The main problem with the original 1zz is it burns oil. That issue was fixed later on. The 2zz is a better naturally aspirated motor but it doesn't "like" high boost turbo setups. It's all about high rpms. It's a more complicated and expensive build (harder and more $ to repair) if you try to add a turbo. It's a lot easier to just build the 1zz and run higher boost. Those engines are readily available and don't have to worry about the CAM profile switch (lift) of the 2zz when tuning. Unless you want outrageous horsepower numbers, the 1zz will do just fine.
