When Don Cornelius first came up with the idea of what was essentially to become an African American version of American Bandstand, the leading TV producers of the time laughed him out of their offices. When he persevered and brought Soul Train to fruition, turning it into a resounding success, those same producers tried to buy him out. When he refused to sell, they tried to run him out of the business by developing a copycat version of his show in an attempt to usurp his audience- they failed. Don Cornelius' father taught him at a very young age how to box, how to fight and stand up for himself against larger and stronger opponents. It was the grit and determination born of that earlier experience which made his initial success possible, and his eventual longevity in the business inevitable.
