- Fresh out of the police academy and just two months into his service, 30-year-old Constable Callan Andrews had his life violently cut short while serving his community.
A psychology graduate from Nelson Mandela University, Andrews chose to follow in his father’s footsteps by joining the South African Police Service.
But a patrol vehicle that broke down in the notorious area of Katanga, Gelvandale, set the stage for tragedy.
He was fatally shot on New Year’s Eve while trying to push start the patrol vehicle.
His family is demanding answers, saying his death was preventable.
Newzroom Afrika's Sipha Kema has more on the story.

So sorry mama 😢😢
Am so sorry Mam for your pain, may God heal your heart…
We are sick and tired of the inadequacy from SAPS!
Exactly how can an unroad worthy police vehicle be on the road, or given or be driven in a notorious area. Loss of policemen in his manner is unacceptable 😢. Condolences to his family and friends. 😢
How can law enforcement like the police use an unroadworthy vehicle?
South Africa we r an angry nation
Its concerning even seeing police men and women walking to and from work😮
Mommy I feel your pain😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
How do you send an unroadworthy vehicle out in the first place
Sorry for this! Sue the Police, the ministry of Police! The family should be compensated! It doesn't bring him back or alleviate the pain, but it is a proactive step, you just need a good pro bono shark lawyer and pre-arrange the split for when you win (75% for family, 25% lawyers). Sue for 10 millions or more! Maybe you'll get it, or 5, or 2, or whatever. Just sue, don't just cry!
