I think its more of environment. To get good at golf at the tour level, you need to play at a relatively young age. If you grew up with a parent you played at any level, you will get that early exposure

Some people definitely just ‘have it’. When we were about 13, a mate on his first time ever playing beat all us who had years of lessons, he went on to be a pro but never good enough to go tour or anything. He’s a coach now.

I’m a firm believer that if my dad was still alive I would be a better golfer. He died when I was 3 and he loved golf. The man has golf on his headstone. I got into golf last year. If he had raised me, I bet I wouldn’t be a 25 handicap hahaha.

In football it’s about who you know. I grew up with lads who were different class but didn’t have the opportunity that some of the other lads had who ended up at Southampton, reading, Bournemouth. Golf is different, who you know helps in terms of coaching etc but raw ability and talent is what gets you there

Definitely, it’s pretty easy for famous football dads to have the ins to put there sons through academies and get pro contracts (also a team sport so easy to hide) same with boxing, I think it’s rare to
Find a super elite athlete and sons carry that on. Maatweathers dad wasn’t super elite, very good but nowhere close to mayweather jnr and unfortunately same for golf pros. That’s comparative to a sport like tennis realistically, it’s a single man sport where you must earn your merit, there’s no hiding or secret in. Maybe you get better opportunity through coaching and access but nothing makes up for hard work combined with talent

@@thisizcle140 access and exposure to the sport is more difficult but not detrimental. If your parents saw you had an interest in the game it’s costs no more than doing most sports after you’ve acquired clubs. Just play cheap courses/ parks, And go to a range all pretty cheap alternatives. Problem is it’s not perceive as a working class sport.

No one is born with golf skills. One may be born with natural athletic ability, but it's what they do beyond that. To be a great golfer takes a lot of effort and dedication, and most people can achieve that if they put in the work. Natural ability only gets you so far. Hard work is what gets the job done.

It’s also based on the number of spaces available. There’s far more places in the premier league than on the pga tour. And with boxing fewer people do it so they’re more likely to get into the limelight. The thing with golf and tennis is they’re so widely played yet there are very few spots at the top, that’s what I think it probably is anyway

I personally think the difference is in the mentality, some kids get taught by the best from very young, but they just don’t have that hunger to be the best, they practice all they like but that desire just isn’t there, look at all the best athletes in the world and the work they put in to get to the top, woods, Jordan, Schumacher, unbelievable work ethic and drive. unless the child inherits that, they won’t be as good,

  • @josephselby3466

Ricks final point is the most important although I’m sure all the points you both made play a part. Golf is based on pure merit. Having a golfer dad will give you an opportunity to get the best coaching etc, but if you aren’t the most naturally gifted then your dads name or knowing people and having loads of money doesn’t help you win tournaments. In football if you’ve got David Beckham talking to a scout, agent or football development director about their son, they are at minimum getting a trial but most likely being gifted a place in the team. Not all of them will make it but they will for sure get more opportunities along the way. As someone who played youth team and reserve football at championship level, I know very well that with football it’s very often about who you know. Same with boxing to a degree, boxing is merit based, but when they are starting out it’s much easier for a promoter to sell a fight if your surname is Eubank, Benn, Hatton, Chavez etc even if you’re only an average boxer. They are normally fighting handpicked easy opponents early doors, its only when they move up to elite level they get found out and realise they aren’t as good as their dad

It’s the same way in hockey…the pros get their sons on the best teams…With top playing time. I’ve seen some honestly bad players get really good when they’re on the ice all the time with the other best players! 😲
In golf I agree you can get your son the best coaching etc…but eventually you have to shoot the scores. I could see getting your son to a D1 college no problem even if they don’t fully deserve to be there, but as far as getting to that next level and being on tour, you gotta be good enough

Keke Rosberg, F1 WC, and father of Nico, also F1 WC.
It could be both ways, a benefit or deficit to have succesfull parent inbthe same sport.
It is really different in teams sports, cause the team is there. One single player don’t have to be as good compared to the best of the best to stand out and win championships.
In motorsport, no matter how talented you are, you’ll still need a lot of money to even have a chance and acces to competetive team and car at the top. If you’re second or even the best talentswise, there is still a chance, you don’t have the upper hand and end up driving a second class race car without the pace to win races.

