serpentza Oh really? Is that right? Wellile have to take your word on that, you Chinese expert...Joking lol. I love Chinese ppl, personally I don't believe im superior to anyone. Ive always loved Asian ppl, beautiful humble ppl :)
The funny thing is, that Chinese complain about foreigner´s cultural ignorance, but when they are travelling they ignore the culture of the other country. Seen that many times in Thailand where I live.
I took a tour of national parks in the US. You could tell who was Chinese by there behavior. They were usually in a huge group and were pushy and didnt abide by rules. For example, people would line up to go to bathroom. But some of the Chinese would just cut everyone.
totally agree. I kinda embarrassed of mainland chinese, especially their habit of wasting foods (in a buffet restaurant, they like to take foods more than they could handle and in the end they don't eat it) this is really contradict with where I was grew. I hate people who like to wasting foods -_-
I have lived in Thailand for more than 12 years. When Chinese come to Thailand and bring their Chinese Culture here, Thai people do their best to ignore their rude and crude ways. Spitting and blowing snot rockets on the floors and sidewalks, obnoxiously loud conversations on their cell phones, and their aggressive/grabbing and fondling style with the young Thai ladies, as if all Thai ladies work on the streets. Most hotels here have "Chinese floors only" void of carpeting that is difficult to clean the snot rockets, spit and spilled food. We are all aware of the Chinese culture as the Chinese make it ever so obvious but they also refuse to acknowledge any other culture but their own, as if it was the only civilized culture in the world. As a half European/half Asian man, I acknowledge the differences and uniqueness of every culture and attempt to retain the best of each and overlook the worse of each. Chinese have their flaws as well as their qualities. Unfortunately, when Chinese visit Thailand, we see the majority to be arrogance and culturally ignorant of any other culture aside their own.
Also foreign-born, living in Cape Town. After seeing Hu Knows, will be sure to Mark How things are done.We all have so much to learn from each other's skills and perspectives👍
I had a Chinese chemistry partner, typical well organised robot person. Anyway she was quite rude, until our first tests came back, I scored highest in the class.....then she was smiling at me and trying to be friendly. I thought it was gross that she could change her demeanour because i was smarter than her.
@@susanohara4274 yeah I guess so, I might not of been clear in my comment and what I was thinking about. I don't put too much value in test scores as I believe that everyone has a gift, rather it's making a person comfortable and letting them express themselves in a positive way to find solutions with the knowledge they possess. Asian culture puts the children under pressure to achieve, and really stifled that creative spark, and it showed how they treated a (friendly) stranger. The strict culture has positive effects too....so, I should not be stereo typing, as it can appear in anyone.
U forgot to add “and always overdressing” las in always wearing a suit & tie for absolutely no reason like when you’re just walking around a park. I get Winston wears a suit and tie in the shower
Seeing your positivity and excitement in these older videos compared to your change in demeanour after you left, it’s really sobering. Such a shame things went so badly wrong in China.
It's pretty much the same anywhere. In the west (at least in the UK where I'm from), whilst there tends to be a niche sort of drug culture in the younger generation, and some people are more accepting of it, the vast majority of people see drugs as disgusting, where as binge drinking is just a social activity.
73Corbin well from my understanding (my mom is taiwan-born chinese), it is ingrained into chinese kids that drugs are bad because of the opium crisis in china back in those days. they tell kids that it was because of drugs (opium) that their country had such a hard time. which is true. so i would honestly say that the opium thing in 1800's china is not hypocritical at all, as the anti-drug mentality is a response to opium and the problems it brought on china.
Serpentza, I have been a subscriber for like a week, and I can't stop watching your videos, very very interesting & refreshing, it gives me so much knowledge about China. Thank you. Also, I love when you walk in the middle of the street, interacting with random citizen, it's something that fascinates me, you obviously speak very well in Chinese, I wish I could see more interaction like these ;) you're awesome.
Just discovered your channel. Like it! The real deal I learn something new and interesting about China and the Chinese people with every video of yours. Thanks for being awesome!
RUDENESS FROM OLD GENERATION!(THE EVIL UNCLE GENERATION), there is a huge gap between young and old generation in terms of education level. The young generation is much more open and polite than old.
Try reading this post by a Chinese blogger. You can feel the poor guy's exasperation: blog.hiddenharmonies.org/2013/05/04/whats-wrong-with-china-hint-its-not-the-government/ If you like to speculate on _why_ the Han Chinese are the way they are, here's a good theory to start with: www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/how-social-darwinism-made-modern-china-248/
神州 Shenzhou, His first description of himself is "a Chinese person", so I don't know what you're talking about. And what if he's more familiar with America? He saw what he saw and wrote about it.
