Taika Waititi won the 2019 Best Adapted Screenplay Academy Award for his work on Jojo Rabbit, adapting it from the novel Caging Skies by Christine Leunens. But the journey from to the satirical screen version from the decidedly darker pages of Caging Skies wasn't just about casting himself as an imaginary Hitler friend. So just how did Waititi craft a heartfelt tale of a budding Nazi's relationship with a Jewish girl hiding in his home during the waning days of World War 2? The thing I admired in the movie was the use of the shoes of Scarlett Johansson, so when it gets to THAT scene, we don’t see her face but realize what just happened.

Haqem_HQ_25 The thing is that Scarlett Johansson’s character wears some really nice shoes. In several shots we see her talking to Jojo but we only see her shoes. Later in the movie, Jojo is walking around the town and finds the place where traitors get hanged. And we only see Scarlett shoes.
I looked forward to seeing a weird comedy, but was in fact surprised by the sadness in the story. The trailer sold the movie as a being purely a comedy.
it is for the best, if the sadness moments were shown in the proper context in the trailer it would have ruined how effective they were on first viewing

I loved when Hitler talked about making a fake floor out of books so Elsa could fall into a pit of bacon, amongst other terrors. I also loved Jojo's reaction when Elsa tells him Nathan is dead. He's so sheepish, it's adorable!

Taika’s film is so wonderful because it is drastically different from the book. It’s so full of heart and he took a very different approach than what we usually see in WWII films, that’s why it’s brilliant!!!
In the book, we see how hatred changes people, and why it’s bad. The movie takes more of an Adam and Eve-esque approach to its themes, showing how people can be led to follow the wrong morals, to be led astray. In this case, Hitler serves as the serpent and the people (like Jojo) serve as Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit.
EDIT: I'll be honest, didn't read the book. I just watched the movie. The book doesn't sound very interesting to me.

Yeah I loved how the movie almost seemed as if for children. I usually prefer, darker, more emotionally conflicted movies but the fact that this one spits in the face of everything you expect from a ww2 film makes it endearing and unique

@@c.smidgeon2847 While I don't think we should be that well armed, I also think that if the second amendment is to mean anything it cannot have limits. Criminals will get access to illegal weapons anyways, and the point of it is to allow us to fight a tyrannical government. And before anyone says that the founding fathers didn't think there'd be automatic or explosive weapons in the future that the second amendment would allow for, there already were automatics and explosives during the revolutionary war, they even tried to get some for the army, but they were too expensive.

Taika's movie is one of the rare exceptions where the movie is significantly better than the book, which was both depressing, and not very compelling. The movie is uplifting with multiple great messages.

A little late, but I agree. Perhaps I would have preferred the book had I not watched the film first, but I did not enjoy the darkness of the main character in the book. I also felt it dragged on after the war. I think the film captures the mood of the time really well and if I really want to explore the grim realities of this time, i prefer to read the factual accounts of the time; I like my fiction to be more satisfying.

You can see this when fraulein rahm says to the girls "And your job is to make babies for Germany", the movie does it much better because it makes a joke of it, but we all know it's real and we can understand that "Hey, this probably ain't that great" . It also shows toxic masculinity in the grenade scene, which imo is a great representation of toxic masculinity. Anyways, good film is good.

I think my favorite polarizing line from the movie was from Fraulein Rahm. But trailers and "best of" quotes miss the important first part.

This is an adaptation like The Princess Bride is an adaptation of a "novel". Taika Waititi's mother told him about the book and he loved her version of the story. When he read the book himself, he felt it didn't live up to the version he had in his head so he made up his own just using the same characters and basic premise.
The Princess Bride is actually a really faithful adaptation of the book. Unless you're talking about the framing device in The Princess Bride (that it's an abridged version of a nonexistent novel), in which case, yeah they're pretty similar

I was nervous about the movie because of the Nazis being portrayed in a comedic light, but after seeing the film the satire became apparent and it was honestly one of my favorite films of the year.
Actually I think making Nazis a joke is better than just making them evil. Because they wanted to be evil, it's better to poke fun at them, rather than making them what they wanted.
If I can make an argument in favor of it, let me say this. What dictators and hateful people like Hitler want is to be feared, and that fear is what keeps people in line. The opposite of fear and respect, is mockery. If you're mocking and making fun of something or somebody, it means you have no respect for it and you arent afraid of it. Think about how much less scary horror movies get if you're making jokes about them the whole time, that's a perfect example. So I would argue its downright necessary to be able to laugh at Hitler because that takes away the power people like him have. Also bear in mind when the movie makes jokes about this subject, it's never at the expense of Jews or the allies, its ALWAYS at Hitler's and the nazi's expense. Hitler in the kid's mind not only works the way this video describes it but the film itself constantly portrays him as goofy incompetent and cowardly. I personally would argue this movie does exactly what it sets out to do and does it really, really well.