Natural born ability and genetics are the foundations for a great athlete. The average person cannot compete with that no matter how much work they put into it. However, the naturally gifted person will never reach their potential without hard work and dedication. BTW... Andre Agassi's and Stefi Graf's son didn't go into tennis. He is a standout baseball player at University of Southern California.

My opinion is golf has never been as glamorous and has not offered the attraction to be a pro like a footballer for example, with the popularity of the game now, thats changing so we may see more children of pros coming in to the sport. I think the other issue with golf especially in the UK is accessibility, you don’t play it at school like you do football and other sports, its also expensive, so where you may have talent out there you just wont find it purely because of financial viability for some people. A few hundred pounds a year for a kid to be a member + equipment vs £50 for some cheap boots is a massive contrast.

Definitely advantages with Dads & Moms that play at that kinda level , but the child still has to want it & , be willing to put in the work . Still not a sure thing though , it may even put pressure , where it's not warranted due to trying to live up to a parent's expectations ..or what they have accomplished . As a scratch player , I know I am miles away from the guys & gals on tv ...people really don't understand how amazingly good they truly are .

Athletes breed athletes, but golfing is different. While a proper golf swings needs some sort of athleticism, golf is an acquired skill. Born into a golf family will enhance your exposure to the game allowing you to become better and possibly great.

Another point: There are 5 "big" football leagues in Europe - and there are even more if you're playing in some of the lesser known leagues (and can still be a popular player and make a very, very good living). There are also leagues in North and South America. And each of these leagues has maybe between 10-20 teams with maybe (no idea) 20-30 man rosters. In golf, there are only two "big" leagues, the PGA Tour and the European Tour, and each tournament allows somewhere between 80-150ish golfers at a time. There is maybe at most 300 spots for a golfer to play at the elite level every week, whereas there are thousands of spots to play in a sport like football. There are just more leagues and teams. Football is also WAY easier to grasp than golf is.

The thing you aren't taking in account is how many more kids are playing football and trying to become professional compared to golf. I'd safely say that for every 100 kids playing football there's 1 kid playing golf (that's probably on the conservative side, especially thinking about how expensive golf is, whereas playing soccer is done in developing countries all over the world). So sure there might be more spots in the premier league than on tour, but there is much more competition for those spots in football

    • @imCurveee
      @imCurveee 2 роки тому

@@ethanlink3639 Sure, but we're not talking about including random people trying to become pros. We're talking about existing athletes kids specifically. And assuming they have access to all the funding and training facilities they need, they are going to, on average, (as the hypothesis goes) beat out the other kids trying to go pro who dont have all those resources behind them.

Getting to the top in football is based on who you know. Having a dad that's a footballer will open doors.
Being a golfer, if you're not good enough, your scores show. It's black and white, whereas football is based on a person's opinion.

Ahh, the ole’ nature vs. nurture discussion.
I don’t think it’s as easy as one or the other. I’ll say 1/4 nature 3/4 nurture. Athletes can be made and some physically have a head start but all need to be developed.

elite athletic skills are genetic. But when you look at the best players of all time they all share one thing in common, work ethic. they had the natural talent, but they also had the work ethic to maximize the potential of that natural ability. there is a reason we see multi generational athletic families. when you look at golf, if someones kid is the 500th best golfer in the world, he might never play on tour, but if you are the 500th best football or hockey player, there will be a professional career for you. the pga tour really is the elite of the elite, and only the elite of that group have memorable careers.

Any decently athletic child could accel massively if they had a pro athlete as a parent. Knowledge and training access alone are not comparable. Natural talent helps only so far, you have to have the drive to win and compete.
