There are just a few things that stop the ear player from reaching their goals. The main two are knowing immediately five octaves on paper and timing. I think these are gold. My ear picks it up but the more It read the better we get it. The best.
Thank you Mr. David Magyel. What a beautiful tutorial of AUTUMN LEAVES. Very transparent and easy to follow The different steps have to be practiced step by step according to the level. Thank you again. Very inspirational stuff. Take care. Muchos gracias y muchos abrazos musicales desde España❤🎹❤
THank you so much. This is exactly what I need. Did the baby classical stuff and can read, but never learnt how to put an accompaniment to a tune. Going off to practice now, but I'll be back.
I Agree learning the tune will make it easier great job I want to learn this tune. to master jazz to be a scholar but one must make baby steps then walk then run then sometimes you have to crawl again
When I play a new tune I also arpeggiate the 1-5 as you did. However, if it's say, a C chord for the entire bar, then I play LH C-G-C-G on beats 1234 Is this still a two feel since it's not a walking bassline? Or would I have to play C-G on Beats 1 and 3? Also, why is the 2 feel a good way to go about learning a new piece?
Terrific piece and great tutorial with masterful pedagogy! May I ask who the composer and lyricist is and what is a feel base? This is my first Jazz piece- my background is classical. I enjoy this song's melody, what are the lyrics like and how does one play this by ear? Thank you for providing the score. I really like your advice to play the music out that is within us and when we are uninspired play from the music score-excellent advice. I will diligently study this song with you and can't wait until tomorrow to learn the scales associated with this song. Thank You for freely sharing with us:)
You have great content, but please respond to the questions people ask. It's the correct way to show people that you care. If you are too busy, it's a good idea to get moderators to help. We all need to feel that we are being heard, just as you do. Take care.
My friend, I hear you and what you say is true. I love to dedicate all my time to creating new piano lessons and I know that the downside of this creative work is that I am very slow at replying to messages. I can just hope that in the end, my lessons can make up for the lack of my social engagements. When it comes to moderators I don't think I want that... when I say thank you, or anything else, I want you to know that it comes from me. However, as an alternative solution to this problem, I have a website where you can contact us and we get in touch with you within a few days. Take care.
good stuff! I usually go straight to melody then voicings left hand, but I see what you mean by this! this way we understand better the sound of the melody with the root of the cords, and with more complex voicings it's a bit harder to understand that! The reason I do this way is because I have so little time to practice everyday and want to go straight to the advanced stuff, but with time I've come to the conclusion that the basics are very well spent time, and not a waste of time :) thanks for the video, an inspiration for me! btw I have one request, can you make a how to learn with a different song? because I believe the step 5 works well with autumn leaves, but I believe we must adapt for other songs :) Godspeed!
wow, thanks for this basic lesson in (jazz) music, and for the amazing bill evans documentary link. i am learning to play 'autum leaves' on chromatic harmonica and you really helped me a lot, on several levels.
Why are you playing this tune so happy and jolly? This is one of the saddest songs every written and you're making it sound like Dancing in the Rain vibes... cmon...
You are so funny. "I didn't know what I was doing", "but my ego was happy", haha, brilliant things to say! Thanks David, you have given me 'hope'...