In the uk some people do and some don’t. I’m a germaphobe and I can’t stand wearing shoes and socks or slippers so I don’t but some do. I freak when I see people touching the bottom of shoes 🤢 Most people will ask for some newspaper for example if their shoes are dirty and they don’t have an enclosed porch to leave them in x It’s amazing that they don’t do that, but happy to let children do their business in the streets, have disgusting public toilets, including there not being toilet roll and using hands & water 🤮 Where’s the hot water and liquid soap? Nasty, where are the food stalls washing their hands & using the toilet…I feel sick writing that 😂
mysummertouch : just appearing clean (outside) isn’t enough to be clean. Shoes are worn for a reason (one of them is to keep feet clean from dirt outside).
mysummertouch Is that real? Which place? I must go there to check it out
6 років тому+8
unless you walking in wet mud there no reason to take shoes off and the persistent nature of this requirement is just neurotic. perhaps Chinese and East Europeans should walk barefoot outside and have foot shower installed in front and back door
They can’t stand westerners smoking weed yet will happily smoke cigarettes and drink Baijiu all day long when those two drugs are some of the most harmful. Doesn’t make much sense to me 🤔
@@namelesssnitchy You are right, but countries like china are the worst for it. Purely because of the amount they smoke and drink. China will lock you up for life for a few grams of weed yet allow half of their population to chain smoke and binge drink. All drugs in excess are terrible for the body just find it ironic how these types of countries let certain drugs slide...
I'm not sure about other Chinese but I think one of the reason why I disapprove of drug usage is because in 19th century Chinese society almost destroyed by opium.
Experimental Flow : I am a 1/2 a century old grown man of the 21 st Century ! I can operate machinery, drive my vehicle , study anything and all things related to any topic, my mind is clear and focused. My coordination and balance pivot off and around my bodies center point of gravity. So I really don't know WTF you're referencing to.... Maybe it's pharmaceuticals, legal pharmaceuticals. You can make a few $1000.00 bucks offering up your own body and mind to test and make trial runs of a ( NEW ) potential Drug that relieve other's aliments but are ( ALWAYS ) accompanied with potential side affects. Some life threatening ! What a bunch of Hogwash ! The pot is not a needle and syringe, is not a synthetic pill, nor is it a fifth of whiskey. All of which will affect me in ways that i ( can not ) perform any of the above.
Experimental Flow : Not at all . Dude; if I told you how little I smoke each and everyday you would laugh at me. I'm a" light weight " , but I function perfectly each and every day. Try this one on : "Don't drink and drive." I personally use to drink and drive all the time. However: I never got Drunk and drove, ever !
As a grandmother from 🇨🇦 I love your videos for the educational content. I will never have an opportunity to visit the countries you show us and I deeply appreciate your wonderful insight. Thank you for taking me along with you.
serpentza I have a brother named Winston so we share a bond. Please ‘stay awesome’ by just being yourself. I from a part of Canada that is so different from the rest of the country, Newfoundland. It’s an island on the east coast and because of that we have a very different attitude to life. You would love it there.
This list is pretty much spot-on. Speaking as a Chinese who is studying in the US, the way a lot of Westerners (not all of course) carelessly spend money really blows my mind. It just seems like a lot of them retain the spending habit of a rebellious 15-year-old throughout their entire lives.
jeffrman777 well i live in the west (even though i am mixed) and i agree on most of these.. i think asian cultures are much better.. more peaceful and reserved.. calm and much more respectful compared to most western cultures.. i like how people in asia are much more reserved when it comes to showing affection because if i see anyone making out in the street i just really want to slap them and tell them to get a room.. i don’t need to see two people basically eating eachothers faces.. knowing that in asia this is frowned upon makes me very tempted to move to an asian country.. simply because i was actually raised with alot of asian customs (my great grandmother was asian.. we think se was indonesian seeing as we live in holland and there was alot of slavery in indonesia that later brought alot of them to our country.. though this is on my mums side.. on my dads side i’ve got african and native american.. ) basically some of the things like taking off your shoes when entering someones house are things that i was taught early and that have stuck to me ever since.. i mean it’s just nasty to walk all over someones house with outside shoes on for that same floor only to be walked by one of the residents who is walking around on bare feet.. only for them to get all of the outside bacteria on their feet...
Litch The Shinigami There is some truth in what you said, but I do acknowledge that there are many elements in Chinese culture that can be very toxic. Many things about the culture are double-edged swords that are very good in some ways and very bad in other ways, depending on the context. Parenting for example is one of these things that I think we should strike a balance between the Eastern way and the Western way.
Litch The Shinigami - Slapping someone in the face doesn't sound peaceful, reserved or respectful at all. How about working on that pent up aggression of yours first before you begin espousing the virtues of one culture vs another?
True about Sex and the City - my Chinese friend said to me "I was surprised to find westerners are actually romantic. I thought you were like people in Sex and the City" 😆
My wife is Chinese, she had some of her friends visiting from China and when they would dine out it HAD to be Chinese food, WTF? Who goes to other countries to eat food they can already eat in their own country. (and don't try to tell me Chinese food is the best that simple isn't true, Italian food was voted the best/most poplar food in the world.)
