      Alec Steele ever thought of doing a Mokume Gane tracker knife?

      Jay Katz mokume would be to soft for a knife blade.

      Dylan Tanner good to know. What about a tracker knife in general? Challenging shape?

    • @CrashingCarbide

      Jay Katz not particularly. I wouldn’t try a compound grind on your first knife, but it’s shouldn’t be any problem after you acquire some experience. The jimping and other features can easily be milled or filed.

    I use stones quite a bit when finishing molds (I design and build molds for blow molding and injection molding. Stones will not take as much metal as sand paper but the also will not flex around a sharp edge and dull it like sand paper does. I also can shape the stones with a grinder or belt sander to fit small or weirdly shaped areas. They are not the fastest metal removers but they have their place. We leave them in a bath of lubricant so they are soaked through. That helps them to cut better and break away as they clog to expose more cutting edges.

    • @wingracer1614
      @wingracer1614 4 роки тому +4

      Yep, stones like that are ideal in the right circumstance. Bulk removal of an edge bevel is not it. Working two surfaces so that they come together perfectly is a better use. Like sear engagement surfaces in a firearm trigger.

    • @ricomock2
      @ricomock2 4 роки тому +2

      For those not well versed in using stones as a cutting tool, it is important that your stone does break down (assuming you'renot using diamond or CBN). Stones are a self sharpening tool, they do that by shedding the grits that have dulled and exposing new grit. If you stone isn't breaking down, you can encounter issues with the surface glazing over or material becoming loaded up onto your stone, both of which will exponentially increase issues with the stone not cutting properly.

      There are hundreds of types it seems like but the main kinds are ceramic and aluminum oxide. Trizact belts are popular too. Ceramic is good for metal because it last long and cuts into metal well it’s also expensive. Aluminum oxide is good for wood because it’s cheap and less durable. Trizact belts are great for nice clean finishes. They are finishing belts. They are the most expensive I think

    • @paridegnesotto8466
      @paridegnesotto8466 4 роки тому +1

    • @dpround
      @dpround 4 роки тому +3

      @@paridegnesotto8466 Ceramics cut quick and cool, which is really nice on steel, but forge scale seems to spoil them and they are not much good on wood in my limited experience. Aluminium oxide are cheap (relatively), robust and work on a wide variety of materials, but slower cutting and make the work hot much faster.

      Alcohol and Peroxide are too aggressive - will damage the tissue and significantly slow down healing. I've never had a cut get badly infected by just clean tap water and maybe some savlon (antiseptic, not an antibiotic - I'm in the UK, so antibiotic creams are not widely avaliable over the counter w/o prescription). I'm pretty strongly against overuse of antibiotics due to the dangers of antibiotic resistance, and using them for a minor cut seems totally pointless in my experience.

      If you don't wear gloves when grinding or using a wire wheel, you can get some ugly looking painful cuts, but they are minor. If you are wearing cut resistant gloves, they can get caught in the grinder. The injuries that result are way worse. Sprains, broken bones, and (NSFW/NSFL) degloving injuries. Degloving is an injury where the skin gets caught, tears, and is removed forcibly.

      Z Nation actually. Since it was cut up and infected. The main "antagonist" through the show is named The Murphy because he's the only one who has been bitten but hasn't changed. Thought since he's a zombie nerd that would be funny. But I think you're on target for likelihood lol

    Have you tried using a file with chalk applied to the teeth to get the surface finish. We used this method in our apprenticeship when learning draw filing. We made a tool makers clamp from two bars of mild steel and through a combination of filing and scraping by hand (using a surface plate and transfer blue to mark the high spots 👍) we had to get it flat enough that the bars would create a vacuum and hold together.

    Those stones are very good for highly detailed and hard material. I am a machinist and we use them to sharpen carbide tools. May not be great for removing material but for more fine work its great.

    Alec the thing on the side of your finger is a verruca, it'd be best to go to a pharmacy and they'll give you a cream or a freezing tool to get rid of it. They are also mildly contagious by contact so you may find that more will grow on other fingers. So the longer you have it the longer it'll take to get rid of.
