    I had the a7riii. The mega pixel was just too much file to deal with. Less than 1% of 1% have their photos on walls or busses. Totally not needed. The high noise is very noticeable too, for me. I want to a7iv for its faster focus, more manageable files and better low light. Seriously guys, we are at the point where these cameras are more than good enough.

    I ended up choosing the A7RIV over the A7IV for a couple of reasons. 1) I don't shoot video often, so the video capability isn't important to me. 2) I shoot wildlife and birds most often, so cropping can be very handy. Also, if you shoot in APS-C mode, you're still shooting with 26 megapixels.

      @@jarrellelee from what I can tell, they look similar. Sony's colors always seem to be on the cooler or on the muted side. You can always change the hue in post production.
      Out of the three manufacturers, I think I like Canon's color reproduction (unmodified out of the camera) the best. I always thought Nikon had a similar color reproduction as Sony.
      Your lenses also play a role in the color reproduction too. Sometimes I'll shoot with adapted old Minolta A Mount lenses to get a certain look to the photos. Honestly, I think this is why I chose Sony's Alpha platform over Nikon or Canon. I had a bunch of old lenses and I didn't want them to go unused.

    I have had the R4 since over 2 years and its a fantastic camera for fine art - composition. It has an in built aps-c camera at 26mp so each lens can have a different field of view. I can put a 300mm lens in a pouch and get extra reach. 8k still animation and for visual lectures easy enlarging whle projectng - given the detail. Huge potential of cropping and recomposing - can get more than I still from the image. I can get more detal from my slr lenses - particularly macro & there also a lot of good 3rd party modern lenses from tamron, sigma and samyang that can give the extra resolution The extra resolution of the EVF is very useful for MF. 10bit video is not a priority for the moment and so I will wait for the a7r5. However the a7iv is an excellent hybrid camera. And it really depends on ones usage.

      while the screen is still 1m dot, the quality of screen is improved, the siii for example is only 1.4m dot, but it's a whole lot more accurate in sunny weather mode (my default screen brightness), hard to show on a video. Of course the 2m dot screens are killer nice, I owned the canon for a while.
      the new codecs are a big winner for me, so much better and with the option to make smaller files with higher quality. biggest downside is that when shooting 10 bit 4:2:0, a super simple to process codec, you have only the option for 24/60, missing 30!!! the A7siii has this issue, and I havent see any youtuber bring it up, but I will when I eventually compare to the Siii. The H265 codecs are amazing otherwise. You will love the options on the A7iv a lot more. On top of all that, a truly fast UI, makes it feel like you bought something new 😆. The Riv can be sluggish at times.

    Great video, informative and fast paced. I like your delivery. I owned the A9 and A7R IV. Then I bought the A1. So I sold the A9 since the A1 is faster and the A9 has the old body. But I really didn't need two Hi-MP cameras. So I bought the A7 IV. It compliments the A1 perfectly. Anything the A7 IV lacks the A1 has it covered and now I have a better camera for ISO noise with the A7 IV that has an articulating screen. I have a 3 year old and shooting low in portrait mode on Sony cameras in the past meant getting on the ground. Honestly that screen was the deal maker for me. I prefer the tilt screen most times but the A7 IV is going to do great for portraits. The A7R IV is still a beast and I'm having a hard time letting it go.

      @@Ethanhunt413 I would get the A74. It has a better menu system and auto focus. It's a better all arounder. It's a great first camera. The A7R4 is outstanding for still subjects and landscapes but you need top level lenses to really see a difference in the details between the cameras. People get hung up on MP counts but that's just 1 part of the whole experience. 33MP is plenty except if you need to do heavy cropping like far away birds for example. 1 bit of advice I'll give you... You date a camera body but you marry a lens. Always buy the best glass you can afford. A $500 camera with a $2000 lens will take better shots then a $2000 camera with a $500 lens. Good luck!

      it's a tough call, and you should consider how big you print and if you need to crop hard (like for wildlife). I know I cant go back after using the newer type systems, the upgrade sort of reminds me of the A7iii vs A7rii way back when, I was convinced I needed the megapixels, but after a taste of the newer A7riii, no way could the Rii stay around for much longer and eventually, I had the Riii + 7iii pairing for a bit. Just one of those things that a much newer gen does to you. if it's strictly action photos, I would discard everything and simply get an A9, and get insanely high keepers, which for me, outweighs pixel level sharpness.... one of the few cameras that I would get again, if only I didnt have a youtube channel

      I have the R4 and I would go with the A74 if I were you. As he mentions in the video, the focus is better, it has the same autofocus as the Sony A1 (Sony's flagship). The R4 is great for cropping but it comes with downsides such as massive files that might be hard for your computer to process. Cropping also takes time. I'm probably going to buy A74 and sell my R4. I don't shoot that much videos with my R4 because it's not that great (image stabilization is better with my phone), but now with all the new technologies in the A74, I think it will be much better.

      definitely the A7iv or even the A9…. because 60mp is extremely taxing and as soon as you leave base, the noise really starts to eat away your true resolution, and this sort of depends how much of a monster PC you have now (A7r4 and A1 were unbearable for most stuff outside of landscapes). A9 is in a different league for sports, A7iv is by far the most pleasant to use camera, amazing to work with. if you do a ton of sports, seriously look at the A9, incidental, get the A7iv, the usability factor of the A7iv is arguably the best out there, the customization is beyond anything Sony currently offers. The extra wheel makes a big difference, and operationally so fast and easy.