It's also depending from which chinese province they are from, they may just not like the food. My GF is cantonese and the food there is very light, very few herbs and such and little salt. In comparison to other food which one is used to, my gf reacts to bitter, sour and salty very sensitive because she is not used to it. Therefor the food can be seen too intensive in flavor for her. Has nothing to do with nationalism lol. It's just a different food culture. You share lots of dishes instead of just having one for yourself. They even share 1 pizza for 6 people and have different pasta etc, if they order other countries dishes (at least in china). Just because people voted Italian food the most, doesn't mean all voted for it ... you can still have your own opinions on food lol.
Picture it. May 2018. Santorini, Greece. Chinese tour group all trooping into a Chinese restaurant. Let that sink in, you are in Greece, on Santorini which is so Greek , and I bet none of those Chinese tourists ate anything except Chinese food.
I can't say enough good stuff about your videos, it's refreshing to watch quality vids that are educational while being entertaining. You have a great presence and I can't wait for your next video.
Fair legal systems? Guilty until proven innocent is definitely not fair, and favoritism (particularly towards females, be they offenders or accusers) within the judicial system is not fair either. Free press that's all been bought out by the government isn't that free either. And freedom? You really think we're more free than the Chinese people? We're just as enslaved, the only difference is that our dystopia is a little less smoggy.
My goodness the metal gear solid ' ! ' moments from the evil uncles make me crack up. Love your videos Winston, you and C Milk are awesome guys. Keep up the good work!
Heather Murray You do know that’s not true right? Trump declared that, but not the South African government. And anyone who has had their land seized has been compensated by the government. There’s not one record of illegal land seizures by the government. Apartheid still remains to be one of the worst discriminations in South Africa.
In Cambodia the Chinese build many casinos and hotels employing only Chinese workers and the crazy thing is the Cambodian’s aren’t allowed in the casinos. They also franchise many historical buildings in Cambodia and charging to enter. In Thailand the Chinese build condos in volume and in Laos they are trying to push the small shop owners out of the market.
As someone who has worked for a Chinese Auto supplier (Tier 1) in the US, I thought I was informed about the culture in China...thanks to your videos and C-Milk, I have learned more in the past 2 weeks than i have in the past 10 years. I am coming to China this summer (Changsha, HuNan) and I really appreciate all your hard work and the quality content that you provide in your vids. I never thought I would learn so much from youtubers and my GF who lives in Changsha really appreciates that I am now more aware of the obstacles ahead of us and i am more understanding now of our differences. You have given me the basics to "Stay Awesome" when i come to China for the first time. Thank you for doing this and in a most humble way as well! More power!
Hey Serpentza, I have been hooked to your channel for a few weeks now. I've lived in China for 7 years (3 in Beijing and 4 in my beloved Chengdu). A bit more than a year ago I came back to Europe (Italy) with my Chinese wife (Im currently posting under her account, enough with the parenthesis now) and our two young kids. We left China for them, as for all its current problems Italy is about 100 times a better place for growing them. Few countries can get more frustrating than China, and by the looks of it it's not going to get better, yet seeing your videos makes me miss it so damn much. Keep up the good work, sooner or later I will find the time to publish my own (rather enormous) material on the subject.
I was living in Korea, and whiletraining for a boxing charity event I shaved my head for convenience - my Korean girlfriend then filled me in on why everyone was looking at me funny: apparently Koreans shave their heads to repent for doing something terribly shameful.. I grew my hair back out lol
RCXDerp something western media says about China might be true, but there's absolutely no drug allowed and no drug at all! We've already paid enough for drug use that the entire population hates drug... Search Google for "the opium war" And also, since tobacco and alcohol is a normal thing, young Chinese growing up never give a fvck about that, it's so common that they don't care. (It's like daily common, not like craze common) So actually there's not a lot of people addicted to anything... Except for video games or anemei...
I'm a white westerner and I personally have never understood people wearing shoes in their house (or other people's houses). It brings in dirt and whatever else you've stepped in (ex: dog poo). That's kinda gross in my opinion.
Yea as a blue collar worker that has to wear steel toed boots if I have to take off my boots to enter your home I’m leaving and I won’t be back ( I wear good wool socks and I’m not destroying them on your nasty floor) I put my boots on before work and when they come off I’m getting a shower and getting in bed Also do not take your shoes off in my house- you don’t live here It’s just a realistic respect issue
I honestly think it's weird NOT to keep them on until you reach your room. You obviously don't walk around the house all day with them on... no one does that. Many Americans just don't take them off before they enter their house.
When discussing the attitudes to drugs, I'm amazed you didn't acknowledge China's history with opium addiction and the Opium Wars. That history would make any society pretty anti-drug.
