Did they not meet or see ANY mute person in real life?????

The ending honestly just reaks of deep bitterness, like Faris had already been so deep in the slump that he thought that nobody could pull him out of it and in turn giving off the message that no matter what you try, you cant change something or someone for the better, where he eventually lost all his passion and just ended up making soulless cash grabs. The game as a whole just feels like a geniune unanswered cry for help which was burried deep under bad jokes and trying to be edgy

That's kinda what I thought. Which is not to say give this game a pass - it does look pretty terrible and is incredibly insensitive. All "art" is subject to criticism, and it's good that we have analyses like this one that point out the many, many flaws. But I also feel like I see a lot of people who have the opinion that to make a game with this subject matter is wrong - and frankly, there is no such thing as wrong when it comes to creative works. There's bad, and there's stuff that doesn't work, but the act of creating it is not wrong. If we start making that particular judgement - that some things just shouldn't be made, period - it's going to make the whole creative community turn into a bland wasteland.
tl;dr: the game is terrible, and people are right to point out how terrible it is, but we can't police what people are allowed to make.

While I don’t disagree, I kind of like that the ending doesn’t really change, because ultimately you can’t control what other people do. And I think the video game trope of “say the right thing, get the good ending” can leave people feeling like there’s always a way to help someone else, if you just try hard enough to say or do the right thing, and honestly that just isn’t always true. If the game had been more cohesive and less flippant with the subject matter I feel like it could have had a lot more impact.

    • @DustD.Reaper

@@sabresister you would be surprised how much impact a single person can have on someone else, both in a positive or negative way. While just being friends with someone wont magically solve all their problems, just being there for someone and listening to their problems so they know they arent alone even when the whole world seems against them can make a giant difference and could stop from taking drastic actions. The world can be a really cruel place at times, and just being a light a for someone in a dark place could be enough to prevent a tragedy.

@@sabresister - I agree with your point in a vacuum and think that it’s a fun concept. While I think you underestimate how much impact one person can have, it’s true that some people aren’t willing or available to be changed, and it’s true that you cannot fix every problem. But I do also think it was executed extremely poorly due to the cynicism Faris put into the game-you get the same ending no matter what you do and how much effort is put in in a really unsatisfying way. Your “good” actions yield the same result as a player who actively went out of their way to bully Chris, which feels so underwhelming. It feels at times as though the game is punishing you for trying at all, which is not a feeling you want a game to have.
I could see the “your actions didn’t change the ultimate outcome” ending working, but I think it would be difficult to balance it to be satisfying narratively and not frustrating to the player. I think this would be hard to get right, but maybe it could have commented on how in the “friendship” route you weren’t even actually a good friend to Chris as you did nothing about the bullying and watched it happen. Maybe the protagonist even realizes what a shitty friend they’ve been and apologizes to him-not really changing the ending that much, but giving the viewer a potentially emotional moment so that they feel like they got _something_ out of the experience. Or maybe, in light of you realizing that Chris isn’t a very good friend either and never intended to spare the school, you take matters into your own hands. The game can have a bad or sad ending, but it needs to feel like the player’s choices mattered even if they couldn’t fix things.
This is all just speculation, though. Not a dev so I can’t really say what the best route would have been lol

IMO what would have been way more interesting and meaningful (if harder to implement) is if the ending was different, but it *wasn't* contingent on whether you befriend him or not. Like if you try to befriend him to prevent a shooting, he quickly realizes how hollow that is, but if you go out of your way to spend time and include him, he doesn't. Or - you don't befriend him but something you do or say causes him to join a club or something that gives him community and meaning, or causes him to get professional help for his issues. Also, what I'd do is keep that "I'll shoot the place up if I don't make a friend in five days", but make it apparent later that was just a really inappropriate, socially awkward attempt at a "joke". That is something I can believe a lonely awkward teen doing.
I know this is just me idea-guying but there were ways to tackle this tastefully, even keeping the opening hook as it is.

Like you said, I think this game should've just been a weird indie game with random humor than have it center around preventing a school shooter, or be respectful. Sure, it may not get people's attention as quickly, but long term respect is important, along with just thinking through what you make. If Faris wanted a random humor game, Chris could have just threatened MC with something ridiculous, like dropping a moon in 5 days. If Faris wanted a serious story, it could be about a kid who gets a premonition of the tragedy and decides to help Chris, feeling guilty about not helping someone until it's too late, and the question of if people helping for their own goals is really helping.

As someone who has psychogenic mutism (I can't speak in public, but can talk in circumstances where I feel comfortable), it's almost comical how the game implies that being unable to speak means you have literally NO other means of communication.
I regularly write notes and use sign language to communicate, and I have almost no difficulty getting messages across to people, without having to say a single word.
I'm sure Faris wanted to add 'tension' to the game by making it so you can't actually communicate your thoughts with others, but this was a pretty bizarre way to do it in my opinion, like he's never actually met a mute or deaf person in his life.

