Probably, but it is a trope often seen, and I think something seen in old manuals as well. I suppose with training, there's a distance from which it becomes possible. But indeed it should be tested with a war bow (or equivalent), and not a 30 pound one, and I don't know in terms of safety what is feasible. But it would be interesting to see if it can work or not, from which distance, and obviously after quite some training at it (it would be a specific sub skill and untrained it would obviously not work).

I took kendo for around 6 years (not a master but not a novice) and a new student once asked if it was possible to deflect an arrow with a sword. Since our dojo had an archery team that plays archery tag after classes, we decided to test it out. We started at 150ish feet and we would shoot 10 arrows before closing 10ft at a time until we couldn't deflect it anymore. The bow used was a 45lb yumi. The distance possible to deflect for me was at least 80ft but it was still difficult since its hard to judge the distance from something so thin flying at 200+ft/s. Its alot easier to just dodge the arrow than timing the deflect.

People who do larp archery for a long time reload faster with those arrows, it's a matter of practice. Uou could see he was figuring out how to shoot a resisting target on the fly and did a good job of adjusting, but the heavy arrows don't stop people who shoot them constantly from hitting their targets. I'd say that at that distance, you can 100% get one hit, but I wouldn't say you are guaranteed to get 2/3 arrows in. Start walking forward and fire one from very start, he dodges, he rushes, you reload, he slows down as you draw again, you start walking towards him if he's outside a 100% hit range, if he goes forward wait for him to start moving forward, so he can't make a side dash, and fire. If he starts going backwards, fire right away without waiting, it will take him half a second to change direction, and if you miss you will still get a third arrow before he reaches you (when doing the latter make sure to be walking back as he changes his direction to start moving forward again). But you need practice at actual larp archery interaction for this to be easy. If you are not used to larp arrows/reloading on the move we will see what we saw here. The no shield melee weapon also was trying to figure it out, the way they usually do it, first wait for first arrow at max distance so you can dodge, (it's not easy but it's definitely doable with a little practice at that distance). Watch archer carefully, don't guess where he is going to shoot, only go sideways when the arrow is loose, if you start doing what the katana did here, it's too easy for a practiced archer to compensate for your movements. Run forward when reloading, you will have a second before next arrow, when running forward bend knees heavily to be able to go left/right easier and to present a smaller target, hold the sword/melee weapon directly Infront of you flat of the blade out, the archer subconsciously targets something, and the chances of his body mechanic reacting to the sword in the middle of your body as his target is high, even if in his mind he is thinking anything but NOT the sword. Tuck in arms elbows close to body to make urself smaller, head a bit tilted down to avoid being startled if the arrow flies close to your eyes. So generally this kind of a face off is a guaranteed archer victory, but it's all a matter of practice. It's always fun to watch when both sides are good at what they do. (They are both great here as archer/swordsman, they just don't understand yet how to make it work, and you see both parties figuring it out on the fly)
Never played Shogun 2, but in Shogun 1, Archers units were from Samurai caste, which not only meant they didn't break as easily, but they were also pretty good in melee.
shit thats exactly what happened in the US/Philippine war in 1911. We shot filipinos with things like 9mm and 38 in the trenches and they still kept running after shot and macheted to death our soldiers. the .45 caliber round was invented because of that experience. we needed something that would drop you immediately. otherwise, as with an arrow I suspect, the attacker would keep advancing even with the fatal wound inflicted and slash the shit out of the soldier. both would end up dying.