You're amazed he didn't talk about a problem from 200 years ago? Really. Fascinating. The entire planet has a problem with opiates TODAY and the chemicals to make such drugs originate in where else? China.
Yes , The 5 Rights of China 1) In China the people have the Right to urinate anywhere they please , in my country I must look for a gas station 2) In China the people have the Right to eat any living thing , in my country I must go to MacDonald's 3) In China the people have the Right to counterfeit any countries merchandise , in my country I get it trouble 4) In China the People have the Right to be rude to everyone , In my country its too dangerous to be rude 5) In China the people have the Right to worship the Government , In my country I must go to church When China becomes a world leader , will I be granted these Rights ?
In Finland we also take our shoes off inside. I guess it's due to climate, which leads shoes to often being pretty dirty or wet... And the shoes themselves are often quite big and bulky, especially during winter, so not very comfortable to use them inside.
I suppose only Englishman/ Americans have no issue to walk around their house with street shoes on. How the heck would anyone think it`s good to walk into friends living room in dirty shoes ?
bimbo mumba I guess it depends on climate.. And culture of course. Perhaps they wear shoes inside because the floor/carpet is so dirty that it is disgusting to not wear shoes? ;) Catch-22.
There’s still a difference. I don’t know about China but in japan you take off your shoes before going in through the doorway. Where in most western places I’ve been you walk inside and there’s a place to put your shoes just inside the door.
As a Chinese person, the only thing that really get to me is the fact that us chinese are often miss portrayed. When I first moved overseas at 5 years old, I was always bullied, harassed, hit, and insulted because kids in my class were taught the wrong things about my culture. I think this applies to many nations because people judge them based on generalized stereotypes and tend to forget that everyone is different within those confines. I love your videos, and best of luck to everyone in 2019 :)
I know this comment is 4 years old now but want to add this is very true, we get taught so many misconceptions and stereotypes about China that aren't necessarily true. I was talking with a Chinese girl for a while and she thought me such much more about China and its actual culture, and the same way around with her knowing false things about western culture, there is also a lot of things that are just the same in both cultures. Especially younger people would agree more to western ideals
If you came to america and were the target of bullying, it's not because of where you came from, it's because of how you behave when you got here. The only people who are the target of bullying are people who need to modify their behavior to match the rest of the people in their peer group. Also, the USA has NOTHING on bullying when it comes to Asian countries like China and Japan! USA students can't even attend a Japanese school because of how harshly they'd be treated. Kids in the USA accept all foreigners, unless their behavior is strange or appalling, like not wearing underarm deodorant. Fit in and you'll have a good time. Act like a fool and you'll be treated as such.
I know it doesn’t have anything to do with this video but I wanted to give you kudos on your conquering southern and northern China documentaries. I have a degree in Economics/Finance and also Global Studies with a concentration on Asia. It was definitely the most unbiased, diverse and informative documentary/movies I’ve ever seen. Very impressed and hope you do others in other parts of Asia.
great video. love from China. Chinese culture is so complex that it consists of unique religions, moral standard, history, art and so on. Even many Chinese themselves don't understand our traditional culture today. As a result, many foreigners just see a developing country named China, but have no idea of the extraordinary culture which shapes China's past and future.
What culture? Spitting everywhere, shitting and pissing all over the place as soon as they are outside, rude, absolutely no manners whatsoever, no sense of responsibility, no morals, no ethics..... Now tell me I'm wrong.......!!!
Simon Purnell Go to Chinese museums in every provinces of China and you can see an iceburg of Chinese culture. They're more convincible than my words. What you saw are bad habbits when living in the city. First, only part of Chinese do so. Second, perhaps 5 to 20 years ago, they lived in the rural areas where have no public toilets and trash cans. It's not easy for them to form new habbits to adapt urban life, especially for the elder. Btw, I think you are smart enough to tell the difference between habbit and culture.
Rude manners, spitting, shitting and pissing are passive tactics used by China men to drive off invaders from ruling China in the past. They learned this from those dark skin barbarians when they discovered invaders less likely to invade barbarian territory(Bangladesh, Pakistan, Burma, Iran, Laos, Cambodia, Siberia). I would say this tactic is like a double-edge sword, the effect backfired and that made many people in China become more like self-hating traitors in China.
Thanks for another great video. Chinese people will appreciate what you have done here one day, at least I am. Would you want to talk about top 5 things we LIKE about each other? Happy Chinese New Year. Hope you had some dumplings tonight.
RONNY FUNG --- thanks for that statement , i think the vast majority of british people like the chinese , they never cause any trouble , they inter marry with us , they like life style , they work hard , and their kids mix with our kids ! as i said , much respect !! x
SHENZHOU --- we as europeans would never IMPOSE our values on you chinese !! because some of YOUR values are a lot better then ours !! and some are not !! the people you actually see come to china are probably more FORWARD then most westerners , BECAUSE THEY HAVE TRAVELLED THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE !! the same as the chinese in BRITAIN are more FORWARD then chinese in CHINA , BECAUSE THEY CAME HERE , TO BRITAIN IN THE FIRST PLACE !! and i have no problems with FORWARD CHINESE IN BRITAIN !! .
