- There has been a push to get the Federal Government to raise rent assistance for retirees as new data reveals two-thirds are living in poverty.
Kara Kennedy is a struggling retired renter and she joins us.

How about our government stops spending millions of dollars on New years Eve fireworks and instead give it to the retired elderly???
Wish I had millions I would help these people sad that some have to live this way
Everyone should be on the same salaries as the hosts on the project, problem solved! 💰
What a revolting system - Liberal or Labor - this evil disregard of Australians has come to a peak!
yeh Labour was for the poorer side but they decided to remain in power more than standing for the poors so yeh technically the same people!
Rent assistance needs to go up, this is ridiculous
I get a whole $13 a fortnight lol
@ very sad I hope things get easier for u 😢
The sad thing is that any increase will go to property investors meaning they can buy more properties and make this get worse.
No
Landlords' expectations and those of the real estate need to be reduced around how much rental income should be paid out from a renter, regardless of age or job.
Rents need to go down!
You judge a society by the way they treat the poorest in that said society.
Albo doesn't have to worry about being homeless the government supplied a house for him and his mother when they needed it
Yep I get it. My rent has gone up another 50 dollars again. So my rent is $670 now. I’ll have to work tell
I die. Worked since I was 15 yrs old It’s scary.
My rent went up by $200 in one yr and lost my job so I am working casual from $550 to $750 and I release every time real estate comes to check on the place that's when they put the rent up and they won't fix the problems so nowadays I just left the problems
Australians have been conned by the politicians they elect.
The old school mobile cheap home parks for over 55 are fast disappearing. The ones that still exist on the central coast above Sydney are thriving places - close knit communities. The old bedsit flats - designed for war widows were also perfect. These haven't been built since the 70's . Tiny home communities are all the rage in the states. Again, very cost effective. Why are there no more boarding houses being built in the inner cities? Where has a new caravan park been established anywhere? They just don't. There are so many towns inland from the coast that could easily house all these types of developments. None have been built in 40 years. The government could easily cover the land costs. Tenants cover the housing element. Why does all governments ignore these cheap options? Why don't they legislate for the protection of the current ones into trusts - which can never be bought out. No politician ever backs these old school cheap housing options. They ignore them as they are bought and redeveloped into much richer housing. Housing trusts, using government owned land that is donated - means the costs for the actual housing types would be much lower for the tenants. Why can't the retired workers on minimum wages - aspire to a mobile home , bedsit or tiny home type dwelling in a no frills gated park block? None of these types of housing have been built or planned for in 40 plus years. High rise units are not the right option. Strata costs are too high. Maintaining the costs of lifts, building inspections, maintenance over the life of the building. It is not realistic for high rise. Al political parties in Australia simply have no idea about how to look after the hard working lower working class. They did in the period from WW2 to the end of the 70's.
First of all, we need to get the correct solution to the argument.
WE DO NOT give 40 - 50 % more to landlords. They will have to reduce the amount they expect to obtain by renting a property. The government's own figure is NO MORE THAN 30% of anyones weekly earnings goes to a landlord. This side of the argument needs to be a part of the solution BEFORE we give more tax dollars to landlords and real estate agents.
Plain some have no idea . Reality says otherwise..
Borrow the money and rent out to someone, see how the costs are, most landlords are a single home investor. Government needs to provide more housing, Not spend on big ticket items with there name on a placard
Well this all certainly isn't sustainable, so where do we as a country go from here
Shame on governments everywhere, destroying the countries they claim to love, money will never wipe the shame
*Lucky my dad had a little left over in his super and brought a house for $58k in regional WA.*
Smart thinking

The governments policies caused this hence they must increase rent assistance. Housing is a human right.
Retired public housing tenants need to be moved to regional where no jobs because workers need homes
Private renters don't get a house to rent for life
This is ridiculous Australian retirees should not have to live like this. But the government still allow high immigration levels putting more pressure on accommodation availability.
Let them protest all they want so long as they pay their taxes
When did Australia become like this?! or is it a world wide trend?!
It is so sad that these people have worked hard and paid their taxes all their working lives, and nobody cares. There is so much greed and vested interest in the housing industry, and the law makes just don't care. Such a terrible situation. Where is our compassion for our citizens like this.
Not just that, crimes are everywhere now, my house has been vandalized by Juveniles, I become homeless too.
Sell all public housing houses to private market and use the money to build apartments of 30 000 a block
buy a house before you buy a dog.
A dog is a lot cheaper than a house. Many Australians will never be able to afford a home dog or no dog Rich overseas investors can have both.
Landlords allow animals? Priorities.
What a disaster this Labor government is.
The coalition didn't spend 1 cent on housing in 9 years but don't let facts get in the way of your ridiculous opinion.
What a disaster most people are.
@Aussie-Titan must be a federal election coming up! 😂
But social and affordable housing are a state government responsibility.
This is why vanlife is getting so popular
As i grew up in this life, i believed we all would be on top of this world system pressure...
Why is it on top of us all😮 and it is crushing each of us...😮
Could it be because you allow it to crush you?
As soon as this happens. Just watch the rents, go even higher😢
Yes!
“ma and pa” investors should not be burdened by rental crisis as the cost of living is squeezing people out. For decades ‘social housing’ has not met the demand and/or is being used to house refugees while the waiting lists are as long as a decade plus. The government’s response is negligent whereby they spend hundreds of millions towards sporting and entertainment venues. Australians have always had a very poor future proofing attitude. At retirement pension age women can do without false nails and well kept pets. These two women do not represent the greater number of women facing homelessness as they’ve obviously not invested in preparing for life ahead. Most women in Australia are facing these problems due to housing shortages and being single, widowed etc. Family units have been trashed by movement away from traditional care. Planning ahead for retirement is a must curriculum addition.
This is so sad it's worse than worse 😔
*grumbles in boomer* buying too much coffee *shakes fist*
Love you lady
