You Can Build the Best Kayak Storage Rack - Cheap & Easy!

- I thought I would share this in case anybody else needs an idea on how to build a storage rack for your kayaks.
I tried to include enough info so that you could exactly duplicate this rack if you want to, but one of the neat things about this plan is how customizable it is.
Using PVC pipe and fittings like I've done, with just minor changes you can make a rack to fit one kayak or as many as you want. You can mount it to a wall like I did, make it stand alone with support legs or even put wheels on it. You can put shelves on both sides if you want to.
To build one like mine, it can be done in a day and it's relatively inexpensive too.
Questions are welcome. Just leave in the comments below and I will do my best to give you a good answer if I can.
Hope this is helpful or at least interesting to somebody.
Thanks for watching!

Awesome!
Thank you! I appreciate you watching.
Great video. I am confused about the need for the "wood shelves". couldn't you just put 90's on the ends of the arms and pvc across the front vs putting caps and wood? Then it would be completely waterproof.
My original design did not include the shelves. However, when I contacted Pelican International, and showed them my diagram, they provided the following advice.
"Our kayaks are made of a polyethylene type of plastic that has memory capacity. When a kayak is stored in any other way than on a solid flat surface you may eventually see small pressure points where the kayaks weight was supported. Therefore we recommend right side up on a solid flat surface."
Based upon this advice, I added the shelves. So far, no bumps have developed. Also, I painted the wood shelves and usually keep the tarp cover over the rack. So far, five years later, no degradation of the wood.
Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching!
Cool. Didn't know kayaks would eventually have indentations. Thanks for the info
Lol, don't want you kayaks to get wet from the rain, had to laugh at that part. I like you easy set up, might have to try that on the side of my shop. About how much did all of that rack parts cost, roughly?
Thanks Gary. Yeah, gotta be careful and don't let it rain on your kayak! Lol
I had a lot of stuff left over from other jobs so not exactly sure, but I estimate the cost of the pvc pipe and fittings plus one sheet of plywood right around $75 to $85. So even if you had to buy all that plus the hardware and tarp, should be under $100. Not too bad considering the fun and entertainment you get out of doing it. Good luck with yours.
I understand you never use that door, but now there's no light coming in that window either! Is this setup still in use 5 years later? How has it held up?
Five years later this rack is still in use and holding up very well. I made a small alteration to the shelf supports a couple years ago, but other than that haven't done a thing to it. And there's plenty of light in the sun room too. Lot's of windows.
what hardware did you use to fasten to wall?
To fasten the frame to the wall, I installed a masonry bolt into the brick wall and then used a piece of wire to anchor the pvc frame to the bolt. Thanks Brendan.
You do good work my man!
Thank you sir. And thanks for watching!
Woodglut has a lot of designs to choose from.
I've heard they have over 16,000.
@@Smilin_Don Indeed 👍
Very nice and creative. Nice job. See "Karin and Larry at Home" for a completely enclosed three unit shed. I wanted to protect our kayaks from weather and animals.
Thanks Larry. There's definitely more than one way to skin this cat heh? Nice job on the shed. It looks great.
nice rack Don lol, bazza from Campervantics said to come by and say hello. :)
Hello river bed inspector and welcome. Thank you! 👍
I hate it when my kayak gets wet. 😆 Lol Nice job Don, and pretty nice, straight cuts for using a hacksaw. My rack from treated lumber is looking rough after a few years of weather. I may have to copy this. Thanks.
Yeah, I expect this rack will hold up to the weather pretty well, especially if I keep the tarp over it most of the time. I didn't mention that I put a coat of paint on the plywood shelves too. They're the weak link, but can easily be replaced if they start to break down. Glad somebody caught my humor about the kayaks getting wet. Thanks Tony!
I made one similar to yours, but in wood. Made a video about my 3 kayak build in wood, but thanks for posting yours, because some people aren't comfortable using saws, etc.
Just watched your video -- well done. Thanks Jason. Happy trails
Glad my blueprint worked well for you, Dad lol. Lookin' good!
LoL ... In case I didn't tell you, I'm very proud that my daughter invented the kayak rack as well as the kayak. You're funny Sarah! Thanks
Great build Don! That was interesting and I loved the ending lol
HaHa! Just keeping it real buddy. I don't think I would make a very good actor. Thanks Doug!
Great kayaks and a great video on how to build a storage rack! Thanks! I'm looking forward to getting mine off the rack and into the water again - I'm sure you guys are, too!
Yes, we love our Pelican kayaks! And we are definitely looking forward to getting them back in the water. Glad you liked the video. Thanks!
Hey Don, my old treated lumber kayak rack is about gone and I remembered your video. Hows it holding up after a couple of years and would you change anything?
Hey Tony, it's hard to believe two years has passed since I built this kayak rack. Time flies. The rack has held up really well. It's a strange coincidence, but just about a week ago, I made a small alteration to the shelf supports to make the rack even more sturdy. Besides that I haven't made any mods to the original. I am in the process of putting together a short video to show what I did. Stay tuned.
@@Smilin_Don Thanks don. I'll be watching for it. You and Sweetart take care.
Cool to see this I've been thinking about the very model my hardware store is selling sometimes they hit around $100, also that little dog is awesome.
Sounds like a good deal to me. Yeah, he is getting old now but still the coolest dog ever. Thanks for that and thanks for watching.
Good job! What do you estimate the cost is to build as shown? Thx
I had some of the stuff left over from other jobs so not exactly sure, but I estimate the cost of the pvc pipe and fittings plus one sheet of plywood right around $75 to $85. So even if you had to buy all that plus the hardware and tarp, should be under $100. Not too bad considering the fun and entertainment you get out of doing it. Thanks Joe and good luck.
Can't make it for that cost now. It would have to be double that
Great build but you planning on opening that door there?
Thanks. I thought about that, but that room has two exterior doors and we only use one of them. The one you see here is never used.
I am sure you did enjoy making that Storage rack :))
I certainly did enjoy this project. Good productive way to spend a day outside. Thank you my friend!
Adding two fishing kayaks to go along with a canoe we already have, can’t have these things laying around all over the place, lol, this looks like a real workable rack for them. Thanks for posting this, very helpful.
That's excellent. You're right...can't have them just laying around taking up space. Thanks for telling me this Bungalobob. Glad you found it to be helpful.
good, but when weather get hot, horizontal arms will bend down
You're right. In three years I have made just one minor alteration. About a year ago, to the shelf supports to make the rack even more sturdy. And the rack is still holding up very well. I have thought about making another short video showing what I did. Do you think I should do that?
Thanks Alex!
I just finished building a kayak rack for a customer last night. I used framing lumber and 1/2 inch plywood but followed your basic design. Thanks again for posting. It was very helpful!
Excellent! Thank you for letting me know this.
Looks like a fine job and makes your covered porch usable again 👍🏻
Here it has been five years since and this old rack is still doing it's thing and we are still enjoying our covered deck. Don't you love it when something goes to plan?! Hope all is well up your way friend.
Right on, thanks for sharing Don. Great idea, like the simplicity. BTW - I have sent you a message in the youtube messages. Wanted to give you a heads up in case you don't monitor those.
Thanks Jim ... yeah something to keep me out of trouble for an afternoon. Ha! I will check my messages after while.
Thanks, was looking for something similar but looking for a way to secure them
Thanks Patrick. Happy trails
if you want to secure them to the shelves, you could add eyebolts to the end of the shelves and on the inside near the uprights and use bungee straps or tie downs...
Nice rack- is it just tied into the wall at the one spot on top?
Thank you John. I tied it in at three points -- the one you see at top middle and on each side of the frame just under the middle shelf. It's secured pretty well this way. Coincidentally, just yesterday I made a slight alteration to make the shelves a little more sturdy. Turned out very well and for almost no cost. I will most likely post another short video to show how I did it. Thanks again.
I prefer to build with woodprix plans.
I've heard they make it very simple and easy to follow the plans. I went with pvc rather than wood for this project since the rack will be outside and exposed to the elements. Thanks for stopping by.
Nice, but where did you get those cockpit covers that fit?
Thanks! We made our own cockpit covers. Here's how we did it