SHENZHOU --- but i UNDERSTAND what you say ,,, some westerners can be bad ,, there are bad people every where , dont class us by a few bad apples you may have met !! . and if you look above , i did not mention ASSIMULATE i said INTEGRATE ( TWO compleatly different meanings ) ) , and MIX WITH US , you CHINESE can do that in BRITAIN and still have your chinese culture and because mostly we are compatible with the chinese , we in britain get along together bloody great !! its a shame i cannot make the same distinction , about other immigrants to europe who cause constant TROUBLE , and you have the same problems in the west of china i ve heard !!
Yes, you fucking do. Have you never been out on weekends? Bitches with their underwear down to their ankles squatting between cars having a piss because they've been binge drinking. Or the guys pissing a corner . You're walking down the street and then you see a river of piss growing on the path in front of you only to turn to your right to see some drunk guy pissing up against the wall. In my city in the UK, they even put out special urinals in the middle of the fucking street on weekends for the pissed up guys to piss in. They have no doors. All you see is the back of a man when he's pissing there. So, no, we can't give you that. Your people piss in the streets too. Oh, wait. Don't forget that when they get pissed, they start fucking in public too. Yeh, so, you can have THAT!
Very good getting along knowing what others cannot tolerate. I like and support you. Stay confident and feel happy. For those are negative don't let them affect you.
Good luck dude, I went through the same process with my wife back when we first started dating (way back in 2002). It's nerve wracking, but always remember, get the mother to like you first. If the mother likes you, she can convince the father. Bring gifts, the more expensive the better. Chocolates for the mother, alcohol for the dad. Check with your girlfriend first though, she'll know what her parents like.
You should consider going, I've been there twice for work (8 week stays) and both trips were amazing and memorable...I've been trying to find a way to go back but so far no dice...
+marioozzie I agree, it's amazing. My company sent me there on a two year contract, and though sometimes it was exhausting, overall it was a good experience. Plus, I loved the high speed trains because I could bring my wife to visit her family over the weekend in only two hours without fussing about with cramped airliners. (The ability to stretch one's legs in a high speed train is worth every penny; I wish we had them here in the US honestly.)
Me too!! I was asked , "Where did you learn such good English?"I replied, "At school, but I'm still having trouble with it. Please feel free to correct me if I make grammatical errors." LOL
Yes, I had that, too. I was in a cafe and the manager approached me asking if I'd settle a bet. He said I was from Scotland, and his wife thought I was Swedish. I said, "You're both wrong. I'm from Australia." At which the woman said, "Oh yes, we've been to Vienna and loved it." I looked blank, then realised what she thought and said loudly and clearly, "Australia." She went on happily describing how she loved Vienna and asked if I came from there, and that's when I just gave up.
coralarch I've been to Australia many times, and been asked, "How did you get off the island?" People can't be bothered to read anymore. Libraries are like museums. R.I.P. Bon Scott.
I get the same thing when i'm in Finland. I'm Irish but my family are part Finnish, when i'm visiting relatives people will just stop and stare at us speaking English in public.
keep up the great work, as an Aussie, you have opened my eyes on the truth of China. I just hope when the corrupt CCP eventually goes away it will be a smooth transition to true democracy
@@littlebit6211 but how can you say insulting if it's all true????? They hate foreigners do drugs but they're number 1 exporters of drugs in Philippines
Wow, I have only watched a few of your episodes but you are 110% accurate, "Sensei." IMO, I would apply it to South Asian/Japanese cultures. Finally, as you stated it works both ways. I have traveled to Europe and made many friends as I try to learn their language , the basics , and research their culture before even leaving the plane. Average looking guy but Ladies of those countries are surprised of my knowledge of language and sincerity in learning/respecting their culture. Works wonders in the Scandinavian and Eastern counties( Hungary , Czech republic etc)
I really enjoy your videos about China. Having lived in over 11 countries worldwide including South Africa and presently retired I lived in Hohhot Inner Mongolia in 2008. I can relate to your videos especially the “ honey trap” , similar things happened to me including the travel ban to Beijing for 3 months during the 2008 Olympics, was not allowed to leave the city of Hohhot at all. Loved China despite all the surveillance and hassle. Lived in worse countries for sure. Thank you.
