    This video and song is one of my favorites by him because of social consciousness and relevance of the song in its time and it still holds up today. I think the acoustic musicianship, straight forward approach to the video highlights Jesse as an artist and helps deliver the relevant message.

    This song is so truthful to this day.I wish Black Artists today can make songs as positive as this one instead of all the garbage that's degrading our kind.The sad part is that Black radio is condoning it.

    As the poster of this great video by Jesse J., I would like to thank all of you for your comments. Aracadianmaximus ... you hit it right on the head. I felt strongly about posting this video on UA-cam because when I originally searched Jesse J. I did not find it. Now there are a couple of great versions including a "Live" version from BET back in the day.

    A rare postion in music today! It is slowly creeping up upon our society. Music use to be a form of saying something not necessarily just a beat. We are being stricken to think, create, even express our different gifts, our true calling throgh music.

    • @combatgirl38
      @combatgirl38 6 років тому

      That is the beauty of music, though. Its expression can't be taken away. Your comment is 4 years old and today in 2018 I don't think that the Disney auto-tuned R&B/rap yuck that is happening right now could get WORSE. But keeping that in mind-just imagine the counter culture going on underground! I live in Minneapolis and quit going out years ago, but that thought alone has sprung new intrigue.

    @breaknbeat uh, if you are black you are going to have a black child, no matter the race of the other parent. That child will be seen as black. And if you are black, you can shout about "black this black that" if you don't have a black spouse and live in a white neighborhood, because YOU (in this case Jesse) are black have experienced life as a black man. So he has as much right to talk about being black in America as Malcolm X or any other African American.

    I first saw this vidwo in ,87. I thought and still think the girls are gorgeous. I like the song because of it's simplicity, guitar and tamborines. I love the guitar. If I could play a guitar, I would play this song. I saw him play this on video soul the same year I did not like that performance too much (because he did not have the girls and played an electric guitar). Studio recording iwas better.

    Lenny Kravitz was already making music himself when Johnson went on his solo career. I like this song, but he really wasn't saying anything about being black in America. He started out this song singing about his bad ass car!

    • @chrisa4695
      @chrisa4695 4 роки тому

      You lol at me. You look at my car. People TRY to tell me that I’m a star. To there’s no such thing. If you listen to the lyrics the song is about chasing your dreams inspire of oppression.

      The production value is similar, for sure... But beyond that, not really... I mean, other than the fact that they're both a singer, an acoustic guitar, two female backup singers and a song about peace...

    • @combatgirl38

      If you research you will see that Jesse Johnson worked with The Time (wrote Jungle Love!!!) under Prince but broke off on his own because Prince did not allow ANY kind of creative freedom. It was a very bad scene for most of the musicians working For, not With him at that time. Jesse worked very hard at trying to remain diplomatic toward Prince while fielding questions about it. I don't blame Prince either, he knew what he wanted and those who agreed were able to stick around. I don't think it's fair that he pulled The Time off of shows constantly at the last second while they were on tour, or made them back Vanity 6 behind a screen if they did want a chance to play-but I wasn't there to say what actually is factual. I only know what I've seen in interviews. Jesse Johnson is still active in 2018 and is an incredibly talented man who came here to Minneapolis to make a name for himself as just a kid. Check out 'I Want My Girl' if you aren't familiar with some of his best early works!

    • @michaelmiller44820

      Jesse Johnson, The Time, Prince, all that... That's what I grew up on... That's what I'm still listening to most days... These guys were all such great musicians... I'm so glad I was a teenager during the 80s... This music was amazing, and a lot of it still holds up today...
