This mans talent for presenting info far exceeds his production quality. Really, an excellent personality. EDIT: Just to be clear, no shade was intended from this comment. Just saying that shooting a talking head is relatively cheap endeavor. And for someone who likely edits his own videos, it is excellent work.
@@rmcminiking yeah I mean like, what kind of bells and whistles are we missing from a vid like this? I know the top comment here wasn't trying to throw shade, but Dev's production value is exactly what I'd expect and hope for.
Keep in mind that Dev does everything, script, recording, editing, fx, banger intro music ... on top of actually playing and understanding the game. Of course things could be more flashy or whatever, but the "buddy sitting on a couch" is his trademark at this point, and people seem to like it.
I'm just getting into Magic at age 50 thanks to the D&D release. Your videos are fantastic and are helping me get excited about playing. If only I could learn all that MTG lingo.... Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Dev don't cut those long bits! Your personality is what we come to the channel for, there's a reason I listen to you tell me about the cards Instead of going through them myself, gotta get that SBMTGDADDY
I've been playing some Arena while watching this, and in back-to-back matches, I got Dragon Turtle as a reward just as you were talking about it, then Forsworn Paladin just as you were talking about it.
Love your stuff man. Always so chill and positive and funny. Smart, insightful and funny as always. Dude you’re a GOD with indestructible and Vigilance
I'm surprised you didn't mention tend the pests with skeletal swarming. Sac a relatively healthy skeleton during or after combat to make a bunch of pests, and suddenly you didn't leave yourself wide open.
Unless you're playing a Skeleton tribal deck, you likely won't have many Skeletons from Swarming alone. Because at most you'll have 2 2/1s as they attack the first time and they can be taken out by literally any blockers. And that'll just repeat over and over. So the healthiest Skeleton you'll be seeing is a 2/1, giving you 2 pests. You'll need s way to make them unblockable to get more than 2 Skeletons (to get higher power) at a time, which at that point is a 3-card combo for not much reward (a handful of 1/1s from Tend) - at that point the unblockable Skeletons are good enough on their own, too.
Thanks for another excellent installment. I'm at the end of the hardest week of my life so far and its really nice to not have to sift through all these cards blind. Keep up the good work.
Important thing about the mimic. It is a treasure. So, when it taps for mana, and the mana is used for certain spells, the "if mana from a treasure was paid" clause is activated.
Also really looking forward to brewing with Orcus, that big, adorable, demonic not-a-whale. (As well as Kalain.) Ah, how I want Rakdos, Jund, or Grixis to be good in standard. I'd also note, Skullport Merchant is a dwarf, so they tap for treasures with Magda. Could be something there? (My jank brain def wants to Goldspan into Star Mount and sack a ton of treasure to dome someone for 20.)
Evyn The Magic Nerd made a video four days ago, and he called Tomb of Annihilation and Orcus! You're not the only UA-camr talking about this, though you are the only UA-camr with massive clout :D
I'm using Orcus in historic as a masterminds acquisition target. Fun fact lurres decks can fetch permenants from the sideboard that have higher cmc then the companion rule allows.
I find it funny that "they" think this set (or even Strixhaven) would not be a big impact on Standard. Hmm... after Oko, Omnath, Uro, Eldraine (soon to rotate, yea!) etc., everyone screamed about the power creep being a power climb. These last few sets seem to have some fun and interesting cards without huge power gains. Isn't that what we want? Your lists are always the best, and I trust your preview season videos the most. Thanks!
I'm of the opinion that Skeletal Swarming pairs really well with Ebondeath... I will always be able to get him back as long as Skeletal Swarming is out.
Treasure is important in the new set, you can splash a third color without supporting lands as well as being a great ramp vehicle. For this reason I think the Hoarding Ogre is a sweet cards because it can get often two treasures each attack. I think the set will do well after rotation (even though many creatures already have 3 toughness in the set, or even 4)
Teleportation circle I think is a sleeper. All of the etb triggers you could pull off like elite spellbinder or portable hole just wipes your opponents tokens
Orcus seems pretty freakin good, it's definitely flexible enough for mid-range decks that might be able to capitalize on either ability to go more control or more aggro. I'm really interested to see what it can do in a Grixis big spells/treasure deck.
Adult Gold Dragon, if nothing else, is going to be great in cube. Dropping that guy t4 off of an Ancient Tomb or t3 off of a Mana Crypt/Sol Ring is a huge game, and the lifeline can help to stabilize your life total against the downsides of those cards.