Why are you so afraid that a movie might even slightly go against what you've been told? We're raised believing lies about nazis being comically vicious and evil, so you can rest assured no film will properly challenge that falsehood.
there is many movies and of course the famous monty python sketches that make fun of nazis. when it comes to satires, the italian movie by Roberto Benigni "Life is Beautiful" is the best. It is funny. Painfully so.

Not at all. The book Is not focus on Jojo's ideology but in his relationship with Elsa. He kinda get pass His support for Hitler in the first 1/4 of the book. If you want Is More like the perspective of the aftermath of war

The author bashes him in every way and the first thing they do is make him a loyal nazi almost as a justification for the events that take place in his life and the actions he makes.

It is a wonderful film. It's hard to describe it, you just have to see it. Magical, my favorite of last year. Though 1917 gave it a good run.

This movie is so great. I haven't read the book, but from what I have just heard, I don't think I would want to read such a joyless book. Instead, this film uses humor and sentiment to make the same point.

@@HelgaCavoli No, survival in a cruel world is one thing, using it as a source or entertainment is another. So while I would do what I had to in the real world to survive something like that, I am not going to waste a day or two reading about it when the film is more enjoyable.
I adored this movie. It was an utterly joyous romp with enough heartbreak and tension to keep it from being disrespectful. Sam Rockwell as Captain K really stole the show, although all of the performances were perfect.
I am am avid believer in reductio ad absurdum when dealing with racism. For anyone who doesn't understand, consider the following:
You have a belief. It's controversial, but you stand by it, it's part of you very being. Now you go to a friend, and you think they might have that same belief, or at the very least that you can sway them to your side. So, you tell them your belief.
And they laugh in your face.
There is nothing more defeating than that feeling, and I want every bigot to feel it. Their power comes from hate and fear. In a way fighting them makes them stronger. Every time a nazi is portrayed seriously in a film, they rally behind them, but there isn't a nazi in the world that likes "Springtime for Hitler". Fight hate with humor, make the bigots realize just how much of a joke they are.
Off topic a little but do you attack racism directed at anyone whether white or black or do you solely attack white people (which has become the norm what with phrases like "straight white male" being used as a semi insult online and in real life in some cases and a way of dismissal in others ) because if you attack all then fine, if you only view one as horrid however then you perpetuate a double standard and are yourself a blind to bigotry.

@easy eevee An argument as to why being "racist" to white people isn't actually racist so much as prejudiced is because there is an existing power system in which white people have all the power. If you define racism as an institutional struggle, then yeah, you can't be racist against white people because they aren't going to suffer from the same institutional struggle because they have the power.
So, this then changes the argument; though to answer the original question, I would laugh at anyone being racist who isn't in some kind of right to be; for example, if an African American/black individual were to make a racist jab at white people, well they very much have the right to feel a certain way because of the amount of years they were institutionally discriminated against. It doesn't make it a better action, but you also can't say those in power aren't somewhat deserving of it.
And this institution isn't dead; it's just gotten quieter.

Here I'll break it down for you, white people are not being segregated officially but unofficially they are not socially welcome within places like townships, it's very hostile, officially there are laws in place that distinctly discriminate against white people that dramatically lower the chances of being able to get into a working position even if more qualified due to a "checklist" of sorts, black people are the first to be accepted, then indian, then coloured, then white (bottom of the list) meaning in fact if I applied to 20 jobs (which I have done) if any of the above applied with even half of my qualifications they would take priority, and considering these laws have been implemented since 2003 that is enough time for people born after the "new south Africa" to be wrongly subject to this bias.
It is not a "right" to be able to perform hate against someone, it's called hypocrisy and you perpetuate it yourself, would you not call institutionalized racism being a system targeting a group of people to have their property taken from them even if they own it themselves after paying it off? After having bought it after these laws take place? Would you not call formal and informal bias against a group of people for a span of 20+ years, enough for an entire generation for those who weren't even involved to be racism? It is.
And on this topic moreso, why are there no attacks against Islamic countries when the Islamic slave trade was such an event that occurred over a longer period on Africans?
To say that it's someone's "right" to be a hypocrite, to attack someone else for the very reason they said they were never going to be shows a level of being guilt tripped to take it because of "the past" well the past is done, maybe people should stop being so damn petty about the hardships they didn't even experience and realize "oh shit we are perpetrating exactly what we hate" but that takes self awareness not present.
Also racism isn't based on institutional systems, the definition is the following throughout various dictionaries:"prejudice, discrimination or antagonism of another's race based on the belief ones own race is superior/ based on a hatred for another race" so no, by ther very definition they CAN be racist.
Thank you for showcasing the very thing I described of only seeing one as abhorrent, now let's stop before you get me going on the events of Zimbabwe that lead to many white individuals being forced out. Shall we?