    Hi great video, loads of info and many good conclusions. So just subscribed. My new a7iv is on pre-order because I felt getting one without placing an order pdq might mean waiting until mid 2022 given the overall range of improvements and world supply chain challenges right now. Not to mention prior sales pattern 3+ years back with Sony's breakthrough camera/body the a7iii.
    I came to Sony via their APS-C a6500, as a compact alternative to my extensive Nikon kit. Saw the a7iii hype nearly 4 years ago and waiting in anticipation of Nikon's Z response. Underwhelmed by original Z6/7 models and limited lens readmap, I bought a Sony a7Riii. Starting selling most of my N kit. Added an a9 and a7Riv plus many native Sony optics.
    Not all perfect, pretty good but some frustration too. Sold on a6500, then a7Riii for a7Riv. Good but by no means amazing. Better ergonomics and a few other points but what a pain dealing with 61Mb files!! Needed a major PC upgrade and masses more HD storage. Sold my a7Riv thinking about buying an a1, but need at least two bodies, saw a7iv offering many great features so ordered within 48 hours of launch.
    That's atypical for me, I'm not usually an early adopter and I don't like having to pay top dollar to be amongst the first to benefit. I usually prefer to wait for a discount, but thought that unlikely much before mid to end 2022. So for me I suspect trading my a7Riv for a nominally more basic a7iv might well prove a better move. I may yet pair it with an a1, if/when I trade up my a9 (never saw much point in a9ii).

Had a a7ii while back and loved it (long story) but am in process of selling off my entire Canon kit go back to Sony. Will have for vaca - portraits - and some birding/animals with like a 300mm lens. I don't know if I will get good sharp results from the 61mp in that last scenario? Thanks!

      I have A1, Sony A7R IV-A, A9 II and A7 IV. I do mostly pictures stills. I would rate
      1) A1 - the best.
      2) A9 II
      3) A7r IV-A
      4) A IV
      Why? depends how you use? A1 is all in one. A9 II you will never miss the shot, over 95% all super sharp full focus pictures. A7R IV-A is so so good for landscape, magazine, weddings. NO AA filter is big time quality difference. A IV is ok, not too bad.

      the A7iv is rated a full stop lower AF sensitivity, same as the A7siii, and you can really feel it ISO 6400 levels. The A9 is also significantly better even if rated the same as the A7iii? I’ll be reviewing the A1 soon but prioritizing the tamron 35-150 because it’s so hot right now.

      thanks, I also started with canon 16 or 17 odd years ago, time flies. I would get the A7iv for a few reasons. 60+mp files are massive. the UI change is a big one, remember the AF change in the 5D2->5D3? sort of like that in terms of sony menus and operations. Once you touched the 5D3 it was near impossible to go back to 5D2 right? The R4 firmware is sort of like a refreshed 4x of the R series. The A7iv is something new, built from ground up. A lot of small changes add up to a major revision, and the ui is completely new. The A7's revolutionized eye AF, but there's more to a camera than a really neat feature.

    Great video. I have the 7R4 and was struggling with softer photos compared to my A6400 to the point that I thought there is something wrong with the camera which the service center checked out wasn't so. Finally sat down and worked through the physics which made sense. 3 times the pixels in the same space compared to a 20-24mp FF can only mean smaller pixels. Smaller pixels can only mean less light falling on it and that should explain the higher noise. Less light also mean the AF will suffer. On softer images, I would attribute it to neighbouring pixels picking up the image due to the small movements. Unlike larger pixels which wouldn't matter as the movement is still kept within the same pixel.

    the math on the printing size was harsh, yes, you don't have the double in width, since if you had the double width, you'd have a image size of 4 times more (keeping the same aspect ration)
    Yes, you can print almost 2 times, in AREA, not in width.

    • @CharlieVN
      @CharlieVN  2 роки тому

      the print topic can get sticky, hard to gauge what is acceptable. I did a large print for someone a while back before high resolution existed, a whopping 46” and they were happy as can be. I knew in my heart that there are levels of personal satisfaction that do not align. on the flip side, there must be a way to cheat the system. if you ever see a work done by Peter lik, it is shocking. 100” print pin sharp to the very last detail. I’m not sure how it’s even possible, you can walk up to these exhibits with a magnifying glass……. something I used to strive for….. and tossed in the towel.

    I have the 7R iv and i am disappointed because of the bad low light performance. i do have a f/2.8 zoom lense, so that shouldn't be the issue. It produces a lot of noise with low light, compared to for example Canon EOS 6D Mark II

    • @CharlieVN
      @CharlieVN  2 роки тому +2

      well, it's 60mp, and at the pixel level, it would look horrible, however if you downsample to 20mp, it should outperform the 6D ii or any earlier generation canon. You're never going to get an ultra clean image at the pixel level because a magnified view will show less of the sensor being used, you can check it out here: www.dpreview.com/reviews/image-comparison/fullscreen?attr18=lowlight&attr13_0=nikon_z9&attr13_1=nikon_z7ii&attr13_2=sony_a7riv&attr13_3=canon_eos6dmkii&attr15_0=raw&attr15_1=raw&attr15_2=raw&attr15_3=raw&attr16_0=12800&attr16_1=12800&attr16_2=12800&attr16_3=12800&attr126_0=1&attr126_1=1&attr126_2=1&attr126_3=1&normalization=compare&widget=845&x=-0.01835905&y=0.280064374 . You need a bigger sensor if you want ultra good high ISO, 35mm has been nearing its limit for some time now. Take note that the color preservation at high ISO's is probably a bigger factor than pure noise.
