- Fintech (financial technology) is not a new concept, but its influence of how we manage our finances has accelerated tremendously in recent years. Arman will explain why everyone (and not just finance professionals) should care about the growth and impact of fintech. Arman Eshraghi is a Professor of Finance and Chair of Finance and Investment at Cardiff Business School. His academic research spans finance, accounting and psychology with interests including behavioural finance, financial technology and corporate governance. His work is published in some of the leading academic journals, cited in the media including the Financial Times, Washington Post, Harvard Business Review, Forbes and Bloomberg. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Thanks for pointing out both the pros and cons of fintech. I currently study finance in college and love this field, but fear that the traditional finance industry will get disrupted by new technology.
With technology, instant transfers are happening like UPI in India, simplifying settlements and claims. Clearing houses will vanish. No need of brokers or mediators who had to support money movement through investment in cashflows.
Collateral and escrow business gets disrupted by block chain based smart contracts.
Investment consultants replaced by demat and smart algorithms digesting trillions of insights worldwide and generating accurate and precise advices through machine learning algorithms.
@@bkchaitany do you think fields like investment banking, asset management, fund management, private equity gonna get affected by fintech ?
@@harjasx absolutely! It already is! That is the premise of what Krishna speaks to ! 4th industrial revolution in parallel to the evolution of global consciousness.
@@originalpathpavers5767 Then what career in finance will be good for next 2 decades ? What about acturial science?
i've definitely heard of all this before and i get that cashless is the way of the future but i do hope we manage to hang on to the old ways a little bit. this guy delivered this talk so well though, i actually watched the whole through and was very curious!!
From the ATM to plastic cards, I'm pretty thrilled by online banking thank you.
I can see a day where everything is digital, including us!
just watched a talk where some guy is convinced we are going to have machine bodies and human brains soon... that weirded me out
What you said is intersting because if you think about it its already hapening with social network. For exemple Instagram (not always, but most of the time) make us less physical human and more digitale ones. Its a huge debate that i will be happy to talk about, but im righting on a french iphone keyboard that « corect me » on every word i say uhhgg 😭
@@maxpoyntz4960 definite not. the initial ones who gonna fall are lab rats in human form. have to take all there electric and magnetic field in high intense. in an most complicated part. human body.
Another simple but good video.
Yeah, kind of timely now too, it's not like banks are doing us any favors.
What is the future for fintech after COVID ?? Can you please suggest??
I hear about Fintech though don't understand it, mainly because its financial and technology together. Both things that I am not fond of. Thank you for expanding my view.
I do love the idea of being able to get rid of the monopoly a lot of the big corporations have... Block chains scare me though! I've heard some pretty terrible things... But as long as we can ensure that such technology isn't helping feed the darker side of the internet I would be all for it.
:) great talk , thank you
I am now buying bitcoin, because its so easy to get now. The institution fought it, and now they are all in!
There is so much on the news about a cashless society, it's happening, we can't stop it now.
dont stop it, get some crypto
I wish we could some days!
Erik, yes - Paul Tudor Jones, a large hedge-fund manager and founder of Tudor Investment Corporation, says he is buying bitcoin futures. He says that Bitcoin is a an inflation hedge against "great monetary inflation," and reminds him of gold in the 70s.
I’m so glad I had to join this page. Very new to crypto don’t really know how to start investing. Any help?
that solo wheel motorcycle looks dope af. i want one
I remember when Bitcoin was launched, and all the experts made fun of it, I remember each and every time some so-called expert said it would fall and crumble. But here we are, still growing and now spawning so many other Crypto Currencies.
I know, and I have mine and want to get more.
We are moving to a cashless society, and soon EVERYTHING WE DO will be seen by the government and the banks.
It already is
So what?
The point of de-centralised crypto currencies is that we will lose the intermediaries from controlling the money flows. It is a payment system from peer to peer transactions. The banks will have nothing to do with your money. We are literally diverging from the big banks rather than succumbing to them...
@@KRS31477 it will be like using a debit card with out a bank they can still track every purchase back to you
@@robinworkman3621 Sure they can. It will take them a lot of resources to do that, so its flattering. Also, if I needed to hide my purchases I would find a way ;)
Did I just see a big hedge fund manager declare he bought a lot of crypto?
I saw that a while ago too, and the last few weeks been watch Bitcoin, wow.
This came up in our group and I wasn't going to watch, but I am glad I did.
Glad you liked it!
I finally watched too Lucy..
I watched also Lucy
The top 10 companies in 2019 include Financial companies. I'm seeing the Fintech trend here.
Haha, I still balance a checkbook the old fashion way. I had the power company ask if I could just do online and I refused, they couldn't believe it!
haha how cool, love that.
good!
I finally bought Bitcoin this year, just a bit and no this isnt an ad. But wow it's really going up.
All of this, all of this new way of banking - paying - investing is terrifying. Without regulations like we used to have everything seems so risky...
scares me too
Freedom is risky
@@vecin0 very true
But it is regulated..... Perhaps regulators have not caught up 100% but any firm handling payments (for example) need a banking licence or to partner with someone who does.....
Everything has its risks. Recall the global financial crisis which sent the whole worlds economies spinning into demise. People lost homes and their savings. With crypto currencies you wont have bankers as middlemen making bubbles out of your own money.
And when it all becomes digital currency, we the people will have lost whatever freedom we had left.
10000% agree, give me cash I cant put in the mattress
Currency itself in any form limits freedom.
yeah, but bitcoin has nearly triple in a few months, that can spell freedom.
K
freedom? Ive been in and out of lockdowns all year?
You know what, I miss cold hard cash, when I use cash I know how much I have and how much I can spend.
me too
big institutions with too much power.
those days are over Turk!
give me a dollar dollar, a dollar is what I need!
I agree, give me bills and coins
The commentators suggesting that digital currency is wrong are simply stuck in another age and time. It is 2020.
Great marketing 🤩
I really wonder whats going to happen with the BC split during this virus crisis?
Who will dominate, I'l glad to hear him mentioning caution.
I can't even remember using cash except coins for parking meters, but isn't that causing us to lose sight of the value of money - its now a click away and then away for good.
My Mother told me, if you can't see it, you don't have it. I feel this way about a lot of technology that's out there somewhere.
Mine said the same.
@@bigdollarsigns haha, you are the brother then from the same thinking mother!
Your mother is a wise woman, but she has a misconception about how money and currencies work. For example, a dollar bill is still just a piece of paper and as a piece of paper it is not worth much. However, the value to the piece of paper comes from the fact that other people accept it in turn for some other valuable like an orange. The value is created by people and their trust into the one dollar bill that it will buy you something. This is also true for crypto currencies, because people trust them and they are willing to give valuables for it.