1) Africa was colonized by white folk and colonization has had its ill effects on various countries that led to racist ideals.
2) I understand your point in not perpetrating the same actions that caused racism institutionally in the first place. And I'm not saying that racism isn't the same as any kind of discrimination, but what I _am_ saying is that more and more people are realizing that, even if for example, black people were racist towards white people, it would certainly not have the same effects as if it were the other way around.
3) If you're looking at it from an anthropology perspective, there are actually studies that pretty much cover the fact that racism over the years and the stress of it can create genetic health issues; the psychological states of familial generations does pass down (i.e. the psychology of a child whose parents lived through war will be different than one's who didn't, and not only by parenting alone). For example, you stating that people are "being petty about hardships they didn't even experience" may very well be completely wrong. Experience and fear is passed down through experience; they are _still_ experiencing hardship.
TL;DR, it may feel extremely easy to just sweep it all under the rug and say, "Do no harm" about it, but in actuality we've been doing that for years in the US, and the uncomfort you are feeling is in fact our country finally facing it for, perhaps really the first time.
But then again, glossing over the wrongdoings of history is kind of a European specialty, and the American apple doesn't fall too far from the tree, so correct me if I'm wrong.

I really liked this movie, and when I watched it a second time I noticed the symbolism of seeing Jojo’s mother’s shoes and such at eye level with JoJo until at one point she’s hanging and not standing. I thought it was a really clever way to portray her death and it oddly made it hit a lot harder that way.
Cpt. K is the best character in the movie, and anybody that tells you otherwise is being manipulated by mind-reading Jews.
He crept up on you. At first he just seemed like a punch clock villain but the further the movie goes, the deeper he gets. And that final scene with him...if you don't tear up for it you have no soul.

I live in Germany and Germans at the theater were both laughing and crying at this movie. 10/10 film
When I was younger, people in my life got me to feel less scared by laughing at things that scared me. through my teen years, the only way I was ever able to feel ok about the declining state of my mental heath was to laugh. I got supper into comedy and even started writing funny short stories. When my dad first introduced me to Taika, I wouldn't say I was hooked, but once I saw Jojo Rabbit, I really began to understand what he was trying to do.
The world sucks. It's always going to suck and life is always going to be hard, but that doesn't mean we can stop dancing and laughing and loving. in fact, we shouldn't stop dancing or laughing or loving in everything that happens, because that's the only way we can accept how broken the world really is.
The only way to really fight true evil like hate is to laugh at it and fight it with our own two hands. things don't settle into place and eventually we get better. In reality, we have to be responsible for telling ourselves life is always worth living.
so all that being said, I think that while the book is based on the movie, the themes of the book are how hate leads you down a dark isolating hole, while the movie says that love can pull you out of that hole. (basically the same theme in the other detection) And I think I want the one that's going to make me laugh and smile.

To me personally, this film is more of a landmark in how we are finally being more open about our past
but using dark humour to present it, up to this point most films depicting hitler or nazis, are usually serious war flicks or darker takes on the same time period like for example the remake of “inglorious basterds” by Tarantino.
I love this, whilst I don’t overly rate the film itself, it’s still something that would’ve been heavily frowned upon in the years before.
Wanderingwalker 1990 I have only ever seen one piece of media that showed Nazi soldiers as actual humans. I forget what it’s called but it was about a German woman in a cabin who got caught between American and German soldiers feuding. She forced them to surrender their weapons and the two squads had to deal with each other.
It was based on a real event and is a great movie, would recommend a watch

My own thoughts on the continual portrayal of the nazis as somehow less than human run along the lines of our own leaders not wanting the public to realize that they are no better. Consider this: Almost all the the films are done in English. But they keep the word "Furher" as if it were some grand, untranslatable title. It just mean "leader."