When I first heard about this game, I wasn't sure if I should judge it harshly as I hadn't seen the game play. I considered maybe it was just a mentally ill near adult trying to cope with his mental health in a poor way. Now not only seeing the game but your in depth video it makes me feel sad as I think at one point he really did care and have a passion for making games but clearly he just fell down a hole of greed, it's a true shame.

thank you for clarifying this game! its not good, not in the slightest, but it really shows how much Faris (and also Guepo) changed as a person after the attempts of doing hit games, and then succeeding with GoB. doing games are not easy, this is common sense, everything who has passion and thought behind it is hard to make. but doing something this risky requires attention and seriousness, which it didnt have... they wont learn from this as in recent events, but we still hope for the best

I am so pissed at how good this could have been. The visuals of the game are facinating, even if some of the glitch effects are hard on the eyes, the pixel art is smooth even if character designs are simple. The animation and music choice is lovely. If you break this down into components and only saw the visuals; Smooth pixel art with a little bit of an esoteric/I can't think of the word right now, but the sort of horror artstyle of the way the houses are? Visually, this game is wonderful
And I am so pissed the visuals are wasted on this.
I am of the belief that even when handling serious topics, humor can be included to some extent. But not to loudly have someone yell 'my ass itches'. Like, the teacher going 'blah blah blah' when you first meet Chris is subtle but funny! Making the player mute can also be interesting if the game gave you opportunities to try and communicate. Is your player mute because of a disability or because of trauma? Why do they not even try to communicate in sign language? Hell having a mute character in a school setting would be an awesome way to incorporate passing notes in class as a way to communicate and would make so much more sense that the teacher gets upset with you.
Even some of the attempts at humor, such as the nonsense sounds the teacher makes when saying what the class project is? I can even explain that as the character tuning the teacher out. That's... distasteful sure, but it could be worse!
Hell i have 0 issue with weird things like the corpse at the beginning just being there. Sometimes shit happens and thats fine. Whatever, it's a game it doesn't have to be 100% real all the time. But I am so so so upset that this talent was wasted not talking to someone about actual writing, about handling this topic with tact. About not having a chance to win despite it promising you that. And you don't even have to win every time. But don't pretend like we have a choice.
Take your emotions and make them into art. The best kind of art comes from emotions.... but for the sake of you and your audience and for your mental health... never take personal games like this... and make it seem like there's no good to come out of it...
The Beginners Guide comes to mind, a game made from emotion that doesn't have a happy ending.... but it has a hopeful one. It's only self destructive to take your emotions and frame them as hopeless.
Anyway... good content, came here from the crooked man video, binging your whole channel now. I like your content and your voice is lovely to listen to. I hope you stick around a while.

I mean, look at a game like Disco Elysium. It covers some pretty heavy topics, particularly things drug addiction. It's also a game that utilizes a lot of humor - the literal first playable scene in the game, you can die to a tie on a ceiling fan, and just shortly after that you can make your character run away from the bartender telling him to pay his bills, and your character will flip off the bartender and likely almost crash into an elderly woman.
The important thing with humor when discussing dark subject matter is how it's being used. Obviously, it can work by helping to provide commentary on the subject, but it can also be a good way to break tension. It's incredibly easy to get fatigued by a story that only shows bad things happening, so humor can provide a way to not only entertain the player but also to give them a break from the more miserable parts of the story, like a safe room in a horror game that gives you a break from whatever horrific monsters are out there.
There's also intentional juxtaposition, although in those situations you usually introduce the lighthearted, funny moments first, so when the underlying story is revealed it's more shocking. Think of the scene in Mulan where the guys are all cheerfully singing about girls or whatever, only for it to be cut short by the shot of the ransacked village. That moment has a lot more emotional weight because it comes immediately after a very happy scene. You were lead into a false sense of security only for it to be suddenly ripped away, leaving you with just as much shock and horror as the character's feel.
TLDR, humor can absolutely be used when discussing dark subject matter. It can provide commentary, help to keep player's engaged and prevent mental fatigue, control pacing, or to give more impact to a following serious scene. Introvert does not do this - the humor is just there because "lol random" and because other media used dark humor without actually understanding why the decision to include humor was made.

At 14:48 I really do feel like this is just a part of him at the time of making this wanting to release a lot of painful thoughts. The problem that needs to be solved isn't forcing friends on people, or those weird assembly group things where they force us to 'make friends'. It's mental health. It's access to guns. It's making sure the individual gets the help they need, NONE of which is the responsibility of their classmates. You cannot blame the classmates for not "being nice" to the shooter. You cannot blame the victims who had done nothing to deserve this. Maybe I'm looking too deeply, or having more hope for the games message than I should be. But that was what I got from the ending presented.

