I used to accumulate old tickets, back when we still got paper tickets. Around here they forced a lot of us onto cards a few years ago by making that the only way to get concession fares. So now I never have a handy bookmark when I need one.
I don't travel very much by train, but yes, I also find it very hard to throw them away. Perhaps in my case it's because each one is easy to remember and is usually linked to a happy time.
For me, it's old paper movie stubs. May be showing my age here, but ticket stubs from Jurassic Park, Ninja Turtles, Lord of the Rings, even an early Star Wars release.
You're not the only one, I almost never threw away train tickets. Then public transport switched to digital cards (where I live) and that became an old memory. Until I heard this song, that is.
Thomas, thank you for answering my question. My heart is now mended. if you are unfamiliar with Jerry Garcia then you must make certain that you search for his work with the bluegrass band Old and in the Way. Otherwise you will come up with mostly Grateful Dead results, and that is a whole universe unto itself. I was interested in your thoughts on his banjo playing which you will find mostly with Old and in the Way. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Great song this week. I can relate.
I don't generally keep them in my pocket or wallet, but they do accumulate in various boxes and on shelved😂 My wallet is instead stuffed full of old receipts. Because what if I might need them at some point??
I get it. I haven't had many chances to have this experience, but I've done similar with baggage tags from flying. I left the old tags on my suitcase for probably a decade before I had to take them off to put on a new one when I needed to fly again.
I absolutely agree. Somehow, old train tickets just take up residence in my purse and never leave. I have deliberately kept tickets from my trip to Bruges on the Eurostar and put them into my holiday scrapbook.
When I first started traveling to Germany (now a resident) I kept all of the tickets from my journey in a folder, from the point of departure in West Yorkshire to the arrival in Mecklenburg, NE Germany, and back. They accumulated to the point where the A4 folder got rather hefty. I've lived here in the Fatherland for around 10 years now, but only about two years ago did I summon up the courage/fake bravado/Geist to get rid of them all. I didn't burn them and sob, I just put them in the recycling bin. A rather disappointing ending, I think. Now I live in Germany, and I'm finding English train tickets again from my visits back to Yorkshire. If one is sentimental, then one is sentimental, and it'll never change, I guess. We love the sound here, by the way.
passenger trains aren't really popular in the states, unfortunately, but buses are pretty widely-used in areas that have them, and i have this EXACT experience with bus passes and bus transfers! after you put your coins in, the bus driver asks if you want a transfer (so you can go to another bus route without having to pay a whole nother dollar), and i have a hard time throwing them away, because theyre really like souvenirs. thankfully, at least in my county, the bus passes and transfers only say the time it was given to you, the time when itll expire, and the time when it was used, so once i forget when i used it, its ready to be thrown out, but for passes i used to fun locations like the travelling funfairs, even though i have photos, i can't summon the courage to throw the pass away until i forget that that's when i used it. maybe that's a little different from what you're talking about in the song, but nevertheless it's super relatable LOL
Not so much train tickets (not really a thing here, what with the lack of non-tourist-excursion passenger trains here-abouts), but I definitely have a similar problem with receipts from shopping trips... to the point where I've stopped putting them in my wallet (I'm at least good about clearing my pockets when I get home)... though now they're accumulating on my desk... need to go through them and toss out all the ones that don't matter anymore.
As a volunteer conductor at a couple of heritage railways, a role that involves handing out tickets to passengers, I often end up finding train tickets in all sorts of places in my house. XD Lots of people collect them as a genuine hobby. Love this song, though. Very clever and very funny.
I don't get nostalgic about old train tickets, but I do forget to throw them away. Often, I discover my mistake when I take the clothes out of the washing machine...
A while back we had a ticketing system that was leased not owned by the traveller, so we technically weren't allowed to throw them out. Not that anybody took notice :P
Not train tickets for me, but I definitely have movie tickets in my wallet that are just completely blank slips of paper because they are so old that all the ink has faded away.
Movie stubs used to be awesome but now they fade quickly if you get them printed at all. I make my non successful lottery tickets (that would be all of them) into origami things but that's just disappointment in layers.

"Seek assistance" is a very panic inducing pair of words 😅😅

I never rode a train, but when I had a dog I used to find empty poo bags and treats in my pockets all the time

Beautifull song, thanks for the update.
Another amazing song as usual
Pretty sure I’ve still got one or two from England at the bottom of my handbag! 🤣
Loved the song.
You’re Britain’s answer to Leon Redbone, sir! 👍
You could include bus tickets as well. :) Also, that song would sound great if you did it as a duet with yourself, Tom!

I would like to say how much I enjoy your music.
Have you ever considered singing Pigeons by Genesis?
Is Blue, Red and Grey by The Who in your repertoire?
In the US we solve that by either having no mass transit at all or that we do have is rubbish.
Will you be coming to the east coast of Yorkshire at any point near Filey?

not just you I also do it with receipts filling up my wallet
And I thought it was just me that kept old train tickets
i do the same with receipts. i'll save the most worthless receipts that get mixed in with the important ones.
