Unsuccessfully, the people of Israel rebelled against the rule of the Babylonian king Nabucco and were resettled on the banks of the Euphrates. In their "Babylonian imprisonment", the Israelites dream of their homeland and long for their return.

Truly marvelous how a chorus of thirty or more voices can still be so somber and subdued. When you think of an operatic chorus you normally think of a climactic, grand piece (like Hallelujah - Handel), yet Verdi masterfully blends "big" with "somber"