About the sex part, I guess Chinese values are against the "dating" culture that is prevalent in the U.S. (I don't know about other countries.) My friends and I often joke about how Americans date first and then love, while Chinese people date because of love. Things like hugging can be very special in Chinese culture (Hugging has, perhaps, changed a lot in younger generations.) It's not necessarily "having sex"; it's just how one approaches a person whom he or she may like. P.S. Porns are very accessible in China. I have an easier time watching porn back in China than at my dorm lol (my school uses filters). It's one of the things where the government appears to do in one way but do not enforce their way when it comes to what each individual does. When it comes to sex education in China, the issue is not about how sex works (which everyone figures out from porn or friends) but more about proper perceptions about one's body. Learning solely from porn could cause some serious misconceptions.
Oh come on. I have cycled around parts of China and there is a huge sex industry even in the small villages. I lost count of the number of times I went into a village hairdressers and was shown a curtain and a bed and asked if I wanted anything else! Like a lot of Asia it is all about saving face, but you don't really Know what's going on behind the curtain.
Facts....I have been in Asia for three years and I can tell you from the early 20's and up (women in my case but I am sure the men too)....they WANT to be promiscuous. They cannot wait....
Dear Winston. I've been in China and Hong Kong for nearly 30 years but still find interesting insights in your videos. A colleague and I published a book recently which looks in a bit more detail at things like culture, technology, property, debt and so on. Maybe you and your subscribers would like it. H.Davies and M.Raskovic, Understanding a Changing China. Apologies if you don't like "advertising" but we really did write it to help people. No money in such things! Regards, Prof.Howard Davies
Talk about South Africa, like where Chinese people can visit without getting robbed. I went to China I did not get robbed. Portugal and France, I got robbed and pickpocketed. But I still like France and Portugal very much. It is beautiful there.
Actually, despite the fact that Germany is quite a modern country, air conditioning is not very widespread. On the other hand, most houses have central heating which I heard is not that widespread in countries where airconditioning is widespread. And if we Germans want fresh air, we just open up our windows. Hanging your wash outside in your garden or balcony is not considered to be a sign that you are poor but that you are concious of the problems of the environment and want to protect it by saving electricity and therefore, it is even very popular amongst young people. So, even developed countries have different standards of living if you look at the facts of airconditioning, or using dryers or central heating.
lol at the Evil Uncle Counter! XD I love that we always get the two perspectives with your videos and as always without that stifling pc-filter you get almost everywhere nowadays. PS: All that staring. You really need balls to get used to this and walk around with that confidence.
I hope it won't turn into some back-handed compliments list, like: What westerners like about China: - Dat sleazy asian booty What Chinese like about westerners: - Naive and easy to scam
Just discovered your channel this weekend. Man, your videos are great. So interesting, and thoroughly honest and authentic commentary. My Dad lived in Thailand before he died. I was there a couple of times. And while I know comparing the two is ridiculous, they are completely different I am sure, the glimpse into Asian life in general that you present, gives me a better understanding of what my Dad's day to day life must have been like the last few years of his life. Thank you for that.....I've never subscribed to anyone on UA-cam. But I've had to now, your videos are too good.... I'm not even sure what happens when you subscribe?...LOL.....Keep up the good work. Greetings and well wishes from Eire.
4:19 I have heard that from a Chinese family while visiting Malaysia last year. I repeated what they said to my mother on phone (but they understood what I was telling and was happy to hear it!)
interesting observation: regarding point #1 - this is exactly what the rest of the world think of the Chinese. Even from the old days where they maintained that their country was the middle kingdom between earth (better than the rest of the earth) and heaven. We all think that Chinese are arrogant and have superiority complex. Even the latest example where an executive of Huawei was arrested in Canada, they were so outraged at the action that they took (not arrested but detained) two Canadians as revenge. Regarding point #2 - cultural ignorance - fair point. As a traveler I would attempt to become familiar with the culture of my destination. It's a learn as you go type of thing too. And turnabout is fair play. We need Chinese tourists to step up their game as well. Point #3 - hard to say. I've met very promiscuous Chinese in Toronto. But if they live in an 'over' controlled environment, it's hard to fight that point. Point #4 - Canadians are big savers. Usually. I know I am. I over contribute to my retirement by 84% according to my financial advisor. But I may be an exception Point #5 - drug use - well. yeah. Pot was a normal part of student life in the 60's and 70's. Alcohol as well. But we have the freedom to fail. MJ is now legal in Canada. So is freedom. We all think that China has no freedom.
