete Pardo, I really enjoy your content. Even if we disagree on some points, I really appreciate your insights as well as the rest of the Hudson Valley crew.

he's got sooooo many... hard to pick just 5... my favorites in order... and I am reviewing the movie, not the book... #1 The Shawshank Redemption (so much better than the book, probably the best book adaptation I have ever seen - easily in my top 5 favorite films of all time - acting is perfect, casting was perfect, cinematography was perfect, directing was perfect easily Stephen King and Frank Darabont and Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman's greatest work in their entire career and all 4 of them are on the Mt. Rushmore of their fields), #2 Stand By Me (again, amazing direction by Rob Reiner - great acting by all the kids: Cusack, Feldman, Phoenix, Sutherland, Wheaton, O'Connell, Siemaszko, etc. - great use of music, great narration by Richard Dreyfuss), #3 11.22.63 (with James Franco - my favorite Stephen King miniseries - amazing creative story and historical fiction), #4 The Dead Zone (1983 movie with Christopher Walken - Walken and Martin Sheen were both amazing), #5 The Running Man (great adaptation and Richard Dawson was amazing in it. Fun action movie - my only gripe was the directing by Paul Michael Glaser was a little too campy. this movie would have been 100 times better if Paul Verhoeven directed and put the spin on it he had in Robocop, Starship Troopers (and to a lesser extent Total Recall) and made it a dystopian dark comedy or if it had come out a few years later in Arnold Schwarzenegger's career and they had the big budget of a Terminator 2 or a True Lies to make it have better effect or if John Carpenter (Escape From New York, They Live) had directed it instead - it was kind of stuck in the middle of a big budget and small budget and PG-13 and an R - would have been better with a hard R). honorarble mention: The Green Mile (I hate to be one of those "the book was better" people but it was - I wish they had made it a 4 hour movie or even better, a six hour long episode HBO / Showtime / Netflix mini series [the original book was in 6 mini books] and included the character Brad Dolan - the malicious nursing home employee who harasses Paul Edgecombe and is very similar to Percy - I watch more than I read and maybe I feel this way because this was a rare case where I read the books first as they came out otherwise it would be higher on the list - again great work by Frank Darabont and great casting and acting - especially Michael Clarke Duncan - I have seen this movie 10 times and I cry every single time I watch this movie ).

Wonderful surprise to have Rich back on SoT. Welcome back, Rich. You’ve been missed. Stephen King was a favorite author for me when he started. And the closing minutes of Carrie made me literally jump out of my seat at the movie. Haven’t kept up with all his writings and movies but the lust today would be.
    1. The Shawshank Redemption. This is one of those rare movies for me that if I come across it channel surfing, have to stop and watch the movie no matter where I come in to the film. A great adaptation and one of my favorite movies overall. Great casting, excellent story and holds my attention since the first time seeing it.
    2. Carrie - the original film. What a cast and only the second movie to make me literally jump up in fright. Unforgettable.
    3. The Shining. Actually liked the book better than the film but Nicholson is just so great in this film.
    4. The Dead Zone. Couldn’t put the book down and bought it as soon as it was printed. Great story made into an equally riveting movie.
    5. A Pardo Mulligan with The Green Mile and Stand By Me. The first for the great story and cast and how it ends. The second because you knew the kid - River Phoenix- was going to be a great actor just from this role. Pity he died so you g.
Thanks, gents, for a highly enjoyable Episode.

The Hills Have Eyes remake came out in 2006, not the early 90s. And speaking of remakes, I'm really looking forward to The Running Man remake as that one is going to stick more true to the novel while being very violent and dark as well. Can't wait to see that one.

    2) IT (The Movies)
    3) Pet Sematary(The original)
    4) The Shining(Kubricks and the reboot were both good)
    5) Carrie
I am very biased with IT. The book, the miniseries, and the movies were great. I prefer the book. I first tackled that behemoth of a paper back when I was 12 or 13 and have read IT every year since. The miniseries is a timeless classic and that ensemble cast are who I picture when I read the book. To top it off Tim Curry as every ones favorite clown. The reboot movies were done very well and have no issue with the casting, the production, or other parts except for the ritual of CHUD part. They could of done it closer to the source material.

I dont know how we knew about it, but when i was like 13 or 14, me and my friends would always say "Thanks for the ride, lady!" I never saw Creepshow, and i dont remember anyone every mentioning thats where it was from.....but we used it for my entire time in junior and senior high school. To finally find out where it was from was crazy....i had to text my best friend to tell him.

Shining, Delores Claiborne, Christine, Firestarter. There's so many. The 1st book I ever read? Night Shift by Stephen King. I was about 9 or 10, I found it upstairs at my grandparents. So much of his work has been made into movies. The story Jerusalem's Lot which opens this book of short stories, which I felt would make the best movie, has finally come to fruition.

I liked the "Rose Red" miniseries. Another one I like is not one that gets a lot of mention. It was part of the "Nightmares & Dreamscapes" collection, called "The End of the Whole Mess". It was adapted for television and starred Ron Livingston and Henry Thomas. It's not very long (probably an hour with commercials) but it's good. Not as good as the version in the book of course.

Even though it’s not a Thriller or Horror I still think Stand By Me is a brilliant film from a Stephen King Story, about adolescence and loss of innocence ( it is a story about kid’s wanting to join in the hunt for a dead body and claim the reward for finding it ) so it still has slightly dark themes in it 👍🏻

There was a short story about a serial killer, the man who loved flowers, I think that’s what it was called, it was in one of his earlier books. But he never made a movie about it, that would’ve been interesting. Anyway, love you guy they take on Stephen King films. See you later.
