Triple Play: 3 Ohio Star Quilts with Jenny Doan of Missouri Star (Video Tutorial)

- We have a new tradition here at Missouri Star: Triple Play! Once a month, Jenny, Misty, and Natalie each demonstrate their own, unique take on a favorite block, technique, or template. This week these talented Doan ladies are showing off three Ohio Star quilt projects, and they are all quick, easy and "sew" pretty!
Jenny's Ohio Star Celebration is made with 5" square of precut fabric (charms). She used Silverstone Metallic Charm Packs by Wishwell for Robert Kaufman. This adorable project is made unique with sashing cornerstones that create a secondary block. (And you know Jenny, she just had to whip up a 2nd project: a table runner that looks totally different with the simple addition of an extra snowballed corner!) Jenny's blocks are trimmed and squared easily with the Clearly Perfect Slotted Trimmers by Kari Carr for New Leaf Stitches.
Misty's Ohio Starlight Mini Quilt is made with 5" squares of precut fabric (charms). She used Balboa by Sherri & Chelsi for Moda Fabrics. This itty bitty wallhanging quilt pattern combines a diminutive version of our traditional block with a 9 patch that is created with corner squares.
Natalie's Blue Ribbon Ohio Star is also made with 5" square of precut fabric (charms). She used Wilmington Essentials - In the Navy 5 Karat Gems by Wilmington Prints. This version requires little half square triangles, and Natalie whips those up quickly using the easy 8 method. She squares up her blocks using the Bloc Loc Square Up Ruler. This quilt is extra special with a triple-striped sashing and 9-patch cornerstones.

I've been pondering what quilt pattern to use to make a quilted jacket and this Ohio star block has moved to the top of the list. I love how the grey corners look on the table runners. I adore the 4 patches on Misty's quilt. And who doesn't love navy and white? Very striking. Now I need to decide which fabrics to use. Thank you, ladies! I love triple play day!

Loved all the Ohio star quilt arrangements. Natalie takes home the blue ribbon, her quilt was super awesome! Loved the mini quilt from Misti, would make a great baby doll quilt for my grandchildren. Jenny's quilt was great but I loved her table runner best!

I relate with Natalie. I am always impressed by all but Natalie makes quilts in colors I lone. Great coming together as family. She looks absolutely beautiful and hardly recognised her she looks so slim and her self confidence seems much better. I love the way your daughter, Natalie, trim the block because your video is shown all over the world and some people doesn't have access to this wonderful ruler. that makes the work easier. So, it's good to know that we can use the ruler we have.

Today's quilts are so pretty! Natalie's explanation was great, I don't do a lot of hourglass squares but now when I need to I will know how to square them properly with the rulers I have. And don't worry, Natalie - us lefties are used to having to figure out how to do everything "backwards", lol.