I am a Chinese and I agree with you to some extent. As for point#1 I completely agree with you. Chinese think they’re going to rule the globe in the future, they are effortlessly to be pride with little superiority. For example, the latest science fiction movie called’ the wondering planet’ talking about a story that Chinese save the world while other foreigners are in danger. Chinese people are extremely arrogant because of their innocence. We’re lack of general knowledge about history, literature, philosophy and law , which includes the importance of human rights. I guess there are plenty of reasons, as he said in the former video, first one is history. Because of the Cultural Revolution, poor life before the Reform and Opening and long ruled memories in Chinese genes. Second one must be the government. A few communist in the high statues own the prominent amount of money, and they use books, internet, news to monopoly citizens. Third reason is also the policy, a Little similar to the 2nd one. Ordinary Chinese are being great pressure due to the large population and they are familiar with money and power. They are obsessed with money and it can be used to buy anything. So one with great power can do everything without any accuse . As for point # 2, 3,4, 5 It’s not objective. In Chinese’ eyes, there are two kinds of foreigners, who come to China and who show up in the TV. Foreigners in China have a highly social status and people extremely admire them, especially girls , they think the white are the most handsome person in the world. As for foreigners on Tv, they are chosen by the government. So some of televisions are showing the kindness of normal family, some of shows include sexual abuse on purpose. The foreigners on the social media are paid to speak good for the communist party. I have no idea which kind of foreigners would like to come China, maybe who are interested in Chinese culture or who want to make fortune in China. It’s not a fair play. I am so shamed that even in the 21st century, Chinese are slavey and ruled, whether they are in China or outside of China.
@@jenniechou8653 Thank-you for that well written and well reasoned reply. This is rare on UA-cam, and I am heartened by it! :) :) . I do think that there are government motives for portraying westerners in a low moral situation. First, China has a very old and proud cultural heritage. secondly, the Eurpoean/western culture that has been dominant for 100 - 200 years culminating in the American ideal is very difficult to argue against on merit alone. Who would not want access to free market? who would not want to be controlled by religion? Who would not want to have an equal chance at any position in life, regardless of gender or creed? The strength of the individual is a very attractive concept, but doesn't necessarily fit into the Chinese government worldview. (for that matter, it is also not aligned with many Islamic countries and even Russia, which is basically a western culture except for the despotic nature of it's successive governments). so what to do? use media to ensure that foreigners are amoral. Whereas we, here in Canada are also small family minded people, and would not wish ill upon anybody.
living abroad isnt so hard. one must always remember, adapt their culture. i saw many foreigners went to another country but trying to change the culture to suit them. it was inviting problems actually
I did that by accident once. I was with my family on holiday in Egypt when I was nineteen and we were doing the whole ancient Egypt tour going to different temples, the pyramids and valley of the kings and whatnot. Now my parents in their infinite wisdom decided to do it in the low season and the hottest time of year with temperatures between 32c on a really mild day and 50-52c on the hottest days with most days around 40-45c. So perhaps unsurprisingly when we went out to see the temples and do the tours, I wore as little as I could get away with without being lynched. Since I was young, fit, trim, pale and blonde in that heat I’d have been absolutely content with wearing a bikini that barely covered the essentials, sandals and bag containing my huge flask of water, wallet, phone and other essentials against my chest for safekeeping plus a whole lot of maximum factor sun cream. Alas that would have gotten me lynched, or most likely arrested since our tour group was accompanied by a security guard. I didn’t know that at first since the tour guide just introduced this Egyptian guy in loose fitting beige clothing and a jacket by his name and that he was a member of staff and because he was silent and discreet none of the other tourists really seemed to notice him much. But the jacket drew my attention because I found it odd that he’d wear one in the middle of the burning desert in the full heat of the afternoon sun during summer. So I ended up subtly watching him, mostly by perhipheral vision between sites. It wasn’t until we were most of the way around the pyramid tour in Giza and a blast of scorching desert wind just happened to be in the right direction to flap the jacket a bit. And for a precious few moments I could see the evidence of his real job was. Holstered at his side normally hidden under the jacket was a gun. Being British meant I don’t know what type of gun it was but it looked like a pistol. I think it was a prudent course of action to have an armed guard carefully watching over tourists and protecting them. There have been incidents where tourists had been killed by resentful Egyptians or terrorists. Bear in mind that this was was roughly twenty years ago when it happened and it was before the riots and uprising destabilised the entire region. At the time the tourism industry was a huge source of economic income for Egypt. I think it was the second biggest source of income for Egypt and any tourists that ended up being attacked or killed by disgruntled Egyptians could not be allowed to happen. So they were very careful with keeping them safe because it would be potentially very harmful to a lot of people if the tourists or people planning to visit but got scared off. So I’m fairly confident that if I did go around Egypt wearing a bikini and precious little else that I wouldn’t have to worry about being lynched or assaulted for it. But I do tend to think that I would be arrested for dressing like that in public. So instead I opted to take the fine line between wearing as little as possible but still being practical for interacting within the country I’m visiting. Sandles, shorts