Re: Blackstaff & Talisman: You can animate one talisman and equip it with the other. This will then create a token copy of the talisman. However, because you have to sacrifice the equipment talisman to do it, the end result is one animated talisman, now unequipped, one token copy of a talisman, and the sacrificed talisman in your graveyard. Maybe this is helpful if you do graveyard tricks, but in a vacuum, this is technically actually a worse position than you had before (as the token you made cannot now be animated by Blackstaff). So basically, this is not a combo.
Token copies will copy the card as written. If you clone an activated Treetop Village is doesn’t ETB animated. If you made a copy of an animated coin by saccing and equipped coin you will just get a copy of coin unanimated.
Dev im sure youve been told this already but Arena Decklist Podcast just did their top ten card of the set and they ranked Orcus as the best card in the set and they were also shocked no one else noticed.
Not sure I want my realmwalker to be compelled to attack every turn, tbh, but I love the Harryhausen flavour of Skeletal swarming, gonna jam it in a lot of decks
Is really no one talking about Orcus??? With cards like Goldspan dragon and all these new treasure token cards, I think its gonna be real easy to abuse him
Agree that people are sleeping on adult gold dragon, while he does not compete against goldspan, he does work as '5 cost flying haste dragon' numbers 5-8.
It's also better when you run out of cards, as I play goldspan all the time as the too end of gruel but like 1/3 of the time you have nothing left to use the treasures on, I'm hyped for the new dwagon
Honorable mention a Treasure Token would be like the new meta now days lol but yeah Ad Gold D was a good one for sure life link is my go to contingent for sure.
Tasha the one that exiles the top of the deck up to 20 cmc for 3 mana . Meaning lands count as zero . Straight exiles lands and that doesn't even count toward the 20cmc.
Cleric Class and Druid Class in a Bolas's Citadel deck is soooo fun. Mazemind/ Trelessara/ Azusa / Aetherflux / Doomskar. :) What have you been playing lately
If you make a copy of an animated talisman, it’s basically just a 4/4 artifact creature. You cannot “attach” a creature to another creature (thanks ikoria for making that complicated) so the equip ability doesn’t work. You can pay for it but you just lose the mana and get nothing out of it
Thanks for the vid Dev. Maybe you have a reason for not doing so, but please consider reading out the cards out loud before diving into them. Those who primarily listen to the vids, like me, appreciate that.
Orcus reminds me of plague demon with additional upside though weaker body .and isn't a plaque effect. I ran a monoblack with top end plague demon , it was good.
It’s true you did make the call on orcus. Can’t wait to bring it out all my zombos from the graveyard to buff up my champion of the perished. Edit: was also able to get 7 draft wins with orcus. Def a major limited bomb.
not sure if people are sleeping on her, but trelasarra will be a problem. getting a +1/+1 counter and scry 1 for each lifegain trigger will be absurd for a 2 cost. and then there is grim wanderer. 5/3 for 2 that can only be cast if a creature dies. oh but it has flash. have fun dealing with something that strong on turn 2.
I feel like the Spike in me loves this set for Limited, and wishes Eldraine and Ikoria weren't pushed so much that AFR cards get sideways glances. That said, Adult Gold Dragon is the Glorybringer clone of the set. It stabilizes against aggro and midrange, and 4 power Haste is good against control. I like it a lot better than previous Glorybringer clones like Goldspan and Skarrgan Hellkite because of the Lifelink making it immediately relevant against aggro. I feel like there is a Jeskai Dragon deck that I'll try in Standard and be disappointed until rotation.
Would mono red treasures & dragons be viable in standard? 🤔 You could a decent spread of options on the curve plus Inferno of the Star Mounts is both a good finisher and fairly easy to get to with treasures... If you manage to stick Magda and Xorn on the board it'd be fairly easy to put out the big dargon by t4. Honestly the deck kinda builds itself.
Hey, judge here, pretty sure there's no way for a creature yo be equipped to another creature. If I recall, as state based actions check, if something that isn't an aura or an equipment, or is a creature, is equiped to something else, it is unattached.

Were you pleased with your leather-clad wolfie boi?

Great breakdown and I am looking forward to dropping Orcus in a deck.
Village rites is the only card draw mono black needs
I second this.

I think You're right about Orcus. The modes deal with aggro and control...choices on under priced fatty is always solid.
That monologue was creepy and disturbing, right up my alley. 🤣👍
I totaly agree with Orcus, and I plan to play him in a Rakdos Treasure shell together with the Foresworn Paladin.
Thank you Dev for putting me onto Orcus, he is a gamewinner for sure!
Intro soliloquy was mighty, love ya Dev
These were all of the cards I was most excited about during spoilers. As soon as Orcus was revealed I was determined to make a deck with it.

The thing about the tomb is also that it’s the shortest dungeon to complete, and some cards have abilities activated by completing a dungeon
Orcus will be in competitive decks alongside archfiend's vessel.
