INEOS Britannia Let RB3 Loose | May 4th | America's Cup

  • The story of the day, and one that has really set tongues wagging in Barcelona is the sheer performance of INEOS Britannia who, for the first time, let it rip downwind on a huge 10 mile run and at a truly astonishing pace. The commissioning of RB3 is going well and today was the moment to show its potential with Sir Ben Ainslie and Dylan Fletcher-Scott starting to sail the boat supremely smoothly and with growing confidence in the platform. Ben has been rightly cautious and methodical in the approach to commissioning, writing at length in the British media about the process and the team’s approach. Today it paid handsome dividends.

Lots of arm chair stuff in comments. Don't knock it till you know it. We will find out when they line up. Some bright people involved, they might get it right or wrong, but they are having a go at probably one of the hardest cups to win in sport. I do have ideas as to there cup might go but you never know in this game, good luck to all of the teams brave enough to fight this crazy game out.

The gybe looked smooth and given it’s designed to be an ultra high performance, ergo responsive, yacht/machine, the feel will develop. Too early to judge any of them yet.

Interesting that we all watch the same footage and see different things. I thought it looks fast. A bit ragged at the moment but it's only day 3 and the first time they sailed downwind (40+ knots not bad) and I'd rather they were holding on tight while trying to tame a wild horse than trying to work out how to make am arm chair go faster.
I might be wrong and we'll only know how they compare when we start seeing the other boats sailing near each other.
I'm also glad they have gone and designed their own boat rather than build a version of New Zealand's, as the danger of doing that is that every time the Kiwis's will be one iteration of refinement ahead.

I've seen a couple of analysts claim that Ineos have taken a gamble by moving the centre of gravity farther forward than the other contenders. Apparently this offers potential performance at the cost of controllability. So the key will be learning to fly the thing. If they can master that, they might just be in the game. Looked a bit better here, despite the conditions, so let's hope they're on the right track.

  • @lazios

Said I hope it will be slow (it would be a rival less), I read, profane opinion (sorry, I don't know if this expression makes sense in English), too much criticism; I understand the disappointment for the last edition but I think it's really too early to make any judgments.
Even they don't know how fast can (really) go, the sailing experts don't know, let alone us fans/spectators. 🍺

The boat starts to sail with a bit of bow up and the rudder appears straighter? Would love to have gotten a side profile shot.

Seems that with the boayancy forward they can angle up and aid getting onto foils, and then once up adjust the rudder again to produce the downforce and righting moment, once they get these combinations in sync with each other it has the greater potential

Honestly, that self deprecation tone and delivery is really grating.. it’s a theme of this campaign.. setting themselves up for failure again.
They’ve got the marketing/comms resource so it’s not like they’re short of talent. Let’s have someone who can talk and deliver to an audience in front of the camera, instead of sentences filled with awkward gaps, pregnant pauses and “um’s and ahhh’s” 🤫

They have to send someone out for interview every day. Fair that the guys in the boat don't want to be the ones that do it every time. This piece of content will be irrelevant tomorrow when there is a new one. I thought he answered the questions put to him...

The reporter was really annoying. Clearly didn't have any depth of knowledge. Questions were basic that even I, as an armchair sailor, could answer.

Based on early footage from the first 4 boats now on the water. This boat is dead last. If you think otherwise, you are a blind fanboy!

Folks only mock something they want to put down but its does not change the fact that this boat is undeniably very fast after a mere 3 days of sailing and can only get even faster

I'm a Kiwi, and although it doesn't look perfect at the moment, I am quietly worried about this boat. It's so different from the other boats so far and I do wonder if once they have the hang of it, it may just be very very fast. My gut tells me this boat is flown differently to the rest and therefore they are learning a completely new technique, hence a bit wobbly. Watch this space.

Your spot on this boat is going to make a lot of posters on here eat their words
