    I am awed by your depth of knowledge. I have just entered the shallow end of the streaming pool and don’t even know what I am missing as I have always just listened to albums, cds, and Apple Music. I just bought a NAD c328 and noticed the “streaming” RCA inputs and decided to see what they might add to my little set up. Thanks again for sharing!

    Thanks for a very thorough review, Hans, and good to see you back. I believe you explained our product even better than I could have done myself!
    You’re right in saying we don’t mention SOLO’s DLNA capabilities anywhere. It’s not meant to be a hidden feature - it’s just an oversight on my part! We’ll get that part added to our website ASAP.
    Best regards,

    Your hint about the clean power supply for the SOLO is absolutely right! I also stream via SPDIF to an ARES II, and replacing the in-the-box switching power supply of the SOLO with an iFi iPower2 does wonders. Cleans up the sound coming out of the ARES II much more than expected! Highly recommended.

    After having used my Argon Solo as a streamer to my low/mid cost-DAC, a Toppings D70S, for over a year (bought on a Black Friday's sale at discount rate), I just updated a few days ago with the SBooster LPS to feed the Solo, based on your review. Wow! Lots of additional space around vocals and instruments and as well a larger calmness in the sound picture and especially more natural sounding vocals.
    Money well spent! Nice 😊
    Thank you for the recommendation.

    I had the chance to test four of the "usual suspects" of streamers in an AB test with some friends. In terms of sound quality they results were quite amazing considering the vastly different prices. Price/value vise the Solo is amazing!

    Jewelcase is the right word for it. Cause inside are for the price, hidden gems. I had a Sonos Connect with my NAD C326BEE & Dali IKON 2 mk2 speakers + Dali 100 Sub. I was pretty satisfied with this setup and thought it was as good as it gets in its priceclass. Then i found the Argon Solo second hand at a good price, bought it and set it up via Windows 10 & Tidal HI-FI. I was litteraly blown away with the improvement in sound Q. Sonos have always been said to be top of the line in entry levelmusicstreaming, but boy was i wrong.
    I even bought an Audiolab 6000N Play (What HI-FI Reward 2020) to try and upgrade from the Argon Solo, but I had to return it, the Argon Solo are just THAT much better.

      @@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Thxs for the information. I just ordered the Argon because pricewise it's the cheaper one and I don't need high-end audio for now. It is for now only for spotify. If it is not good enough then I can always send it back and order the Bluesound Node. At my age (65) all the high and low frequencies seem to disapear more or less. :)

    Thanks for the great review Hans. Quick question: what do you mean by 20% or 80% up rating ? With this streamer and Tidal would I be able to enjoy the Tidal improved quality over Spotify ? Or will I be limited by the Google Cast protocol ?

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  2 роки тому

      That depends mainly on your equipment and your hearing.

    • @asmrschloch

      I also have the Solo and Tidal Hifi (CD quality 16 bit, 1411khz). I don't know if it's the different source files or the higher quality, but I can definitely hear an improvement over Spotify using the Chromecast protocol. Wider stereo image and more detailed sound in general, especially in the highs where I am most sensitive in my hearing. But as Hans summed it up already, it really depends on your equipment and your hearing.

    Also as a record producer , the unavailability of old tape masters means many hi Res albums are sourced from old digital masters - they tapes long since decayed, so although they claim to be hi res versions they are resampling of 80’s or 90’s CD’s . For many small artists the label and the master tapes are long gone . And the majors never took great care with tape masters . The Argon Solo has several modes to play music. If you want to play from your NAS, you need to install a DLNA or UPnP AV server program on the NAS. The best for music is MinimServer. That is free and available for Synology and QNAP. Then you need a DLNA or UPnP AV controller app on your smartphone or tablet. I use Glider on iOS which isn't free. But there are many free ones. On that app you select the source - your NAS - and the player - Your Argon Solo. Then you can elect the music you want to play on the app.

