Nhhostas.com - Container gardening with hosta plants. When to divide hostas, what type of potting soil and compost to use, drainage for your pot, storing your container in winter.
My favorite garden plant. I use them in containers and in the ground, shady or full eastern sun, they all grow well. I don't do anything but cover the potted ones with a little mulch after they die from the first frost and leave them out through the winter. There is such a huge variety of color, texture and size, plus they're so hardy, you can't go wrong using them in your garden.
I live in zone 3-4, central OR state at 4200 ft. I have a new greenhouse, first I have ever owned. For the first time since I moved here 16 years ago I am growing Hosta, one of my most favorite plants. The Hosta are in large pots. I am hoping to overwinter them in the greenhouse with the pot in the shade on the ground. I thought I might cushion the temperature swings with straw around the pots. We do go to minus 20f some winters. The part in your video about dividing after so much time was very helpful. I've never had to grow Hosta in containers before. If anyone has any helpful suggestions, I would appreciate them.
I discovered hostas when I dug up several hostas to move them and Wisconsin winter interrupted. I forgot about them until spring when I went out to check the garden and! there were the hostas lying on the grass and turning green. Didn’t appear to have suffered at all. It was weird. So I’ve discovered many varieties and now have many in my California shade garden-under a black walnut tree.
I am from Kansas City I have had elephant hostas for at least 20 years in my back yard under heavy shade and recently the tree was cut down. Now they are getting direct sun at least 8+ hours, will they survive or should I be getting them out of the ground? Thank you.
dont know if they ever contacted you but try getting great hosta online from green mountain hosta. U can get a really good start for about 50 60 bucks including shipping. You can pick by cost and by the end of august this year you will b pleased. They are way cool!
Heads up folks! The sound quality of this video is terrible so turn on the subtitles right away. It could also be just my computer if no one else has had this problem but I don't think it is. Figured I would give fair warning.
your dog eating the snow in the beginning made me giggle

What can you use to keep ants and bugs from eating them? Mine have holes all over the leaves.
You are so helpful!

You should move it to a shady area. You can divide it...leave a portion of it in that spot and move the rest if you like. 😁
Thanks. Very helpful advice.
