  • In this installment of Project RG270, I go over how to overcome some of the issues you may encounter when retrofitting a pick guard onto a rear-routed guitar.

    You could have reshaped the pickguard by sanding it a little bit. That way you wouldn't need to reroute the pot holes.

      And the knobs would have hid any off-centeredness

    Thanks so much for this tutorial!!
    I'm doing the *exact* same project with a 270 I just purchased. I think I'm going to choose some pups that already have the mounting holes pre-installed. Should save some headache imho.

      Same here -- I have an rg270 that was my very first guitar over 20yrs ago -- I have like a dozen guitars these days but the RG has come out of the woodwork for it's awesome playing neck. It's just boring old black -- Dreaming of painting it Daphne Blue with a clear guard!!

    After you screw the pickguard screws into the body remove the pickguard and put a couple of drops of thin superglue into the screw holes. Don't reinstall the screws until the glue has fully dried. This will harden the threads for the screws and stop them stripping out.

    A few bits and bobs I like to do around the pickup switch when installing black pickguards - personal preference:
    1) Put a little strip of black electrical tape over the slot + screw holes. You can cut the slot with a knife and poke the screw holes with ... the screws. This hides the little sliver of finish showing through if you don't like that look (which I personally don't most of the time).
    2) If the guard is a three-ply BWB number then I draw on the white line inside the slot with a marker, again to hide the fact that there's a wide hole in the pickguard.
    3) Draw on the top of the switch housing with the same marker, so you don't see that golden nonsense shining through. I do this on all my guitars - pickguard or not - because I personally like the holes and slots to be black as a void. None more black.

      +PikkaBird Hey man! I think I recognize your screen name from SSO? I totally appreciate the tips, though my personal taste at the moment is to have everything exposed. I am toying with the idea of blacking out the mounting tabs on all of my direct mount pickups though, so who knows?! None more black! lol

      Axe Hacks Yup, that's me... And I do sometimes get the aesthetic of showing everything. The fascination comes and goes (so naturally I must have several guitars featuring both, right?)

    For future reference, I did the same mod to my RG270 using an RG350 pickguard, it fits much better that this, only a few modifications needed, the pot holes were way off, so I had to redrill them, I also had to sand one corner of the tremolo cutout on the pickguard to make it large enough for the RG270 cavity.
    And that's basically it, the HSH cutout is exactly the same, except for the width of the trem cavity, so there's no gap at all and no paint showing anywhere!

      Did the 350 pickguard you used have a big slot routed for the selector switch, like the one he used? Or was it the regular thin slot like you see on most of them? If so, did the screws for the selector switch line up too? I would like to do this on my 270dx. thanks!

    • @sl1nk3
      @sl1nk3 7 років тому

      Jason Reynolds mine was thin and the selector screws were aligned, but you'll have to route a cavity anyway because otherwise the selector will be too recessed and the tip of the selector will be coming off when using the neck or bridge positions.
      I personally ended up filling the back cavity and converting the guitar to front cavity, but you can also keep the back cavity and just drill some large enough holes covered by the pick guard

    why wouldn't you route the cheap plastic pick guard instead of the guitar

    • @MobiusGuitars
      @MobiusGuitars  8 років тому

      Because the pick guard & the guitar cost damn near the same amount & by slightly moving the placement of the hole in the body, everything else came into alignment.

    Dude, I've been waiting for this video for so long. I have a grg270 that is that exact same guitar and I wanted to know if an standard Ibanez pick guard will fit. Which pick guard exactly did you installed on the guitar?

    Great video! I also have a rg270 and installed a pickguard on it that came with it. Really looking forward to your next video haha I hate this trem. If you have that eBay seller info I'd love to replace my pickguard with one that fits the controls better like yours. Thanks!

    is there a reason you went with a 550 pickguard ..... do you think a 350 pick guard would fit

    How would I do the opposite, I have a premium rg870 that i bought it used with a pick guard, and I want it gone, how hard would that be? Should I just install a different one?

      I have an Ibanez RG350 from 2004 which is made in korea and it feels like a 1000$ guitar from 2018...Now for the same price range they are all china/indonesia cheap stuff...

  • @woolgum
    @woolgum 5 років тому

    How much did it all cost in total for this guitar? I’m thinking it might be the same price in just buying a better used guitar. I mean with good hardware and pickups already in it.
    But it sure is fun to mod. :)

      Just type in ibanez pickguard into eBay and look for perleguitars. He has two accounts and he makes tons of Ibanez stuff. He can even custom make one for you.

    I have a rg655 prestige and was thinking a hsh pickguard for a rg550 will work. just thinking about a different color pickguard. .do you happen to know if the rg550 pickguard works for the mij rg655?

    • @MobiusGuitars
      @MobiusGuitars  8 років тому

      +Brian J I'm not sure if it's an exact fit, but I'm pretty sure the RG655 is the Prestige version of the RG550/570. I put the link to the ebay store where I bought this pick guard, the seller has been helpful with fitment questions.

    • @TheCyborx
      @TheCyborx 8 років тому

      I also have that same model and I replaced the pickguard for a 550 one in a different color, it was not exactly the same as the stock one and my luthier had to drill an extra hole but after that it was completely fine.

    Why not add the single coil in the middle?
