What an incredibly underrated film. I don't think people appreciated the juxtaposition of Shakespeare with modern day warfare though. In general people don't appreciate Shakespeare's work enough
"MAKE YOU A SWORD OF ME" and "long as my exile sweet as my revenge" are my two favorite lines so far from this flick. I can't wait to hear the rest of it, when I watch it on DVD
Yeah! When I picture Ralph Fiennes I picture him as the British Private Military Contractor from The Hurt Locker! Though he did die very early, he still played a total badass.
To the folks not very familiar with Shakespeare: the words are never changed, only cut. And it is up to the filmmakers and actors to help the modern viewer understand the sometimes strange words. Also, this was never regular speech at any time. I enjoy a fine Shakespeare movie almost more than a play on stage. And certainly WS would be making moves these days. He was very successful making popular entertainment, that simply was so great it became immortal.
Two of my favorite visions of the male form in one movie: Gerald Butler and Ralph Fiennes. And in Shakesphere modern style. Who could ask for anything more?
What is really neat about the movie is that it was filmed in Serbia and Montenegro. As the most recent Balkan War is not that far in the past, it fit right in with the movie's theme. Worth checking out.
It might be. But a huge part was filmed in Serbia. The parliament scenes are in the Serbian parliament and the IFV as well as the tanks are from the Serbian Armed Forces.
In french, we just call Him Coriolan, which sounds pretty damn badass. Its one of the rare ocasion where the Translated title of a movie is actually better then the original. Loved this movie by the way. Best scene is when Coriolan insults the People on the Talk Show :D
craig wahabb No, don't. It's well acted by Fiennes, but the Shakespearean language alone is very irritating. The trailer is misleading in that it makes this look like an action film, which it is not. If you're a fan of Shakespeare then give it a look. If not, take a pass
Amazing movie - saw it at the London Film Festival in October, and attended the preview last week. Sooo enjoyed it the first time, LOVED it the second time. Run, don't walk to your nearest cinema when it opens! (in the UK it's out on 20 Jan). I am a big fan of his anyway - but this was breathtaking.
Saw this last night, it's a horrendously brilliant piece of art, doesn't feel like your watching a film, more like you paying a movie ticket's worth of a modern slice of distinguishing brilliance.
This must have been a marketing nightmare for the Weinsteins. Moving Shakespeare into the modern age while maintaining the original prose is always a difficult proposition.
Baz Luhrmann managed it in Romeo + Juliet if you'll remember. I think making a period drama or a modern adaptation isn't that novel. Old English with a death metal background score intrigues though..
[editted pretty much everything] It would've been a pretty cool movie if not for Shakespearean language, especially in the 21st century setting. And before anyone else tries to point out that it's based on his play. So are countless adaptations of Romeo and Juliet or Hamlet. And although some use the original screen text, not all of them do.
Chrinik I see your point. But not only that's not apparent from the trailer, which is missleading. It also creates this strange situation where they don't acknowlage modern times, because of the time Shakespeare wrote. To me it just breaks the movie. Kind of strange tbh.
MadBunnyRabbit "MAKE A SWORD OF ME!" yelled near the end of the trailer.... Sure, it doesn´t include much of the dialog so it´s hard to tell, but the very first line Gerard Butler sais in the trailer should be a dead giveaway as to what to expect from the dialog. Yes, they don´t account for modern times, but they do switch from guns to knifes quite a bit.
Chrinik So? Look how trailer is cut. To make them sound as normal people. This and the dragon line just sound cool, for a trailer. And then I go to watch the movie and even with subtitles I struggle to understand some scenes. For example. How was he showing pride? Maybe through some subtleties in the language, or what was considered being pride in Shakespeare's time, but I don't see it. At times he actually seems humble. At others he's just arrogant. But not for a second I saw an ounce of pride in Coriolanous. Which makes me actually sympathise with him. Which leads to the problem of the ending. Where I feel he got screwed. When the moral of the story is his downfall due to his pride. Breaks the movie, as I said and I stand by it.
