STORYLINE:
Chess champion Bobby Fischer met the press in Iceland on Friday, his hair and beard neatly trimmed but his opinions still bristling on his first full day of freedom.
Fischer announced that he was finished with a chess world he regarded as corrupt.
He also said he was happy to be in Iceland, which granted him citizenship to pave the way for his release from detention in Japan, where he was held on a US extradition warrant.
Fischer is a popular figure in Iceland, the site of his most famous match - the 1972 world championship victory over Boris Spassky that became a symbol of Cold War rivalry.
Chess players in Iceland said they were thankful for the role he had played in promoting in the country.
In a rambling news conference at his hotel, the combative Fischer sparred with US journalists who asked about his anti-American tirades.
Fischer was freed on Thursday after nine months' detention in Japan, where he had been held by authorities for trying to leave the country using
an invalid U.S. passport.
Japan agreed to release him after he accepted Iceland's offer of citizenship.
His fiancee, Miyoko Watai, the head of Japan's chess association, accompanied him to Iceland.
Fischer railed against the governments of Japan and the United States, and other Coalition allies on Friday.
"The United States is evil. The United States is you know, (they talk about) the axis of evil. Well what about the allies of evil - what about the United States, England, Japan, Australia? And so on. These are the evil-doers," the former champion said.
Fischer, whose mother was Jewish but who has a history of anti-Semitic outbursts, accused "the Jew-controlled US government" of ruining his life.
Fischer, 62, is wanted by the United States for violating sanctions imposed on the former Yugoslavia by playing an exhibition match against Russian Boris Spassky there in 1992.

There's a little more to it than that.
He was repeatedly warned not to do it because Bobby fischer was big money and Yugoslavia was going to use that money they made to get around the sanctions, which is a much bigger deal than I think people realize. They were committing serious war crimes. Bobby helped fund that because he was whackadoodle. Nobody really blames Bobby for it as a moral failing, because he is crazy as all get out, but the idea he was being unjustly persecuted for clearly doing something wrong that hurt people on a very wide scale is just delusional. Wasnt even like the war crimes were allegations at the point of sanctions it was well documented ethnic cleansing.

@Siddhant Satao It is widely understood in the chess community that Karpov would have been a significant challenge who very easily could have forced a draw or two early and then closed the gap in later games to strip Fischer of the title. Not a good stylistic matchup for Fischer and he was incredibly rusty. The physical aspect of long form chess is often overlooked, and fischer was in no state to compete against anyone near his level under the FIDE scoring rules. His natural ability over the board would have only carried him so far.

If you read a biography of Fischer you'll see that it is actually his mental condition that enabled his extreme obsession with learning chess in the first place. Killing the negotiations with Karpov might have been a mistake; if the match was possible it was a mistake, and if Fischer was so unreasonable that nothing possibly could be agreed upon well then maybe not but I don't think that was at all conclusive.
Honestly defending World Champion is not going to be a walk over regardless of how rusty he is, I think his demands might have been more just simply being "difficult" than being "scared" and desperate to avoid the match.

I can't even survive being quite badly humiliated facing a middle-game forced mate by Gawain Jones in a simultaneous against (can't remember exactly but) over 10 club level players in Johannesburg [I didn't take it too hard and if I was White I very certain that I either would have missed the opportunity to attack or have led a miscalculated attack]. [That was in 2011 I had a mixed first season in the B club league division losing as many as I won (with very few draws), I am sure I have improved a bit since then though.]
I've seen loads of Fischer's games it would be very one sided. Each hypothetical game against Fischer would basically have been a test of endurance to see how long I can survive. Hypothetically reaching an endgame would probably signify quite an achievement and a poor game by Fischer.
Fischer was as good as some of the best grandmaster games of today (but I am in no position to make comparisons). Where I would make some kind of stupid move in a position I should win or have a forced win, Fischer would find it almost every time, and if a game looks hopeless with multiple threats Fischer would almost always find counter-play to get at least even but probably a better position.
I to be brutally honest lack that talent currently, and 5 move plus problems I tend to not get without really taking loads of time and perhaps not quite getting it maybe just a correct first move. I am far too prone to relatively basic errors and in games there is no siren that goes off to warn you of forced play; Fischer seemingly almost didn't need a siren.