Loved the movie, it contains comedy and drama. All of the actors are brilliant especially Roman Griffin Davis and Thomason Mckenzie.
I get that you can’t talk about this within the frame of the series concept, but you didn’t really even touch upon the possible reasons that the film obscures or changes so much of the book. This is particularly clear in your reference to the ending scene merely as a “feel good ending” for children about the good of humanity, because it’s the ending scene which best exemplifies the director’s intention with the film’s plot. The scene plays a Bowie song and involves Jojo absurdly having gained blue denim jeans and a James Dean attitude/comportment. The point of the scene and the reference to Bowie and the triumph of American culture is to refer to the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the reintegration of East Germany. It’s not a simple “feel good ending” but a narratively complex superimposition that simultaneously destroys and reorients the sense of the plot upon which it works.

Eh in this case the book sounds like it is beating a dead horse, along with nonredeemable characters. And those normally enter into preaching territory a lesson we've all had hammered over and over again. The movie is satirical, funny, and has brightened it to get the message across without being preachy. Good work on the movie's part.
Too bad Death of Stalin wasn't a book. That's a good satirical look at Stalinism, and funny. OH well.

@@hannahquintua I don't think that's a controversial take given that most people are not partial to what's essentially pain p0rn. It's dark heavy fiction on things you could read in an uncensored history textbook. Even if well executed it's "market" just isn't that good because it competes with both more novel takes/perspectives and a very similar documentary of reality, which accomplishes most things the 'fan"fiction of it does.

Overly so... It's a little unfair for me to not give it a try before saying this but I'm more than content with my amazing satire written by political prisoners of the time.
It's heartbreaking we can't really share the best of local literature because it's simply hasn't been translated much if at all...

@Drakon590 The point i was trying to make is people should be allowed to make fun of everyone, including horrible people. Idk where you fall in this, but frankly i find it silly people pretend to care when someone makes a joke.
Yes i say pretend because literally nobody says these things without trying to make themselves look like good people. Meanwhile in reality they are far from good people if they have to protect people from humor.
And the thing is, bringing the Nazis a comical tone actually denounces their ways and actions. Yes, they were inhumane and awful in real life. However, if they’re only seen as this huge, undefeatable threat, then it actually gives some of the power back to the Nazi party. Those who still support these hateful ideas have a chance to jump behind the villains and be like ‘Yeah, we’re this powerful’. Meanwhile, the comical tone makes them look childish and stupid, which they were.It reminds us that these awful people were at the end of the day… just awful people. They weren’t supernatural, they weren’t immortal, just assholes.
We absolutely need both. The Nazi party was full of horrible people, who committed some of the darkest acts in mankind, and everyone needs to know and remember that. However, it is also good to tarnish them as these stupid children who wanna look tough.

Nothing chilled me more than the dinner scene where you listen to Jojo telling his mother how much better nazi's are than everyone else. It was chilling to hear a child talk like that. Best movie I've seen this year,

I absolutely loved this movie. It was laugh out loud funny but then would unexpectedly deliver an emotional gut punch. I think the Nazi's would have particularly hated being laughed at. Good job Taika!

The term adaptation is used so broadly it's basically useless because having the same characters and tittle makes it an adaptation, even if you did a 180 spin on it, put in the same category as a faithful cinematic recreation... :/

In a way, you could argue he isn't lying when he says "we did" in the movie. I haven't seen the film yet, so maybe there's something directly debunking this, but It could be viewed as a disassociation from the Nazis, so that the Nazi's losing means he and Eliza are the "winners" as non-nazis.
It's pretty clear in the movie that he lied because he doesn't want her to leave, I won't get into why because there are spoilers involved. The double meaning might be intentional for us, but the character himself was telling a lie.

Yeah, I got a bit mixed up. The opening chapter is in 1935, but it quickly cuts to the annexation. So my dates got muddled.

It's pretty much the same. Johannes learns of her death sometime after he scared her to tell him where Elsa is after she was relocated in the house. This leaves him with the responsibility of his grandma, Elsa, and their house. The book emphasizes the amount of work his mom did around the house and how her absence doubles onto the fact that Johannes lost his good hand. Rosie in the book was basically the string keeping the family alive and well while the dad was gone.
Yes, but she doesn't have the same personality. The person who's closer to Rosie's character Is Jojo grandma.

I love the radical kindness of Taika. He can tell the darkest stories with a lot of love to all characters.
Still won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay. Well done Taika for seeing the light in such a dark story.
