Uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation like 2,4 dinitrophenol (DNP) ==> enhanced metabolism , increased oxygen consumption & heat production WITHOUT essentially disrupting the electron transport chain OR increasing the NADH/NAD ratio .
BUT with time ; the increased oxygen consumption can NOT compensate for the increased metabolism & the subsequent surge in the NADH + H levels in the mitochondria ==> eventual increase in NADH/NAD ratio ==> increased Lactate / pyruvate ratio ==> mild LACTIC ACIDOSIS .
That MILD lactic acidosis is NOT sufficient to cause a WIDE anion gap metabolic acidosis , but rather a NORMAL anion gap metabolic acidosis .
    Lord knows best .
