Concerto Ballata for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 108
Alexander Rudin, Cello
Moscow Symphony Orchestra
Igor Golovschin, Conductor
I am totally captivated by this work. At first I thought it sounded beautiful but shallow, but I couldn't ignore its' depth when I heard its' great cadenza from 12:38 culminating at 16:24 with an "enigmatic" Elgarian outburst, and an impressive conclusion. Another theme, which begins the work, caught my ear due to its' resemblance to "You'll Never Walk Alone". So in a way, I felt was listening to old friends in a wonderful new light. This concerto is quite impressive, and I believe worthy to be performed often in concert. Rudin's performance and tone are great, adding that much more to my appreciation.