It's obvious that, while his efforts were misplaced, he was just trying to make a game to comfort people in a dark mental state like himself, by making a game that he thought would help comfort HIM. Don't get me wrong, he did it awfully, but I can see why that is. It kind of reminds me of Sonichu in a way, similar to how it was a testament to Chris Chan's own constant power trip.

I think the idea that the school shooting couldn't actually be stopped could have worked, but obviously it wasn't handled correctly. None of this was. If this concept was handled better, it could be about... ok see this is really complicated and nuanced. *Not* that some people are inherently evil, your actions don't matter, or anything awful like that. But that sometimes you can't do anything, sometimes you can't fix someone. Sometimes it's not your responsibility, or your fault. Sometimes it was already too late, sometimes the help they need isn't something you could provide. And maybe you made an impact, but it just wasn't enough. But your efforts still mean something, your kindness still means something. Just remember kindness to yourself, too
Although I think this lesson would be better told not by a school shooting story, but by a story about abuse. Because that's what I'm really thinking about. That's how I learned this lesson, multiple times over. Because I've tried to fix my abusers so many times and I know how that goes. It doesn't go well. That being said, I've met people who've done messed up things in the past, and have genuinely grown past it, too. And that's why it's important to balance giving people a chance and keeping yourself safe

Fair warning, this is going to be a long comment.
This somewhat reminds me of the game someone made called “V-Tech rampage” where you play as the shooter, Seung-Hui Cho, and have to go around killing people. Obviously this is a little different as it seems that this game is genuinely trying to come from a good place (even though it absolutely missed the mark with that) while rampage was just mocking a horrible tragedy made by a completely indifferent developer (he defends it by saying it’s free speech). I go to Virginia Tech where one of the biggest mass shooting occured on April 16, 2007 and what “V-tech rampage” was “inspired” by and practically recreated. The Remembrance Day for the 32 people lost is actually today as I’m writing this. It has greatly affected the school and it’s community. I know people who have been directly affected by the shooting despite it being 16 years after it happened. Those people lost their siblings and friends. The entire community comes together to remember those precious lives lost that day. There’s a candlelight vigil, a wreath laying at the memorial with a moment of silence and a 5k (3.2 for the 32) with 32 seconds of silence before it. Normally with moments of silence there will be some people whispering (at least in my experiences) however once those signs went up and people said shh, you could hear a pin drop. If that doesn’t go to show how much this affects people and how serious of a topic it is, I don’t know what will.
If you can’t really grasp the concept of how many victims and precious lives died that day, here are the names of all the victims which really makes you realize how many 32 lives actually is: Nicole White, Maxine Turner, Leslie Sherman, Waleed Mohamed Shaalan, Reema Samaha, Mary Karen Read, Julia Pryde, Michael Pohle Jr., Erin Nichole Peterson, Daniel Perez Cueva, Minal Panchal, Juan Ortiz, Daniel O'Neil, Lauren McCain, Partahi Lumbantoruan, G. V. Loganathan, Liviu Librescu, Henry Lee, Matthew La Porte, Jarrett Lane, Emily Hilscher, Rachael Elizabeth Hill, Jeremy Herbstritt, Caitlin Hammaren, Matthew Gwaltney, Kevin Granata, Jocelyne Couture-Nowak, and Austin Cloyd. These people were professors, students, parents, and friends to others and their lives were wrongly taken from them. One of them, Liviu Librescu, was a professor who was also a holocaust survivor (the shooting happened on the same day as the holocaust remembrance but was not specifically a hate crime as the shooter targeted anyone and everyone).
If you are going to make a game about a school shooting, you have to be sensitive as this is an incredibly real topic that is traumatic and changes people’s lives. I don’t know if “V-Tech rampage” is still up but I remember the creator also saying he’ll take it down if people pay enough for him to. I’m pretty sure he at least didn’t get any money.
Sorry again, I know this is a long comment but as someone who not only has younger siblings in elementary-highschool who worries about them but also as someone who goes to VT where the massive shooting happened, this is a serious topic that I’m personally very passionate about. Just please, if you are really thinking about making a game about school shootings be sensitive. These are real people’s lives; there are parents, siblings, friends who have lost someone that they will never get back all because of a horrible monster of a person with a gun and no regard for human lives.
This a great video that handles this topic well and the severity of it. Thank you and keep making great videos like this :)

You seem like such a thoughtful and deep person. Honestly, a game like this seems more like a waste of your personal talents. You're quite good at editing and structuring your commentary and putting your thoughts out in a critical, but still respectful and positive way.
Also, I'm not insulting the game. It's obvious the intentions were good. It simply wasn't handled in the right way. Hell, even then, a game probably isn't the best medium for subjects like this. But I respect his attempt, as bad or insensitive as it may have come off.
(Also I subscribed, I need more thought-provoking commentary in my life and you definitely deserve more than what you have with this kind of effort)