This trailer is so good but so misleading! It makes the movie look like an action movie when it's another dopey Shakespearean drama with bits of warfare
Just watched this last night on DVD. It...was...AWESOME! Seriously, the movie was just so awesome. The locations were beautiful (despite the use of graffiti and the destroyed buildings,) the acting was phenomenal, the actors themselves were incredible and the dialogue had me holding on to every word. I dare say that this is an even better modern day set Shakespeare movie than Romeo and Juliet. Tonight, I'm watching it again
Indeed it's a shame they have never seen films like 'The English Patient", or 'The Phantom Of the Opera', two great movies of these great actors of our time!
It is a modern take on the classic Roman Story. The cast is excellent and it flows very well in modern settings even with the old fashion Romanized Engish dialogue.
great film :D taking the setting from ancient rome and putting it into a modern equivalent was a delightful twist by ralph fiennes, who knew he could direct as well as he acted. (lol) really made me imagine what if Italy was still fractured and made up of loosely affiliated cultural sub groups (romans, volsci, samnites, aurunci, etc.) still feuding on the peninsula in the modern world. alternative history :)
@aaajohn2 Not sure for who you are talking about but i think at 1:40 you can see Brian Cox, who played Agamemnon in the movie "Troy", who was THE KING of Mycaena
Does anyone know the U.S. release date for this movie? I've read Jan 20 but other sites said Dec 2. Someone PLEASE tell me the date! I'm so psyched for this movie, I'm on pins and needles waiting for it
I appreciate Harry Potter for making Fiennes more known among my generation, but it's really sad that so many people immediately think of Voldemort when it comes to his film roles, and many times they are hardly aware of any of the other numerous roles that he played.
Well, Gladiator and The Last Samurai were some of the best movies I've ever watched... though it doesn't have Russel Crowe or Tom Cruise, I still love a lot of people on the cast, like Ralph Fiennes (Schindlers List, 007:Skyfall) and Brian Cox (who played Agamemnon in Troy and Herr Goerring in Nuremburg). Gerald Butler is also a cool fellow, though I don't think he is as good an actor as the other two... he is still kick ass though, and I loved his performances in 300 and Law abiding citizen. Hopefully the movie is good :)
@SugarBombs89 I'd have to partially disagree. Shakespeare's Hamlet was directed by Kenneth Branagh and starred himself as the main character Hamlet and it was simply amazing...
hello from Serbia ... this film made in Belgrade main capital of serbia couple streets away from my building -_- i love Gerard Butler he is great actor .... xd
No one beats Shakespeare for showing conflict and human nature. "You are not my son' says Coroilanus' mother, horrified at the man she has raised, even though her goal every second of every day for all those years, was to make a monster military genius who would increase her glory. And when he becomes alienated suddenly she pulls out the tears... she's no less evil then her son himself.
I looked up the name Coriolanus on Wikipedia long ago and I thought I saw an article explaining the meaning behind the name. I could be wrong, of course. As for book suggestions, I've read quite a few of his pieces. Antony and Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Midsummer Night's Dream and my all-time favorite play, Romeo and Juliet
What an incredibly underrated film. I don't think people appreciated the juxtaposition of Shakespeare with modern day warfare though. In general people don't appreciate Shakespeare's work enough
Loved this movie , saw ot in the theatre befoe the datk times , before the covid.
"MAKE YOU A SWORD OF ME" and "long as my exile sweet as my revenge" are my two favorite lines so far from this flick. I can't wait to hear the rest of it, when I watch it on DVD
Possibly the two most gifted actors of our time.
Leionidas and Voldemort got into Modern warfare
The Phantom and red dragon)
Finally, something original, well directed and well acted. I'm looking out for this in the cinemas
I loled when he said:"Coriolanus has grown from man to dragon."
If you watched Red Dragon, you will know what i mean.
Yeah!
When I picture Ralph Fiennes I picture him as the British Private Military Contractor from The Hurt Locker!
Though he did die very early, he still played a total badass.