    Hi Hans, thank you for this review. I really appreciate the measured tone you use to convey the information. It's a relief after the hysterical clowning that seems to be mandatory for UA-cam presenters.
    I've read that the Solo will only support a maximum resolution of 16bit/44,1kHz over Airplay and Chromecast, with a possible 24bit/192kHz over Roon. Could you tell me what resolution is possible over DLNA, using, for instance, Jriver? Thanks again.

    In conjunction with some high-end DAC's, such as the Holo Audio May, with their galvanic isolation and incredible jitter reduction, does it really matter, as it pertains to sound quality, what streaming device one uses ?
    I feel as though reviewers are avoiding this question or the explanation of why one bit-perfect device might be different from another, sound-wise, when paired as mentioned above, using the streamer's digital output into the optimal DAC input.
    So glad to see you back, and apparently doing well, Hans. I hope you'll update us on your procedure at some point.

      I don't know about other reviewers but I am working for a few years now to dream up an explanation why digital sources sound different. Do you think I would have bought (yes bought) the Auralic Aries G2 streamer if it didn't sound better? Give me another one or two months and I have a video on the subject on line.
      I am indeed feeling fine. I presume you watched my report on the operation (ua-cam.com/video/nYG4t9SHQYA/v-deo.html) but did you also see the update in the description below the video?

    • @cablebrain9691
      @cablebrain9691 2 роки тому

      @@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel No, I am certain that at the time of your purchase you chose the best sonic option. I was speaking more generally, as I can't seem to get a satisfying response from most reviewers. If you can come up with some reasoning for what you believe to be better performance, I would be thrilled (although possibly not my wallet).
      I did indeed see both videos and hope that future "tweaking" will bring you even more relief.
      Keep fighting the good fight, in both of these arenas.
      P.S.- I'm looking to acquire a respectable DAC and streamer in the near future, and my line of questioning is directly applicable to that endeavor. I am currently using an el cheapo DAC and streaming dongle, but have purchased, used, a PS Audio BHK Signature preamp and a BHK Signature 250 stereo amp. My speakers are a pair of the Joseph Audio RM25XL (also bought used).

      The reason I can't give a clear answer on what DAC to buy is that it has to do with personal preferences, development of your auditory system, your gear and so on. Watch ua-cam.com/video/EykkzxUstL4/v-deo.html. You might also watch ua-cam.com/video/MonWnHnWHTc/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/flWAizq4AgI/v-deo.html.The Holo review can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/iAj_0WZT5Eo/v-deo.html

      @@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel I'm sorry if you thought that I was looking for precise buying advice for a DAC, I was not. When I stated that my questioning was directly related to buying a DAC, I only meant that "if" an ultra low jitter and galvanically isolated DAC would negate the need for a hi-end and expensive streamer, it would allow me to save on the purchase of the combination of the two devices, or dedicate more funding toward the DAC.
      The mentioning of my equipment was only to give you a rough idea of where I'm at in my hi-fi acquisition process. Buying equipment, sound unheard, from the intricately woven descriptions of reviewers, is difficult, to say the least.
      I've been interested in stereo equipment reviews for the past 35 years or so, yet rarely taking action. I retired as a senior telecom technician after a 33 year stint, having some knowledge of electronics, though certainly not at the more granular hi-fi audio circuit level. With the closing of most of the high-fidelity shops during more recent years, advice like yours is extremely crucial. So out of necessity and enjoyment, I hang on your every audio-related utterance.

    Very good review, as usual. I had the unit for a couple of days and had to return it, unfortunately. The sound quality is as described here - very good indeed - but it loses connection to Roon all the time. It is "Roon Ready" and works well when it works but sometimes it only shows Airplay 2, sometimes both Roon and Airplay, sometimes nothing. Firmware update did not resolve this. Pity.

      There is the Chromecast protocol and there is the Chromecast hardware. You need hardware to use the protocol. That hardware can be the ChromeCast Audio (no longer in production) or any audio rendered (streamer) that supports the Chromecast Audio protocol.
