  • In this free video lesson, RV expert Dave Solberg joins Lewis Callaway of Callaway Technologies to discuss the history of campground WiFi and the options now available to RVers. The guys begin by talking about how much the internet situation has evolved since email first emerged until now, when everything is fast and the options are virtually unlimited.
The way things used to be, you had to visit your campground’s visitor center and probably wait a bit to get online. Nowadays, most RV campgrounds are equipped with highly capable modems, either at a single location or across the entire grounds. Lewis explains why that might vary, and provides a simple recommendation for discovering what kind of campground WiFi setup you’ll have access to when you pull into your spot.
Additionally. Lewis recommends the best way to learn ahead of time what the internet situation is going to look like once you arrive. All you have to do to avoid surprises is check out traveler reviews on sites such as TripAdvisor. Search around for mentions of campground WiFi and internet experiences.
If you see a general consensus that the internet was speedy and reliable, that’s fantastic news and you know you can do all your streaming and Zooming and gaming and what not. If you notice many reviewers saying they had issues with spotty coverage or that they were surprised to find only a single access point, you know to plan accordingly. Do a little research and you’ll be prepared no matter the circumstances of your campground WiFi.

You should consider a change in your title. You did not tell me how to maximize my wifi while camping. I kept waiting for what I as the camper need to purchase to improve or boost the campground wifi. You gave me a history, hope that campgrounds are upgrading and how to read reviews. I like internet as much as the next person, but I have never and will never select a campground because of its wifi. There are probably a dozen other things that matter and are more important when selecting a campground.

That dish you got there, the one that can go miles via line of sight. if I have that pointed at a park maybe a 1/4 mile away, can I use my home wifi with that single dish or do I need something else in the middle first?

What Lewis failed to communicate was not every Campground is able to afford access points to enhance their Router to each camp site. The other info he missed is those WiFi are not secure and you are at risk of hackers.

That is true, it is expensive to install a large system. However, we've seen parks starting to charge for connectivity or build it into their amenities.
As for the security, that isn't necessarily true. The security level of a properly configured RV wifi system would be the same as a public WiFi network. When you hear about public WiFi hacks, it is primarily for people using unencrypted protocols like HTTP and FTP. If your site is using HTTPs, your connection is encrypted so you are not at risk of someone playing man-in-the-middle. If you have to use a HTTP only site, then I would recommend using a reputable VPN to tunnel your traffic.
