  • It’s parts of a whole, it’s flashes of brilliance, it’s fracturing space, time, reality, and narrative for the sake of the abstract. It’s a montage, and we’re bringing you our top 10 in movie history! Subscribe: goo.gl/9AGRm
    What did you think of the list? Do you disagree with any of our picks? Feel like we left out or mis-represented any of the scenes? What do you think are the best movie montages? What makes them so great?

    THE LIST
    Up - Married Life
    This sweet look at Carl and Ellie’s married life pulls at our heartstrings and makes us understand and support Carl even though he seems to have forgotten what it means to be happy.
    Rushmore - Yearbook
    Wes Anderson is able to tell us everything we need to know about Max with a perfect mix of childishness and seriousness.
    Rocky IV - Training
    The way the months of training are compressed into a few brilliant minutes and the way it displays the contrasting training methods of Rocky and Drago make this the obvious choice.
    Donnie Darko - Mad World Timeline Collapse
    Somehow able to make something so WTF fill us with emotion and make us understand how tragic it all is.
    Cinema Paradiso - Kissing
    It’s a meta analysis of the power of cinema, romancing us as it examines romance.
    Citizen Kane - Breakfast Table
    In a few brief moments we are told the story of a beautiful love turned cold over the course of years.
    The 25th Hour - F*&K YOU
    Spike Lee shows us the honesty of a deeply racist character in post 9-11 New York.
    I Wish - Poetry in the Details
    A look at the beauty of the little things we usually just pass by in our daily life.
    American Beauty - Dying Moments
    It perfectly alternates between the beauty of a life in retrospect and the pain of those left behind in a mix of calm and chaos.
    The Godfather - Baptism
    Birth in Christ vs death without him showing us Michael’s bad faith pledge on his soul to underline how his character has changed.

    I love how the Godfather's baptism montage alternates between Michael becoming a Godfather with the baptism of his godchild and symbolizing becoming THE Godfather with the cross section clips of the gang violence murders. Flawless.

      @Hector Salamanca Sir, you chose the perfect film. After all these years, the perfection of that editing brings tears of
      viewing the medium at it's zenith!
      May I add one more wee bit of editing genius that, for me, is arguably the finest just over 1 second of quick cuts in the history of film.
      I am speaking of the Don and his son Sonny and his two Capos and of course his Consigliere Tom,meeting with Virgil (The Turk) Sollozzo.
      When Sonny shows there's a weak point to be exploited, that 2 second historic bit of quick cut editing conveyed what a page of writing would usually require.
      I beg your pardon as I know the subject is montage rather than editing or camera shots but I can't resist: When Michael pops up quietly with, "We can't wait." And as he speaks that famous monologue the camera CREEPS so that we finally see Michael, suddenly with the bearing of a Don, filling the frame.

      +Victor Dalloz Agreed, i've been in campaing against their sloppy tops for... 6 or 7 months now? To no avail, but it does let me vent my frustration.
      But I don't think they can make something as good as this; I mean, can you imagine them doing a top 10 cinema movements of all time?
      Or something as well constructed as this?
      I just wish they made a better research on their tops, and made them more content and less cuts.
      Anyway, I ranted too much. LLAP.

      Michael Matt
      Not exactly, what they did is lower the quality in favor of lower production times/costs; Making several cuts in a single video makes easier for the voice talent to do their job, One phrase will take 2 or 3 tries at most, making the job easier for them, and in turn lowering the production costs. IF they cared about cuantity alone, they would have kept (sorry if the construction is wrong) releasing 5 to 6 videos per day.

    My favorite montage is from The Room when Johnny and Mark are running together and toss a football around as they talk about things. The genius in this scene is that the conversation we hear isn't clear leaving up to interpretation but the music does give us the sense that even though they have dark secrets they're both acting happy despite what's hidden under the surface.

  • @kmiller15211
    @kmiller15211 8 років тому +132

    You're a writer. You're told, in an animated format, to write a montage of the entirety of a life from marriage to grave. Show that they're madly in love. Show that the woman is outgoing and fun, while the man is stodgy and isolated. Depict that the daily grind of life is constantly getting in the way of their much more exotic dreams. Along the way, show the excitement of a child, only to lose that child. Then, show the woman dying, leaving the man completely alone. Make it absolutely heartbreaking. Oh, and do it without a single spoken word of dialogue.
    Yeah, Up should probably be #1. An unreal amount of information and feeling compacted into a few minutes.