I think it might be an issue of framing. A little bit back this year a kid at my school ceased their own life (didn't know the fella, nothing I could've done).
I could make some raw, brutal art on my thoughts about the seemingly ubiquitous teenager desire to not live, and how repulsive it is that the news felt so expected, effectively normal to hear. Or I could try and make something more composed, something that touches on my feelings but ultimately has a message and themes and some sort of resolution or advice.
I think this is an scenario of making some wacky, brutal raw art in a dark place and it failing to meet a standard it probably shouldn't be held to.
Also note: it's fine to have humor in a game that deals with terrible stuff. Whether it's to help you get through it or to make it even more impactful, you can do that. The actual terrible tragedies should utterly shatter any comedic tones, but you can have art that deals with heavy stuff, while also having humor in it and I personally find adding some lighter elements to be a great move. Got to have some contrast at least.

the thing with this game is that i noticed how similar the humour is with some of my own classmates. It's the "I'm not required to be mature enough for my age" mentality many of these people have because they've been spoiled all their life. They will eventually learn that some topics have a certain approach you need to follow, or else you will fail in your career.
These people really need a wake up call (like this video) to realise that the world doesn't share the same humor as them.

Goddamn this game depicts ableism really weirdly. First we get the fetishizing of the disability, then we get Emma treating the protag as if he's incapable of communication/emotional expression at all...? Just rubs me the wrong way to begin with. The messages and execution were already bad enough, but by slapping that in there and not really doing anything with it, I'm really unsure if there was some kinda message supposed to be said there, or if the dev genuinely believes some of these things/just wanted an excuse to get around plot points like saying anything when mute people definitely have methods of communication? It just doesn't make any sense to me at all.

reminds me of that one indie game, kindergarten. it’s doing the whole multiple endings thing along with random humor but it’s actually trying to actually spread awareness on serious stuff and just fumbles. i like the idea of having every ending being the bad ending while saying that there’s a good ending (honestly that would be a really good twist in a horror game) but using a topic like school shootings for it really just shows how bad the whole serious part is.

    My initial thoughts went from:
“Ok, this game could be kinda icky, but I’ll keep an open mind!”
    to,
“Wow…half of this game doesn’t make any sense, let alone it’s poor handling of such a heavy topic!”
    To,
“Uhh….what is this even meant to be!?”
But, after seeing that “secret” at the end, with the message from the dev, I can’t help but feel sorry for Faris.
That doesn’t excuse the ickyness of the game, but I think I can understand how Faris might’ve been feeling! I’m sad he felt that he had to go into the mascot horror sub genre and possibly abandon his passion projects just because he had to make money!
Regardless of what anyone thinks of Garten of Ban Ban, or mascot horror as a whole, I hope Faris and the euphoric brothers can eventually find their voice, and whatever happens with them in the future, I wish them nothing but the best!💖💖💖

on the one hand, faris was young, and probably struggling with mental illness and other issues. those two factors can really warp your perception of the world, of serious topics, etc. but then, on the other hand... i'm young (17). i'm mentally ill. i would have the sense not to do something like this.
additionally, with no intention to defend the game, i _do_ understand why he made it. some people have pointed out it was likely a cry for help, and honestly i've done similar shit before, but the stuff i was doing was writing vague poetry and showing my friends to try and communicate something i was too afraid to say outright. what faris did was make a game that poorly handled its subject matter, and while artistically inspired it was grossly offensive. i understand why, but he should've known better.
i don't think people would be quite as mad if he could demonstrate he's matured in the past couple of years, but his and guepo's twitter account is really doing them no favours. i do hope they both eventually learn from all of this, because this game (while not good) shows a lot of potential for what they could make in the future, if only they'd put in the effort.

aside from the glaring main problem here, I'm just appalled and frankly disgusted by the constant sheer ableism displayed here. I was born with a disability and although it isn't related to the D/HoH/Mute/NV community, my disability has brought me into a lot of spaces for disabled people where I've met others who were mute or nonverbal. This is so insulting on so many levels. The constant and repeated lack of agency for the PC, the constant verbal humiliation and slurs, the constant ignoring of the very real and very diverse ways people can communicate without speaking... this is just gross, on so many level. I'm unfortunately very aware of how deeply ingrained into society ableism is and I suffer from it every day, but this is just unbelievable. This is one of the reasons I'm a consultant for disability representation and accessibility features/options for game studios and devs. This is a very real example of what happens when no one with a disability was consulted in the making of a story with a disabled character in it. Appalling.

People who have a lot going on upstairs and dont know how to talk about it so they make self depreciating jokes. Or people who have a hard time comforting people so they make jokes. It feels like the creator had good intentions but didnt know how to go about it so they cracked a joke.
