    I think there must've been an American at Abus who said "make it big and shiny and they will come"...and it worked!!!😍😍😍...now I want it! 😉✌

    Nice! I've been waiting to see this lock come through.
    I like how you added the 6th pin and that insert you fashioned was slick.
    As soon as I saw those pins and core + housing I started reeling the possibilities. Lol
    Very nice lock and nice picking as well.
    Keep them coming.
    Rob

      Thanks. This core does have good potential. I believe Abus has better cores that fit in this lock as well, but they don't seem to be very common on the locks making their way across the Atlantic.

    Amazing, you can pick it in hand. I would definitely need a vice for something like that. Also the bitting on that key is cartoonish in its appearance, its beautiful. The first thing I thought of was Alcatraz thanks for another wonderful tutorial.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  8 років тому +4

      Thanks. I try not to pick padlocks in vices anymore, if only to add some realism to the exercise. It also adds another element of difficulty, which keeps things interesting.

    Great video! Might be a good idea to put a ruler next time though, until I saw your hands it was really hard to see how big this lock really was 😀

      Thanks -- I usually like to use other (more common) locks to give perspective, but a ruler is a good idea. Now I just need a ruler... I don't think I've seen one since elementary school. :-(

    Although I'm not a locksmith by any means, I once repaired an Abus Rock similar to the one in this video.
    The key kept getting stuck inside the keyhole and after unlocking it, I removed the screw that holds the cone in place and discovered that the screws that hold the actuator onto the end of the core were loose. This caused the core to move slightly within the chamber and jamming the key. All I had to do to fix it was tighten the loose actuator screws, put the core back inside the lock body, test the key and finally, reinstall the screw that holds the core inside the lock and bang, the lock was fixed and no more jammed keys although the spring has begun to lose some tension due to age but the lock works much better than it used to.

    What a sweet lock. So many great features .I especially like that you can repin it without removing the core. Nice bitting as well !Thanks for sharing this one with us brother.

    Great video! I have one of those, but I haven't keyed it up - the shackle is huge, I have an ABUS chain that the S&G environmental lock will fit through, but no go for this monster. Thanks for picking it and disassembling it for us. Mine came with a spool, spring and a flat piece of steel for the sixth pin. This was in a small plastic bag in the box.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  8 років тому

      Thanks. After seeing your comment, I checked the box again, and found the spring, pin and top cover... I'm feeling pretty silly. Oddly enough, after I put the Abus pin in, it felt easier! Not sure if that's me getting experience on the lock or the lock actually being easier with the Abus pin in slot 6.

    • @tedpark6814
      @tedpark6814 8 років тому

      Glad to hear you found the driver and spring - I found it very difficult to open, even with a relatively easier bitting configuration. Congratulations on opening this very challenging kind of lock!

    I love seeing ridiculous locks. Great pinning job, and great picking. On the I think it's the 80/45s They come with a insert,spring and I believe a top pin for 6 pin keys. Looking at the core next to the lock was hysterical to me. Cool vid, you "Rock", yes pun intended!

      +LockPickingLawyer I think it doesn't matter what he pinning is. You make picking look like childs play. When do we see you not pick one, or give up "for now" vid? At least at that point I could believe you are human.

      LOST FOUND LOL... my "naughty bucket" has several dozen locks in it. Some known nasty ones (MT5+, Ingersoll, BiLock, Medeco, etc.), but also some that should be pretty easy, yet are foiling me.

      And this is how I spent the last 4 hours of my life....
      So interestingly enough, I have a ABUS 83AL/45 that is zero bitted. That to say I hadn't messed with it yet as I don't have followers and such. So, sitting here bored I take the core out of it on a whim and low and behold it is the exact same core you have there. Yay for me! Having a bit of a cocky moment, I decided to go ahead and attempt to change the bitting as I do have some pins, just no followers or tweezers. So I drop all the pins but 1 and 2 and decide to put it back just to go slow and make sure I wasn't biting off more then I could chew. Any ideas on what I neglected to do? I neglected to remove the driver pins on the 3 through 5 (6 came empty). And I am sure you can figure out the rest. That was the longest and easily the most difficult pick of my short career here....
      Just thought you might want a laugh at my idiocy lol

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  8 років тому +3

      Feral Woodcraft Oh no! Hope you had a really deep hook to fix it!