Good idea..I liked and subscribe..
Thank you
Thank you. I am going to build one like this.
Nice. I recently made a slight modification to mine. Working on video now ... should be up soon. Thanks for watching.
WOW! How do you open that screen door with that in the way?
I thought about that, but that room has two exterior doors and we only use one of them. The one you see here we never use.
Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome. Thank you for watching.
Great build Don! Mine are currently tucked inside a small sailboat, which is in a garage for the winter. Hopefully I'll have to find a place for them this summer as the sailboat finds a home at a dock somewhere - I might duplicate this! Nice blooper reel too. 😀
Thanks! Great, I hope you can use this. Yeah we had a little fun with this one. Keep Smilin'
Great idea... my garage and my wife thank you.
It's great to reclaim your garage or covered deck and even better if it makes the wife happy! Thank you ... and you're welcome!
I made it myself. Just take a fast look for woodprix.
Someone else mentioned it. Good luck.
@@Smilin_Don Awesome!
Nice job Don,stored away neat and tidy.Mine is secured to the side of my dad's house all tarped-up and ready for the forthcoming season. That PVC piping idea is a great inexpensive way of doing it too.A friend of mine used to keep her kayak outside without cover and it really warped it due to the sunshine, always best to cover it up.
That's too bad about your friend's kayak. Like you, we will keep ours tarped-up, safe and sound, and ready for warmer weather. Thanks Andy.
Great how to video , Hip Hip!
Kept me out of trouble for a day and had fun too. Thanks for watching!
Nice. You kinda blocked your screen door.
I thought about that, but that room has two exterior doors and we only use one of them. The one you see here we never use anyway.
Don ....you got to go check-out IntrepiDan his AT videos are the best AT vids ever.
I will check it out. Thanks
In terms of storing kayaks, the one thing I have learned up untill now, is that you do not store them flat on the ground, as it WILL dent your hull. So, the build was fine up untill the point you added the plate to rest them on. Good luck with those bumps! Unless your kayaks are dead flat underneath, I would ditch the plate. Otherwise a nice build! :D
Thank you Lars. Very interesting you should bring this up. My original design plan did not include the plates. However, when I contacted Pelican International, and showed them my diagram without the plates, they provided the following advice.
"Our kayaks are made of a polyethylene type of plastic that has memory capacity. When a kayak is stored in any other way than on a solid flat surface you may eventually see small pressure points where the kayaks weight was supported. Therefore we recommend right side up on a solid flat surface."
Based upon this advice, I added the plates. So far, no bumps have developed.
Thanks again for your comment and thanks for watching!
Nice solution for clearing out the deck. I have only one so I hung mine from the rafters in my garage. By the way I forgot to say from your last video, your new intro is awesome, the Texan in you really comes thru. Thanks for the video, looking forward to new adventures with you my friend. JT. from Oregon
I have to say that the credit for the new intro goes to my wife. I was just the model. She is definitely the artist around here. She surprised me with that. Thank you JT!
Nice I have 4 kayaks need to make it double sided thanks man
You're welcome. I'm glad you found this to be useful. I appreciate you watching.