Hell in UFC and Boxing we see numerous examples of people willing to Tank hits, in order to have a higher chance to bring in a hit of their own and it works. It's why in my opinion Kendo and Fencing are probs the best-adjusted combat sport rules out of any of the mainstream ones. Cause in most cases you can argue if it was a fight to the death, the winner of the match, would definitely win in a no rules all bars removed match. While in other weapon combat sports in my opinion leave much more room for argument.
You know real archers (at least in old times) reloads at least 5 times faster than this, there are some who shoots more than one arrow as well. Also I know since u can't test this with a real arrow u had to use that slow arrow but normal arrow would be a lot faster. I don't think katana guy has any chance unless he uses shield or some armor. (Not all armors stop arrow tho) (I realized I used arrow instead of bow because in our language arrow means both arrow and the bow even tho there are seperate words for that -Turkic-)
@J M Arrows are not like 9mm bullets, they have way more stopping force. No way a guy can run and kill you after getting shot with arrow. And you should consider that real archer would shot him at least 3 times before he reaches the archer, also even if he reaches real archers used to carry small melee weapons as well so katana boy literally has %1 chance.
You honestly both have points. It is possible the sword guy would manage a double kill. But then, archers generally had swords too... so it's largely an unfair contest if the sword guy doesn't have extra armour. Generally archers would retreat if possible at this sort of close range, because there's a lot of damage of the enemy surviving their arrows. Specifically, if even one swordsmen gets through unscathed while the archers keep shooting, he can cut down many archers.
@J M Ancient archers were also usually equipped with short swords or short spears, and there were other soldiers around to protect them, being approached did not mean they would be killed
I highly recommend using a practice katana for experiments like these next time. I know it's a light fun experiment and not to be taken too seriously. But even if that katana is dull the tip is still highly dangerous. Like for example: the attacker lost balance and hit someone by accident in a panic mode. Be careful & stay safe.
Strongly imho... ^_^ The situation seems a bit incorrect in relation to kendoka, because he runs towards the archer along a narrow corridor, which decrease a sector of fire for an archer and a field for maneuver for a swordsman. Therefore, the archer is in a stronger position from the beginning, imho. After experiment we can see clearly, that the most effective engagement distance (for 1vs1 duelling, of course) is the one when a swordsman is closest to a archer, which narrows the field of fast maneuver, but in the same time increases the danger for the archer to be hit, because an arrow in real life does not kill instantly and has a slight stopping effect, especially if swordsman is skilled and not be shocked by arrow's hit. Therefore, even if wounded, the swordsman will be able to make a critical hit to the archer. Keeping distance is critical for an archer. Also, we've to keep in mind that the main strength of the archers is not a sniper shooting (even if we dreams about Mr. Hood or Mr.Tell glory), but the mass character of volley of a dense formation of many archers. In any case, I really enjoy watching your channel, and one of the main reasons, besides the skill of the guys, is the sincere pleasure and laughter with which they making fights, so looking at you guys, I'm starting to smile by myself. ^_^ b Keep it up!
Also thinking the same. Without any sidearm, can't the archer use his arrows as puncture weapon or distraction? But perhaps it's due to increase in distance, even a bit, with a bow, and that they are more proficient with it than hand to hand so they have better chance on hitting with shooting the arrows rather than holding them even in CQC.

Actually, there's a less commonly recognized facet about archers of the old: They are actually really strong. Very often the Elites! The reason is ancient war bows have much greater draw weight in order to be sufficiently powerful due to technological limitations. Therefore, Archers are often the biggest, strongest soldiers who are also very often the calmest and most calculative in an army - In other words, they are bigger, stronger, faster and smarter than regular infantry. Moreover, I cannot speak for European Archers, but Chinese Archers are often armed with melee weapons and participates in battle with the infantry. If you think about it, there's only a limited number of volley archer battalion can release before armies goes into melee! Imagine how stupid it is, two armies, each about 5000 soldiers. One side all Infantry and cavalry, one side has 1000 archers in addition to infantry and cavalry and after firing 2-3 volleys of arrows, you get 1000 deadweights? No, unlike in games and media, historically archers should be clad in armor and weapons the same as the infantrymen who will switch to their melee weapons and help their infantry guys. In fact, they are likely to be the biggest, meanest, hulking brutes that towers over the poor scrawny little Infantry twerps quivering in a corner as the Horrendous, evil Big mean Archer monster bigot closes in to have theri way with... okay, enough demonizing archers. They are probably just as strong and well equipped for melee in the past.
I think it depends on country and culture, I think in Chinese, Persian, Assyrian empires in places like Russia, Japan and Turkey that was surely the case, where an archer was the elite. But in countries where archery was massively adopted by the population I think that was not the case, I don't think a mongol horse archer or an english bowman were elites in their armies, I think they were far inferior to bogaturs and men at arms/knights, heavy charge cav. In a culture where everyone has a bow, being a Bowman is not prestigious. In a countries like China or Turkey (Ottoman/Seljuk empires) where bows were expensive works of military art and engineering, it's only logical to see them handed to the elite.

@ I'm not trying to say that elites of warrior cultures like mongols/joseons/England were not expert archers, I am saying that in those cultures being a dedicated archer did not make you a part of the elite. Like being an archer in what we call ancient Mongolia, would make you an average member of an average arban. Enlisting was easy, the natural training they got with hunting and living nomadic was sufficient to be super effective. Whereas in the same China archery was an elites business, I mean even non military high ranking members of the society had to pass a bow exam before being allowed to administer to a higher position. In china your average ranged infantry man would be armed with a handcannon or a crossbow, an army bowman in china would literally be an analogue of a modern Spec Ops unit, armoured, trained and generally a scary guy. (I know I'm generalizing, but just trying to capture the gist of the differences in what I mean when I say elite). So on one hand you have Mongolian bogaturs, who were of course amazing archers, but they were not elite because they were archers, and on the other hand you have a Song dynasty military Bowman, who was the elite because he was a Bowman. (just taking same period countries for examples sake). I hope I managed to clarify my meaning, not trying to say any cultures archers were bad, just pointing out different positions and importance of archery and archer warriors in society.

