As a child, I played in these streets, my friends and I ... There was a set of Project buildings, a couple blocks away... I believe it was Roosevelt Street, Next door to the fire station, and across the street from a Very Large Church. We would go to Maxwell, and find whatever we needed, from food, to Shoes, to clothing... I moved to Milwaukee in the early 90's after graduating from High school.... and found my heart broken, when I returned to see, all this new development. I understand growth. But this appeared to me, as if the city was Ashamed of this area. As if it was an ugly scar they wanted to cover up. I'm glad this video and more like them are here, so I can show my kids, what growing up in these days were like. It funny... I felt Safer, walking those streets THEN... Than I do Most streets, today.

Maxwell Street in the 70's was real street culture, like they don't make it anymore.

I share everyone's sentiments. I am proud to be one of Smoky Joe's grandsons. Named after Joe Bublick. This is the first time i have seen this video and so cool to see Smoky Joes profiled here. wonderful

Thanks for watching Cora. If you like blues music you should check out ChiTownSoundz another of our stations that is more music centered. There is one doc in particular called Chicago Blues made in the early 1970's that has a lot of the legends on it. Here's a link to the station.

That's what does happen a lot..but London still has it's markets which bring in a living for people and are an essential part of that city. Being born and bred in Chicago I can say I think it is a great city in many ways, but sadly those at the top of government, education and business do not seem to value it's history and what makes it Chicago!..to it's disadvantage.

What is there now?... a rich people neighborhood that might as well be out in the suburbs. City hall knows how to fuck up a good thing.

University Of Illinois wanted it for expansion ($$$) and The Office of Mayor of Chicago saw a gold mine and destroyed it! Not much now and for years..apartments for the rich and generic plastic food and coffee places. Shame isn't it?

Thanks for watching George I've been a bit distracted the last month or so. It is sad about all that's left is the old Maxwell St. police station that now houses the university's force now. I've posted another video that has it with some more of the area's history. ua-cam.com/video/PDoMNlC3Ehs/v-deo.html
