  • 2019 is a special year for us, as it marks our 50th anniversary and the launch of our #LC50 campaign.
We'll be commemorating our 50th year by working harder than ever to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of leukaemia.
To kickstart our campaign, we spoke to Drew Laird, who last year was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML). Since his diagnosis, Drew has been improving his life and the lives of other leukaemia patients through his fitness journey, and later in the week we'll be showcasing his fitness videos made especially for blood cancer patients.
In this video, Drew talks more about the symptoms he had before diagnosis.

Hope you are doing okay Drew. My name is Sam I live in Florida and I was diagnosed with CML 3 years ago at the age of 45. I was immediately put on the drug Tasigna,. And my life has never been the same since. I struggle with extreme fatigue, pain in my hands and feet , as well as nausea and mental weakness. Don't get me wrong, I still find ways to have fun, joke with my buddies, enjoy time with my children and have begun to appreciate all things beautiful on this great planet. I can tell from watching other videos and reading that patients taking tki drugs have many different symptoms and reactions. I sincerely hope that you are doing well over a year after your diagnosis and I'm sure it is hard for friends and family to realize what you are going through when you look like that on the outside. I feel like I have the same problem but I'm sure it is all just in my head. Keep up the good work!!!!🙂

This video would have been more useful if there was information on how you live with the disease, how it's affected your life, etc?

This seems to be matching with my suffering: Last Year I have got heart insufficience caused by a silent heart attack which was confirmed after symptomatic smaller stroke symptoms like speech disorder. After strange but good working drug medication to support my heart I have got suddenly highly elevated leucocyt and platelet counts (WBC near to 40 PLT near to 700!). All former counts showed WBC at around 12 and PLT at around 270. The last counts were checked up by hematologist who diagnosed PH positive CML. Your experience says to me, that my cardiologist's meaning of the relationship between my cardiovascular events with possibly several year lasting CML in the background may be confirmed. Now I think about, that my TKI sensitive CML is a more better treatable desease than a coronar heart desease alone. I hope that Imatinib will also treat my slight pulmonary hypertension caused by still present minor valve leakings in my heart. Now I feel well with Imatinib 400, Nebivolol 10, Candesartan 24, Eplerenon 25, Apixaban 10, Rosuvastatin 20 and Xipamid 10. Hope this will stay stable. My hematologist is optimistic, that I can go to watch and wait after 2 years constant daily intake of 400 mg Imatinib. This will depend to my development of BCR-ABL marker down to below limit of detection of regularly taken PCR - testings in my blood and bone marrow. Stay healthy and greetings from Berlin. Thank You so much for sharing Your highly interesting and helpful story 😊

Hello, heart is stable and OK (close to normal function with reference to my age) and BCR-ABL - marker reached molecular remission M4, subjective health feeling is excellent anemia also disappears slowly from control to control. Treatment remains the same as mentioned. Currently everything is fine. 😉