English archers were not social elites, they were peasants. Cavalry were made up of elites who would have had access to much better armour and military training etc. HOWEVER English archers were physically very powerful, as the longbow required a great deal of strength to span, and would certainly have been formidable (if perhaps poorly armoured/trained) in close quarters with side arms.
bro nothing is more annoying then playing a ARPG, and you just get randomly sniped by a archer or a mage. RPG gaming rule 1, always fucking kill the range units before melee if the opportunity presents itself.
Dont mean to disrespect, but that video should be called: "can one dodge an arrow on close range". More specifically: A very low powered bow with extremely heavy arrows. Its a fun challange but has no meaning to answer the question of the title. 1) Because the speed of those arrows does not remotely compare to the speed of arrows of medieval warbows. Be it european or asian. 2) Because why would the archer have no means of running away? If i was the archer i would shoot and run. And most likely outrun the swordsman because he is wearing armor. Late medieval japanese "samurai armor" also weight up to 20kg or even more. It was very well designed armor, but 20kg is 20kg. its gonna make you slower. 3) Because why would that contest start on like 10(?) meters. why wouldnt it be 50? But again, fun little challange.
I think the archer is way too slow and not properly trained, historical accurate archery is very different from modern archery, they're a lot faster and still precise, they would carry their bow in their hand if they're in motion, watch lars anderson for great example.

Not the best bow for this. A traditional Japanese bow would have been best, and the fact he shoots right over the bow than the left. Just slows him down. IRL the katana guy gets shot four times in each attempt. Not to be rude they both did good.

No, unlike in games and media, historically archers should be clad in armor and weapons the same as the infantrymen who will switch to their melee weapons and help their infantry guys. In fact, they are likely to be the biggest, meanest, hulking brutes that towers over the poor scrawny little Infantry twerps quivering in a corner as the Horrendous, evil Big mean Archer monster bigot closes in to have theri way with... okay, enough demonizing archers. They are probably just as strong and well equipped for melee in the past.
I think it depends on country and culture, I think in Chinese, Persian, Assyrian empires in places like Russia, Japan and Turkey that was surely the case, where an archer was the elite. But in countries where archery was massively adopted by the population I think that was not the case, I don't think a mongol horse archer or an english bowman were elites in their armies, I think they were far inferior to bogaturs and men at arms/knights, heavy charge cav. In a culture where everyone has a bow, being a Bowman is not prestigious. In a countries like China or Turkey (Ottoman/Seljuk empires) where bows were expensive works of military art and engineering, it's only logical to see them handed to the elite.

@ I'm not trying to say that elites of warrior cultures like mongols/joseons/England were not expert archers, I am saying that in those cultures being a dedicated archer did not make you a part of the elite. Like being an archer in what we call ancient Mongolia, would make you an average member of an average arban. Enlisting was easy, the natural training they got with hunting and living nomadic was sufficient to be super effective. Whereas in the same China archery was an elites business, I mean even non military high ranking members of the society had to pass a bow exam before being allowed to administer to a higher position. In china your average ranged infantry man would be armed with a handcannon or a crossbow, an army bowman in china would literally be an analogue of a modern Spec Ops unit, armoured, trained and generally a scary guy. (I know I'm generalizing, but just trying to capture the gist of the differences in what I mean when I say elite). So on one hand you have Mongolian bogaturs, who were of course amazing archers, but they were not elite because they were archers, and on the other hand you have a Song dynasty military Bowman, who was the elite because he was a Bowman. (just taking same period countries for examples sake). I hope I managed to clarify my meaning, not trying to say any cultures archers were bad, just pointing out different positions and importance of archery and archer warriors in society.

English archers were not social elites, they were peasants. Cavalry were made up of elites who would have had access to much better armour and military training etc. HOWEVER English archers were physically very powerful, as the longbow required a great deal of strength to span, and would certainly have been formidable (if perhaps poorly armoured/trained) in close quarters with side arms.
That's why I always take out the archer first in every battle game.

Dont mean to disrespect, but that video should be called: "can one dodge an arrow on close range".
More specifically: A very low powered bow with extremely heavy arrows.
Its a fun challange but has no meaning to answer the question of the title.
1) Because the speed of those arrows does not remotely compare to the speed of arrows of medieval warbows. Be it european or asian.
2) Because why would the archer have no means of running away? If i was the archer i would shoot and run. And most likely outrun the swordsman because he is wearing armor. Late medieval japanese "samurai armor" also weight up to 20kg or even more. It was very well designed armor, but 20kg is 20kg. its gonna make you slower.
3) Because why would that contest start on like 10(?) meters. why wouldnt it be 50?
But again, fun little challange.
I think the archer is way too slow and not properly trained, historical accurate archery is very different from modern archery, they're a lot faster and still precise, they would carry their bow in their hand if they're in motion, watch lars anderson for great example.

Not the best bow for this. A traditional Japanese bow would have been best, and the fact he shoots right over the bow than the left. Just slows him down. IRL the katana guy gets shot four times in each attempt. Not to be rude they both did good.

YOU HAVE THE WRONG AND IRELVANT ARCHERY STYLE. YOU ARE USING TARGET SPORT ARCHERY. WITH A DIFFERENT TECHIQUE AND BOW SET UP, THE KATANA WOULD HAVE NO CHANCE, UNLESS HE HAD GOOD ARMOR, but even armor has weaknesses
@J M it depends where they hit. in war in old days, u would prob get hit by broad heads that create wide wounds for extreme bleeding out. arrows from heavy bows go through bones