Loved this movie
"And then men will die" Holy crap I need to see this movie!
Two of my favorite visions of the male form in one movie: Gerald Butler and Ralph Fiennes. And in Shakesphere modern style. Who could ask for anything more?
Ralph Fiennes did a dozen amazing movies, one of the most brilliant actors.. and he will now never live Voldemort down.
What is really neat about the movie is that it was filmed in Serbia and Montenegro. As the most recent Balkan War is not that far in the past, it fit right in with the movie's theme. Worth checking out.
I am pretty sure it was filmed in England, at least in parts.
Best scene is when Coriolan insults the People on the Talk Show :D
so i should watch it ?
craig wahabb

Steve Em i wish you commented before :'(
it was exactly as you said
Ludwig Von Friedreih yeah love the movie
cheeze zlayer Yeah man, unlike these guys, you get the movie and how good it is!
This man will always be one of my favourite actors for his role in Red Dragon.
Amazing movie - saw it at the London Film Festival in October, and attended the preview last week. Sooo enjoyed it the first time, LOVED it the second time. The first somebody mentioned the title to me I was like:
"color your what!?"
"You're a fool Leonidas, and you will lose...everything."
Saw this last night, it's a horrendously brilliant piece of art, doesn't feel like your watching a film, more like you paying a movie ticket's worth of a modern slice of distinguishing brilliance.
One of the best movies i've ever watched ..
what is the trailer's soundtrack?
TTL - It's Here
So is setting in like a modern Roman Empire?
Can't unhear..
This looks great! Awesome cast!
Lord Voldemort ! He has a nose !!!
and King Leonidas didn't yelled even once "This is Sparta" !!!
Coriolanus has fallen
this looks AWESOME!!!!
this guy will always be in my mind as Leonidas
Is that Voldemort ? :D
yes
Oh, Voldemort has a new deadly spell!
AvaaaadaCoriolanus!
His motivation is to win at every occasion to challenge!
I've seen that exact comment on 20+ other trailers today, great job.

+MadBunnyRabbit They kept the entire dialog from the Shakespeare play...I actually feel it´s one of the movies selling points.
Chrinik I see your point. But not only that's not apparent from the trailer, which is missleading. It also creates this strange situation where they don't acknowlage modern times, because of the time Shakespeare wrote. To me it just breaks the movie. Kind of strange tbh.

This trailer is so good but so misleading! It makes the movie look like an action movie when it's another dopey Shakespearean drama with bits of warfare
WOW!!! looks amazing
Awesome! Amazing make of a movie!
Just watched this last night on DVD. It...was...AWESOME!

Ralph Fiennes is a beast.
thanks for the info :-)
It is a modern take on the classic Roman Story. The cast is excellent and it flows very well in modern settings even with the old fashion Romanized Engish dialogue.
Just finished the play last night--this looks like an interesting adaptation!

Ralph Fiennes is really awesome when playing an "evil" character.
my thought exactly.
the name and the way the trailer started made me think it was going to be like "300"! DAMN IT!
This Ia Madnes!!
excellent movie
YES!!! THIS!! -X-
I'm the only one who loved this movie?
I love the way the trailer tries to tip toe around the fact that the dialogue is Shakespearean.
Awesome starcast with King Leonidas, Agammemnon and Hades.
@aaajohn2 Not sure for who you are talking about but i think at 1:40 you can see Brian Cox, who played Agamemnon in the movie "Troy", who was THE KING of Mycaena
That's the quickest movie I've ever seen, by the trailer.
This film requires cognitive function and good handling of English language. This was gold and underrated due to its audience.
this is it!
Does anyone know the U.S. release date for this movie? I've read Jan 20 but other sites said Dec 2.
Someone PLEASE tell me the date! I'm so psyched for this movie, I'm on pins and needles waiting for it

dam trailers are addicting :S
Wow Ralph is doing double duty. It looks good.
Gerald Buttler !!!!!! Yes man.... :-)
@sflondongal If that's so, do you think Coriolanus will have a wider release on Jan 20
you're so scandinavian. glad you agree!
looking solid
Good trailer, one of the better modern adaptations of shakespeare; definitely one of Gerard Butler's best as well.
@SugarBombs89 I'd have to partially disagree. Shakespeare's Hamlet was directed by Kenneth Branagh and starred himself as the main character Hamlet and it was simply amazing...
great trailer, i hope the movie is great too. does anyone know the what's the name of the soundtrack?
Great action needs a popcorn.😎💥
Awesome. Reminds me of the conflict in Ukraine. Man never changes.
🔥
hello from Serbia ... this film made in Belgrade main capital of serbia couple streets away from my building -_- i love Gerard Butler he is great actor .... xd

@sadlobster1 it was released in the US on 2 December - but I'm guessing it didn't hit a lot of cinemas outside of New York, LA etc
THIS IS SPARTAAAA!
Please someone tell me the name of the song at 0:34 , sorry for my english :s