      +Peter Hutt-Sierra what is a montage. i thought it was same as editing...

    • @june.bubbles
      @june.bubbles 8 років тому

      +hobidolap a Montage is where linear editing cuts out for a scene that is spliced up out of many shots, over a longer period of time than the montage takes. (Usually to music)
      So basically, instead of showing action one second at a time, a 2 minute montage shows something that happens over a longer period of time (longer than 2 minutes).
      I'm not a film expert so that's just my take on it. Anyone feel free to correct me.

    • @mKruter
      @mKruter 8 років тому

      +J. Haller Productions "a scene that is spliced up out of many shots, over a longer period of time than the montage takes." Wouldn't that also be the definition of every movie?

    • @june.bubbles
      @june.bubbles 8 років тому

      M Kruter yeah I guess so but usually individual scenes are in real time with time passing between them. When more time passes than is shown in a scene, that is what I would call a montage

    Dave Bowmans conception, development, and eventual death and rebirth into the star child in 2001: A Space Odyssey has to be noted. It's one of the most intruiging scenes in all of cinema, and just by the way it's shot, it creates suspense and a beautiful scale of time and space with its slow-burn transformation.

    +CineFix honestly, if you did the mention of Up among several examples and then chose something else... I'd have lost respect for this channel. You guys chose Up, you didn't pick something more obscure. You fucking chose Up. That was the right god damn move.

      It's subjective, and I am more appreciative of the obscure, or at least movies I hadn't seen/thought of in a certain way. Otherwise it's just a circlejerk.

    This was one of my favorite videos from your channel yet. With the subject, I thought for sure you would blast too fast with it, but the pace was great, and you recognized "Up", which could have been #2 or even #1... but you got it on there so I am happy. not that anyone cares but I am a customer, sort of.
    You also mentioned the Voight-Kampf test, AND Cinema Paradiso's montage so this is extremely fulfilling. I've been singing the praises of Cinema Paradiso since it came out, and watched as it faded quickly from the mass public interest within a couple years of its debut. The montage at the end, if it does not leave you with losing control of your eyes, you're just an ass hole. It's one of the most heartbreaking yet pleasing moments ever made in film.

    Could someone please explain the meaning of the word "Gestalt" here? I'm german and while the german meaning seems to be similiar - I don't think its the same.
    In german it means:
    shape, form of something - a rock can have the Gestalt of a person which would mean it looks similiar to a person (but not Mt Rushmore similiar) but it also can describe the shape of something abstract, a piece of art, an argument, a form of a society - I have the feeling Gestalt isn't used in such a wide context in english.

    • @jonathanpinera8452

      It's means an organized whole

    • @sansalvatore6869

      Gestalt is the name of a psychologist whose major contribution was his thoughts on how even with small pieces of something shown to a person, their mind manages to comprehend the entirety of it. My psychology teacher described it by picking up a chair and telling us to focus on the leg, and even though the leg of the chair is a piece on its own, we see it as a part of the chair. Basically it's about seeing things as whole entities rather than just the parts making up the whole.
      I hope that helped you.

      Gestalt is the name of a principle in psychology created in Berlin which says that the human mind looks for and finds a way to create a whole out of chaotic information.

      +bloodySunday77 Hmmm cause it's not a montage?

    • @bloodySunday77

      What do you mean? It's literally the definition of montage as a "production of a rapid succession of images in a motion picture". There is a big misconception that it concerns only a series of events through time, but this is wrong. One of its types is quick "metric" editing, as defined by Eisenstein, and it's that type that is being seen at the shower scene. More details online and at the "Psycho in the Shower: The History of Cinema's Most Famous Scene" book by Philip J. Skerry.

      Even if you do classify that as a montage, it doesn't deserve #1 spot, like 5 and above maybe. The Godfather baptism montage is like not even close any of the others, it is without a doubt #1.
