Sam Kieth told me that the mtv deal he made was the thing that stopped image from giving him the boot. They were close to giving him the axe but they saw the kinda cache that it was to have a cartoon on mtv.
The Maxx cartoon had these shifting aspect ratio/split screen/panel animations I always wanted to do in live action and almost got to do on Random Acts of Violence… What a crazy cartoon and adaptation.
Please don't shorten the Wizard eps! Seeing the industry in the 90s through your eyes is part of the fun. We'd probably miss out on interesting bits like Ed walking past muffins to buy comics in a bakery.
My first published work was in Bizarre Hereos! When I was 16, I met Don Simpson at the Chicago Comicon and picked up some issues. The same night, I pencilled a pin up to give him the next day. He INKED IT, PUBLISHED IT, AND SENT IT BACK!!! To be inked by a Master at such a young age still blows my mind 27 years later. Totally made my life right there. Anyway, a couple weeks ago I decided to revisit the pin up to slowly pick away at coloring it in between gigs. Hiope to knock it out soon. Would absolutely love to hear an shoot interview with Dandy Don
Kang used to read Wizard as a young boy. His mother would be shopping for groceries at the local Food Lion and Kang would run to see if the new Wizard had dropped.
Yoooooo! A Frank Teran blast! Loved his Punishers. My uncle had a comic store in North Jersey at that time & turned out Frank lived down the street. Came across Puns 94 & 95 that he signed last year. Dude had a sick almost graffiti style. Should have been huge
You guys should talk about the differences between the ONE version of one punch man vs the polished version. Lots of interesting process stuff from goofy web comic to epic.
That story about the letters section with the question about Spawn reminded me of this issue of Game Pro that had an article about John Tobias. At the end of it they had an address where you could send fan mail I guess and I pitched John a Mortal Kombat game I dubbed "Mortal Kombat: Bloodline". My idea was kind of like a prequel which featured Quan Chi. I think I also drew him a version of Scorpion that was basically a ninja version of Ghost Rider, flaming skull and all.
There was a comic shop in Penn Hills, right off of the exit before you got onto 376 heading into Pittsburgh that my dad would take me to, that’s how I discovered Wizard. I distinctly remember this issue but can’t remember the name of the shop. It was right down from the Penn Hills shopping center that has the DMV in it, I think it was Rodi Road There was a Ferris supermarket/pharmacy in Murrysville that always had a fairly decent selection of stuff, I remember getting a lot of the X-Men books there especially after my parents divorced because there was a therapists office above the grocery store my mom took us to a few times
I was able to find some bagged comics at my local Meijer (Basically a Wal-mart, but you don't feel gross shopping there). Most of them were throw away DC comics that must have been extras from who knows where, but it seemed cool that they were around. Though in the Book/Magazine section, there is an end cap dedicated to Viz/Manga books. Sometimes I wonder why they don't just put that stuff in the toy section, but the real estate of the books/mags are more accessible than the toys per se. Pretty sure there are more Marvel and DC action figures and t-shirts than comics in these grocery stores.
Hello my name is David Craig and I was hoping that you could help me find the wizard comics magazine issue that had the drawing contest crossing the hulk with any character in the marvel universe. I tied for second in that contest and it was tagged by wizard as hunk a hunk of burning hulk. I'm trying to find it to hand down.
Todd's E.G.O. article is spot-on. Everyone talks about the speculators leaving as the downfall of the 90's, but nothing compares to the damage done by the distributors doing exclusive deals. Very quickly many small publishers went from having 6 or 7 distributors to 0 outlets for their books.
I'm a huge fan of that era of JLI/JLa and that Adam Hughes run was great. He was a really great match for the kinds of stories they were telling, made me miss Kevin Maguire less.
The Waid/Garney stuff was pretty good. I liked reading it, but the run was already going to be cut short by.... HEROES REBORN! The deal had been made already.
Definitely get in touch with Lapham.
Sam Kieth told me that the mtv deal he made was the thing that stopped image from giving him the boot. They were close to giving him the axe but they saw the kinda cache that it was to have a cartoon on mtv.
Oh man, feels like forever since we got a Wizard review.
I think this must have been my first one. I remember every single page of this stupid thing
“Bryan Lee O’Malley shoot interview” has a nice ring to it.
Big ups Kevin O'Neill, really loved his Marshal Law stuff. Would love for you guys to check out an issue of that.
The Maxx cartoon had these shifting aspect ratio/split screen/panel animations I always wanted to do in live action and almost got to do on Random Acts of Violence… What a crazy cartoon and adaptation.

Silvestri leaving Image happened later on. That all went down after Lee and Liefeld went back to Marvel for Heroes Reborn.
That Magic ad on the first page is a Frazetta swipe. That's the cover of Blazing Combat #1.
Hulk Grand Design! I’m there?
Remember when Wizard cast Danzig as wolverine? But I think they successfully cast Patrick Stewart as prof X
They did.

Please keep the reviews long! These are great time capsules of that era.
HULK GRAND DESIGN!!

Oh, so glad to hear you mention El Eternauta, from my country! Can you do a review of that comic sometime? Greetings from Argentina!

Weapon Zero was really cool. I liked Joe Benitez's armor designs.

My letter's right below the Nick Fury picture; I asked how he lost his eye. I must have been 14 or 15.
A bigger question is how he turned white to black?

Ahhh my first Wizard issue. I’ve been waiting for this for years.
Man I seriously miss this mag. I was always so enthusiastic and excited to see a new ish on newsstands... Review them all!

i have the weapon zero in german leanguage 1-11 buy in 1998? 1999 ? its so cool art style its a must have
I honestly think Rick Vietch and Bryan Talbot's Teknophage was the highlight of Gaiman's Tekno Comics.
Beyond Oasis is INCREDIBLE. Worth playing for aesthetic homework alone.
Pretty sure this was my first issue of wizard back in jr high. Still have it, but it's seen better days
Beyond Oasis, I played that back in the day and I do not understand why it doesn't get more love. Amazing game. The Zelda of the Gensis.

Damn 🤯 Wizard magazine? Are these old mags worth anything? I've got a stack of them in mint condition
Eddie P has the book closed on Toddmeister impressions, nobody else can do it.
Please don’t shorten the episodes!!

Does Cap on the cover have 6 fingers?
On the GUAC!

Yay
More Adam Hughes and brian Stelfreeze coverage please!
When are we getting that Jim SHOOTer interview? Don't deny your destiny. Do it.
Top Cow definitely seemed to keep finding good young artists to teach. I feel young artists should still jump into Top Cow to get there chops.
I think that Kenshiro has the most wrinkles on his forehead.
