Loved this for nearly 40 years,i listen to it when I'm feeling down ,it lifts my spirits.... only problem is I have to listen to it every fxxxxxx night, lately 😂😂😂😂😂... WORLD SHUT YOUR MOUTH!!!
What happened to this song? I taped it from the radio in college in the 80s.. I’d forgotten about it bec I never heard it played on the radio! Fun song ❤
From the "Saint Julian" LP. Badass album, and a badass single. Thank you Julian Cope for penning one of my favorite songs ever. That it's relevant in 2024 is astonishing. One track that will never get old.
I loved this song the first time I heard it. I was fortunate enough to get tickets next to the stage when Julian toured with Siouxsie and the Banshee. Both bands were great and it remains one of the best concerts I've ever seen.
I graduated high school in 86 and I remember watching an interview with him where he was asked what he'd like to be in life, what would satisfy him. I remember like it was yesterday he said he just wanted to be amused. Not happy, not rich, not in love. Amused. At the time I thought that was the worst thing I'd ever heard. I thought if I ever got that cynical you could just kill me. And now? I'd like to just remain amused. Thanks Julian.
Reminds me of an anonymous quote from the ancient Greeks that's become my personal motto. I paraphrase: _"There are three kinds of people in the world, just as there are three kinds of people who go to the Olympic Games:_ _The Lowest are there to sell._ _The Middle are there to compete._ _And the Highest are there to sit and watch."_
And to think his music teacher told Julian to not be stupid when he said he was going to be a rock star. Sister was at school with him, regularly used to visit when he was in the UK. Mom was given one of the gold / blue picture disc copies of Saint Julian. was #4 of 1000
Sometimes out of the blue, a song that u loved comes to mind. A vinyl I have collecting dust but treasured. Bought it at the time of release. Over the last few days a constant urge to hear it again I couldn't shake. I know now why so. Still a great standout track. Love it now like I loved it then. Thanks Cope for a gem.
Where did you see him? I saw him around the same time in Liverpool Uni. It was the hottest gig I've ever been to but also one of the best. Happy days indeed.
Hadn't heard this in years, and for some odd reason it popped into my head today (along with Try Try Try) and I gotta say that for a song to pop into my head after several decades of not even hearing it, is a testament to how powerful this is as a song. I miss the 80's! Thanks Julian for making my teen years exciting, and then reminding me what a great fucking singer you are too!
Saw him in 92 in Birmingham. To this day, still one of the best shows I've ever seen. His rapport with the crowd was incredible. The rest of the band were fantastic too.
Saw him live at Cardiff with this line up Crazyhead were supporting him. The Atmosphere was incredible...The fact I got beat up on the way home, in no way put a dampener on one of the best gigs I've seen.
Lol cool story Steven love you boss any man who's a Julian cope fan is cool in my book. ..fuck the new world order if you ever in Cheshire England give me a shout i will buy you a beer. ..you have a lovely day steven and give my love to you're friends and family. ..x
I always thought this was a Kinks tune, really outstanding. I found out it was a Cope song when he opened for Siouxsie and the Banshees at DAR in DC...great shows
Amazing singer /songwriter! Great Voice and brilliant frontman! Should have been the new 'Mick Jagger' (and he is better looking!) Brilliant! More please Julian! dx
Out of nowhere this song jumped into my head, I was 10 years old when it came out and never particularly liked it, it's fine but where did it cone from today?? I'm going senile
When I started work at 18, there was the production manager Dennis Stanley who spoke far too loudly on the radios. So whenever this came on the radio, the new lyrics went: "Dennis, shut your mouth, shut your mouth, put your walkie talkie down and shut your mouth!" :-D
There was plenty of other songs from the 80's that were ahead of their time, from the likes of: The Cure, The Smiths, Big Country, The Housemartins.....etc
@@mikekaraoke Sorry about that, I was watching a TE video from 1981 and scrolled down to the comments, the ad was playing so I didn't realize youtube had jumped automatically to this video.
Seen him use it in concert too! Suited him - and the lyrics of many songs on his brilliant album SAINT JULIAN were about how he had a big erection! But he did it with class and wit and style!!!!
I gather that Cope didn’t remain fond of the pop tunes he released in the 1986-87 timeframe. But songs like “World Shut Your Mouth,” “Trampoline,” and “Charlotte Anne” are the only part of his oeuvre that I can listen to on a regular basis.
not to mention his splendid book the modern Antiquarian. I ordered a copy and received it with mostly blank pages, to this day I regret I sent it back for a fully printed version, kind of wish I had completed it my self
I met God in a car, in a dream, in Ankerside And I was very unkind I said, "You locked us out of the forest And gave us a mind . I came upon you when I thought I'd lost you And I cried, 'My God, I thought I'd lost you! Lost you! Lost you!'" He said, "My mind is overflowing With tales to tell I've been looking around this world I created It's going so well!" I looked, I stared, I said, "I think I've lost you!" Cried out, "My God, I think I've lost you! Lost you! Lost you!" I stared into your face, the waves deep and strong Your fall from grace -- a god so far gone Remind me not to pray to you Then my flailing arms smacked your face Why shouldn't I kill you? I thought of all the bodies, the religious wars And all of the millions dying for a nobody cause Sitting in an 8-foot by 8-foot cell, I cried "You know this treatment isn't human!" Up to my waist in the slime and the sweat of days I hope that I am not forgotten I came upon you when I thought I'd lost you And I cried, "My God, I know I've lost you! Lost you! Lost you! Know I've lost you Lost you. Lost you."
@@arthegon The 'Ankerside' mentioned in the lyrics is a nod to the Ankerside shopping centre in Tamworth UK which was the main town near to where he lived in Drayton Basset. The scrap yard on front of Saint Julian was only half a mile from where I lived

Julian Cope = GENIUS!!!

And let’s not ignore the greatest mic stand in history.
I remember that being made.

Ian Anderson could do it all without a mic stand
It had been done before.Devoto?
Of course!! lol Such a good song...you hear the melody in the chorus in so many songs even today.
"IF" you, or more especially today your child is being Cyber bullied, get them to listen to this song!
Or don't go on the net, no bullying if it doesn't exist ;)
I’m still listening to this song in 23/11/24
One of the joys of the British New Wave was Julian Cope. Music like Julian Cope never gets old.
An oddity is that his debut solo album from 1983/84 had the same name as this song but this song didn't appear until 1986.
Everyone in the World today, needs to hear this song, and do what the title says. Great track....more relevant today, then back in those great days.
Saw Julian many, many times, a true underrated genius, and then theres that mic stand... glorious days.
Needed to hear this this morning. Sick of this cruel, phoney, idiot world. The people not the earth.
🎉
this was played heaps in BBC Tv Show called The A word
Saw him play this at Glasto in 1986, brillllllliant.
Julian was one of the nicest guys I had the pleasure of driving around in my taxi back in the day . Happy Days!

30 years later and this track is even more valid!
Ahead of its time ...
Never a truer word said!

This song is amazing! And written so long ago but is so appropriate in terms of the mess politicians are making of the world we live in!!

He tended to destroy mic stands. He once asked for an idestructable one and got one similar. I guess this type stuck