    • @feralwoodcraft
      @feralwoodcraft 8 років тому +2

      Nope, I sure didn't. I ended up using a tension wrench from the rear of the core and coming in from the top to push pins 3-5 in place and picking 1&2 from the front. It took me a bit to work it out but I sure have learned hands on more how these things function. Excellent learning experience and a funny idiot moment in one lol
      As an aside, sometime when it fits into a video your filming, could you show how flipping that little Z shaped brass piece on the back of the core works? I've flipped it every which way and it either locks up the core or is still non retaining. Thanks again!

      This lock wasn't even the heaviest I've picked recently... that Kasp 19070X was a beast. Though the worst lock to pick in your hand I've even encountered is the Rotalok. Not only is it heavy, but it's oddly shaped and you need to hold the lock from rotating -- it's a serious PITA (particularly when you are trying to pick something nasty in it, like a Kaba 20!).

    I liked the 909090 cut of the key. I am tired of hearing/reading people saying the MACS for Schlage is like seven!
    I had an Ilco Mighty-Mite, one of the worst key machines ever, and I could make 909090 keys on it! I am not saying it was easy, but I got a ninety percent yield cutting them, and that ain’t bad! [Using the original RF23 cutting wheel.]
    The rule is: Learn the machine’s characteristics, then use them to full advantage! Actually, I use this principle everywhere!

      @lockpickinglawyer  8 років тому +7

      Thanks. On the titalium, make sure to keep tension pretty taut at the apex of counter rotation. That helps avoid dropping pins when you set spools, which is the trick to opening those locks. Good luck!

    The Rock! Heck its more like Gibraltar. For such a huge lock it was a "blast through", in terms of picking. Those drill resistant pins look awfully wide apart? I would like to see some carbide drills talking a crack at other pins such as those used on Medeco mortise cylinders.....any chance Lockmeister????
    Thanks for the video.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  8 років тому

      I suppose it's possible to thread the needle on those hardened inserts, but it would not be easy at all. Understand that most locksmiths will use a 1/4" minimum sized drill bit to take out a shear line to give themselves some "wiggle room." Clearly, that would not fit. You would have to use a barely big enough bit and drill PERFECTLY straight into a moving padlock. Not easy at all. As for me drilling locks (particularly ones with anti drill pins)... sorry, not my cup of tea.

  • @solitare4602

    Does Abus say it is CEN 6?
    From my understanding CEN 6 requires protected shoulders.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  8 років тому +8

      Hmm... 10 minutes ago, I would have said that I was sure... I would not have said it unless I read it somewhere authoritative. But I can't find anything now, and all indications are that it's CEN5 (with the 83CS/80 being CEN6). Thanks for pointing out my error. I'll change the video title.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  8 років тому

      Thanks. Don't wait too long to pull your lock out. It's just spools. Granted, pretty good tolerances so you will need to be careful not to drop pins when allowing counter rotation, but still just spools.

    HI LPL?, awesome picking ..
    nice extremely bitting on key..
    and i don't like rounded end of driver pins , its signnifically put down picking and key security,
    reason for that is bigger tolerance for keys cutted too low (bad duplication) i think.

    • @lockpickinglawyer

    do you have a different length security pin kit so you can make even stacks? that makes over setting a pin easy to do & toughen it up European style. I have different size serrated, assa & spool pins to make it bad ass if you need them. maybe the offset ASSA pins would be a good idea. I would try them all see what the best match is for those keypin sizes. let me know. I can send some out if you need em.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  8 років тому

      I do have several different size spool and serrated pins... not worth the trouble given the bitting I selected. And I'd rather keep the Abus factory pins.

  • @jasminelognnes989
    @jasminelognnes989 8 років тому +1

    How does zero bitting work? Do they expect you take the blanks and go to a lock smith and get them to cut the key on your request?
    And what about pins? I don't suppose they include extra pins that will work with any combination you choose.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  8 років тому +3

      A zero bitted lock comes keyed off of a key blank (with a bunch of really short key pins). What is expected is that someone will take it to a locksmith and have it keyed to their home key, or something like that. They do not come with extra pins, though it would be nice. I've only see one zero-bitted lock that came with a variety of key pins to allow the consumer to key their own lock. It was from Brinks, but I don't remember the model.

      Can the lock core in the ABUS 83/30 be changed out for something more secure like ABUS-Plus disk cylinder in the GRANIT 37/80? I'm trying to replace two differently keyed Kyptonite New York Disc Locks with something more secure but similarly keyed.
      As far as I can tell the 83/80 is one of the few that can take 2 links of 14mm chain inside the shackle. I'd rather just get the GRANIT 37/80 but it is obviously not big enough.
      Any recommendations?
