  • This programme follows the award-winning trilogy whose theme was the miraculous resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. The original trilogy examined London, Berlin and Leningrad, and showed how their people coped with the ravages of World War II. This one-off studies Paris and the effects that the war had on the French nation.

    This is one of the most important documents about 1940-1945 France. It shows the very worst of France and French complicity and the best of France ( in context) in survival and is much better than the Chagrin et le piitie and other such documents. As a English citizen who has lived in France for 15 years (and because my father was in WW2 and made me come for all my holidays to France in1960's) i feel entitled to say this is the best documentary i have seen in searching for the truth about the French. The fact is- they are not right or wrong but just human.

      @Gayle Elizabeth I'm sorry to inform you he is right. Those countries don't know what occupation is like and it's easy to be a couch hero from the in front of a computer with the safety of time, distance and hindsight. The US always fought a weakened Germany, when the best of its army had been ground down by others for years already. And France - as all countries managing to last centuries - always had a backbone, at least enough to not follow Bush blindly in 2003, only 16 years ago.
      I don't pretent I would have fared better than these people did had I lived throught that. I can just hope I would have. Hopefully, I will never have to find out.

    They had it pretty good under the occupation. The French had access to butter, fatty meats, wine, real coffee, real tobacco etc. - goods not available to the German population since the trade embargo was put in place in 1939.
    Compare that to the realities of living under Soviet occupation - way up to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, its satellite states were drained of food stuff by "mother Russia", the facto leader of the Union.

    • @loiba
      @loiba 6 років тому +6

      False, the French did not have access to real coffee they made coffee out of chicory. By the end of the war, French people were starving in cities due to the lack of availability of butter and small quantities of meat. Rationing continued in France after the war as well. Wine is normal because France is a wine producing country but large amounts of wine were stolen and shipped to Germany. In fact France was the biggest agricultural producer of food diverted to the German war effort.
