One tip about spraying the lacquer into a bottle- Don't put the cover on the bottle right away. Give the propellant a while to dissipate, or else you can have a nasty surprise when you open the bottle. Don't ask me how I know.
To remove bur- 0000 fine steel wool + naphtha/lighter fluid (to pick up some of the brass dust). Be careful not to scratch lacquer on outer bur. Do you put oil in your files when leveling? You the man Stohrer!
Great idea, lacquer.. I’ve been using fine crocus cloth on my tone holes. Especially on sticky pads.(G#). It seems crud builds up around the tone hole over time.
Hi Matt, it feels hard to track the amount of lacquer on the qtip/amount that’s going onto the tone hole when executing this. How many tone holes do you usually lacquer before you re-dunk the qtip?
Thank you for all the great videos!! Could you talk about the time you spend on an overhaul and the costs? I find it extremely difficult to ask the right amount as I also spend between 20 to 30 hours on an overhaul to get everything as perfect as it can be. I’m always asking less then i should to not scare my clients…
Also, I charge hourly. Flat rate was killing me. I give a ballpark estimate, call along the way if anything pops up to change that and involve the customer in the decision making process, and then provide a total at the end. I still have a hard time charging what it actually costs but I'm better at it than I used to be!
@@westyorkshirewoodwind96 Is shipping from the USA not possible? A few cans will last you a long time even if you are also spraying your pads like I do.
Hi Matt. Most places like votaw say they don’t ship to the uk but will keep on the lookout. Played a BA you had overhauled the other day and it was awesome. Really inspiring work man. Thanks. T
Thank you Matt you are very gracious and generous with your knowledge.

Something simple but very useful. Thanks for this good tip
will do this from now in! Thanks so much for the tip.
Thanks for the tip!
Is it okay to use that lacquer on a scratch on the bell?
Depends! It should only be put down on a completely clean surface that is free of corrosion, and the color might not match.

If anything, I find myself getting slower nowadays on the padwork part.

@@StohrerMusic Thanks for your reply Matt! It's a relief to hear that you also find this to be a challenge :) All the best!
Would you do something similar if the horn was silver plated?
The options would be:
- don't level
- level but don't lacquer
- level and lacquer
- level and spot plate to match
0000 steel
Wool is also great for cleaning glass. I use it to clean my auto windshield
Damn: that's nice engraving
HI Matt. What lacquer do you use for this? Also would it be the same lacquer if you wanted to re-lacquer a key for example? Thanks. T
I use the Nikolas spray lacquer.
@@StohrerMusic thanks matt. Struggling to find a decent alternative available in the uk.
