      I always say that they keep the t-s and (by twisting a bit and turning them upside down they) turn them into extra r's, so that they can put it at the end of words like arena-r or banana-r.

    Once a friend of mine from the UK had a styrofoam cup in his hand and I said, "Oh, are you drinking some tea?" And he responded with something like, "That is such a stereotypical thing to say. Just because I'm from England, it must be tea then?" And I asked him, "Well, what is it?" And he just looked at me and said, " . . .Tea." XD

    The "bottle of water" is an interesting one because it is true of certain British regional accents but Americans usually don't pronounce the hard T either. Theirs sounds like "boddle of wader". And there are accents in Britain that do pronounce the T. I live in South Wales and having a more sing-song accent helps break up awkward English words like "bottle"

    • @leod-sigefast
      @leod-sigefast 2 роки тому +2

      It is even weirder because round where I live, Manchester area, it has gone through the glottal stop stage and remerged through the other end as a 'k' sound! It is not everyone but still a noticeable amount of Mancunians use, probably the 50+ age range. So, Hospikle, Likle (little), bokkle...not with water though, mind. I guess you need a -le sound after the t to make it work.

    • @paleogreg7427
      @paleogreg7427 2 роки тому +1

      It's even worse in the Mid-Atlantic states because it becomes "boddle of wooder". Where I grew up (Maryland) there was a progression: a hard T gets demoted to a D (or occasionally dropped), and a D gets dropped altogether. That's how "Baltimore" becomes "Baldmore" or, if you're hardcore, "Bawlmer".

    • @alicialexists
      @alicialexists 2 роки тому +1

      True. It took me years to notice that I pronounce the first couple words in my own country's name like "You-nigh-dead States" instead of "You-knighted States," and say "water bottle" like "wahder boddle." Oh, and I did not realize until after grade school that I leave out the "t" in "county" without adding a glottal stop, so it sounds like I am saying "cow-knee".

    tbf going away to university in the USA is a lot more of a big deal at times due to the sheer distance some people have to travel to go to whatever uni they are going to. So often times you won't see family for a LONG time, sometimes students even go to school so far from home they don't have the ability to go home for things like Thanksgiving break. For example I am from NY, and I went to university in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, that is about an 18 hour drive from where I am from lol. You aren't even halfway across the continental USA at that point either, you've only just hit the eastern Midwest. It very much is like being from say London and going away to school somewhere as far as like Warsaw from a distance perspective. So think about someone from one coast going to school all the way on the other, that is over 1000 miles further than going away to school in Moscow if you were from London. So when one starts to think about it from that perspective it makes more sense why going away to University is seen as a larger endeavor etc. Of course not everyone goes away for University though. I went to school locally for a few years prior to transferring out of state as well, and no one really made a big hubbub about anything until I was moving across the continent lmao. My friend's who go to school in state even a good ways away from our area still don't have the same fanfare when going away or coming back into town. Europeans often forget US states are often the size of European countries, and in many regards function on the same scale and in the same scope. State's often don't even have a monolithic culture themselves and often are on intersections of different regional cultures. For example Ohio falls on the Rust belt, Bible belt, and in Appalachian cultural territory. Depending upon where in the state you are you will see cultural differences in industry and day to day life. So if you are from Northern Ohio you probably have more in common with someone from Michigan on a cultural level, whereas someone from Southern Ohio is probably going to share more cultural similarities with individuals from Kentucky and West Virginia. America is far more than the transatlantic media we push out to the world, it is a shame it isn't as well represented on an international level. Far more to the place than hamburgers and the simpsons.

    And to think that the daily tea drinking tradition the brits are worldwide famous for wouldn't exist if it wasn't for a certain portuguese queen...
    She's also responsible for bringing the italian opera to England, as well as organising many ballets and theatre plays, for introducing the use of porcelain crockery in the court (they used silver or gold tableware which didn't keep the food warm), fans (leques), muffins (queques) and the Queens neighbourhood in New York was named after her. You do know that England is as far North as Toronto in Canada and Spain is closer to North Africa so naturally the English climate isn't going to be as hot and sunny?

    • @daylonmurray8068
      @daylonmurray8068 2 роки тому +14

      Actually, Toronto is as far South as Southern France, Northern Italy and Northern Spain! Except the latter have a Mediterranean climate thanks to the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, while Toronto gets as hot summers but much colder winters as the warm air from the Pacific Ocean is far away and bloqued by the Rockies, thus vulnerable to frigid Arctic air masses from the North. The UK is cloudy and rainy because it has an Oceanic climate, receiving rains from depressions originating from the Atlantic year-round. The High pressure in the Atlantic has no influence in winter whatsoever and passable influence only in summer (while further South in France, the sun shines more often and almost all summer from the Mediterranean Sea).

    I’m an American I’ve never seen anyone sing to themselves at a birthday party? Usually we just sit there and let other people sing and focus on blowing out the candles at the end of the song. Where did this idea that an American birthday boy or a girl will sing the birthday song with everyone else to themselves as typical behavior? I have a feeling she was hanging out with rich weird Americans where she saw this behavior. It’s not normal.

    3:01 I'm not British and I don't use umbrella too, in the Utah rain is that rare that I almost never saw him in my whole life tbh, but if it's raining so damn hard then I have nothing to do but just enjoy it and get wet in this hot weather

    As an American, I have to be honest. Most times, when we sing "Happy Birthday," it's not jovial and fun. No one wants to do it, so it is sung long and drawn out. Sounds like more of a funeral procession. At least, that's my experience.