Fintech has changed financial system in Bangladesh. Now a days huge number of transaction are occurring through mobile banking.
But isn't this area of the world less controlled by big banks? And isn't fintech aimed more at moving away from traditional banks?
@@geoffdeeprose9469 Yes, Financial sector of Bangladesh is not largely based on Capital market, though there is stock exchange. But Their performance is not satisfactory yet. Financial sector of Bangladesh is based on Banking sectors. U can't imagine, here local bank is doing great, bringing financial transactions in people’s smartphone. Mobile banking received highest numbers of transactions in few years. U can find ATM enabling Fast track in everywhere of the country. More than 19 bank doing agent banking here door to door. Now Bangladesh has near about 60 commercial bank. Almost all of them providing e banking, mobile banking. U can search Bkash, Rocket, Ucash, SureCash and some of them replacing paypal and many more in case of money transfer and so many financial transactions.
@@shahediqbalshakil8321 you think this is the model for the west? or parts of it?
Rural areas in Bangladesh have traditionally accessed finance through informal lenders or microfinance. Interestingly, bKash, the country’s largest mobile financial service provider also started through BRAC, the largest NGO in Bangladesh's microfinance wing.
@@geoffdeeprose9469 We
can say it may not be the model for the west but rest of the world. The positive change FinTech brings is the results of Financial globalization. Bangladesh doesn’t need what is acceptable to the west at this moment. It needs more and more support for the ongoing economic booming though what corona brings for us is still in doubt but there is some positive news from exports of RMG growth even in this crisis. U can study Bangladesh from global financial journals such as economist and why they are saying it as one of the new Asian tiger. Thanks for ur enquiry.
It still feels like a way for rich bankers to take more from us.
FinTech now has less to do with banks then ever before

I never use cash anymore, I wonder if we are going to get to a point when its all digital.
Oh yes, Blockchain, that's my new bank, like the Cloud unit I have to store and find my stuff. I like when they tell my storage is almost full and need to pay just a little bit more. Really, if I didn't have a sense of humor I'd be crazier!
I'm lost, is block-chain like a chain-gang trying to out do the banks?
i understand the revolution came in the mobile phones uses but i am still concerned the minimal cost I need to pay to run it
And BC split, lets now hang on and see!!!!!
I agree that Nexchain is about to shade some alt coins away in the market.
Has anyone seen this new REVOLUT app? Just asking.
Sec started regulation in 2008! Yes 👏
Welcome to the new world of finance and a cashless society. Better hang on to those old mattresses!!
But aren't we losing freedom with fintech, are we now tracked more than we ever have been?
essentially
The was like the old hitting the hornets nest, I just don't get it why people are so wound up? Stuff evolves and this is part of it.
I read the Australias post office is now allowing customers to buy bitcoins!!!

I understand how this is good for some, but digital transactions scare me, you can't count what you give or get back. And then my money travels down an electronic highway I have no control over.
How is traditional banking better
the inflows and outflows are more tangible
@@aprilla9112 you can cash out your intangible money if you feel like that'll help you have more security over your money. But infact what you're currency is worth is dictated by the stock market and other factors which are totally digital values on computers. So no money is tangible anymore I'm afraid.

The one thing not many discuss is as governments and major banks authorise more digital control, the more people will look for alternative ways of exchanging goods and services. I suggest barter will find a way back.