and sleeveless shirt. It worked out very well for the most part. On the day that we were going to be touring a huge, ornate a very important mosque I did choose clothing that covers my shoulders, elbows and knees in respect for the native culture though I did inwardly balk at being given a shawl to borrow to cover my hair for the tour of the mosque. But all the male tourists didn’t have to change clothing or wear anything extra and that pissed me off. I don’t like being treated as inferior just for being born with a female body and that the Muslims in the mosque couldn’t find a practical way to compromise with women that aren’t Muslims. I’d have been okay if I covered my shoulders, elbows and knees and they don’t insist on the shawl. I refused to go inside to take the tour so I just found a cool and shaded spot outside and waited with our bodyguard. So that was that. But a few days later we’re out on another tour of a temple and I’m in my short shorts and sleeveless shirt again. But as we toured this ancient temple native Egyptians gave me dirty or angry looks but I had no idea why. At least not until we reached a very small mosque that was very worn down by the ages and honestly not in the best condition but still cared for and maintained. The tour guide stopped outside it and explained that this is a very old mosque still revered as a holy site. As we moved on I figured it out. They felt like I was committing blasphemy by dressing like that so close to a holy site. But if I’d known that it was on the itinerary I’d have covered my joints,

Yes, Chinese/Asian people are super good at spending money, but they have this weird thing about ... gambling. Yes there are people with gambling problems of all cultures, but man, Asians do love their gambling. I read an article somewhere that said it's a difference in the way people of different cultures think about things like time. Something about in Asian cultures, 20 years from now is not seen as far away, so it's easier to think of saving money so you'll have a nice savings 20 years from now ... as for the gambling, who knows. Another thing is, in the West we have the concept of win-win. But with Chinese people, in my own limited experience, it's win-lose. I sold a bicycle to a nice Chinese family, and they were dithering around, everyone riding it, Mom, Dad, the college-age kid ... but they could not bring themselves to buy the thing until I came up with a cock-and-bull story about how I was selling the thing as a favor for my friend, and at the price I was going to have to put in $20 of my own to keep my friend from being mad at me ... then there was a general sigh of relief, I'd lost, and they handed over the money in dirty, old bills and rode off into the sunset. Maybe in the long term win-lose is more successful but I sure like win-win. If I buy something or sell something, I want whoever is on the other side of the transaction to feel good, not bad.
Likewise when the world hated the States for creating the financial crisis in 2008. But the difference is, there is no evidence that China created this virus, even National Geographic and Nature admitted it's a product of nature that only happen to create sickness first reported in China.

The funny thing is, that Chinese complain about foreigner´s cultural ignorance, but when they are travelling they ignore the culture of the other country. Seen that many times in Thailand where I live.
CNX Expat this is so true
@Scott Whatever I think there is 1 clear winner. And it's not the Chinese.
I hate people who like to wasting foods -_-
@Scott Whatever wow. How stupid you are? I mean if you have 10 iq more you would know your statement is pretty much baseless.
Also lack of respect in temples.
Chinese people are being brainwashed every day by CCP and don't even know it ...therefore they live in denial of the rest of the civilized world.
Usually the things you hate about others are the ones you are guilty of. - I think this applies to the Chinese.

The strict culture has positive effects too....so,

5 - It's rather funny that Chinese people hold drug use in absolute disdain, but binge drinking till you black out is perfectly acceptable.
It's pretty much the same anywhere. In the west (at least in the UK where I'm from), whilst there tends to be a niche sort of drug culture in the younger generation, and some people are more accepting of it, the vast majority of people see drugs as disgusting, where as binge drinking is just a social activity.

+White Argentinian obviously because the west wants them lol
Yeah, the west fucking loves asian mafia and drug dealers. They love it so much that america is causing this an opioid crisis.

This list is pretty much spot-on. Speaking as a Chinese who is studying in the US, the way a lot of Westerners (not all of course) carelessly spend money really blows my mind. It just seems like a lot of them retain the spending habit of a rebellious 15-year-old throughout their entire lives.

Litch The Shinigami There is some truth in what you said, but I do acknowledge that there are many elements in Chinese culture that can be very toxic.
Chinese are very controlling. Just wait and see what happens with the CCP. They love to control.
More power!

"Don't tell me your are number 1" I like that guy.
Yes, only people who have lived here can fully understand
I was living in Korea, and whiletraining for a boxing charity event I shaved my head for convenience - my Korean girlfriend then filled me in on why everyone was looking at me funny: apparently Koreans shave their heads to repent for doing something terribly shameful..
I grew my hair back out lol
Interesting. Its neat finding out little cultural things like that.
Executing people for marijuana use while alcohol and tobacco abuse is encouraged. Seems pretty hypocritical.
Yeah I'm pretty sure they're drugs too
RCXDerp something western media says about China might be true, but there's absolutely no drug allowed and no drug at all! We've already paid enough for drug use that the entire population hates drug...
Search Google for "the opium war"
And also, since tobacco and alcohol is a normal thing, young Chinese growing up never give a fvck about that, it's so common that they don't care. (It's like daily common, not like craze common) So actually there's not a lot of people addicted to anything... Except for video games or anemei...
Comparing alcohol and marijuana is like comparing orange and apple. They are not the same.
@@安荣-f5g Hence, completely hypocritical. What a backward nation.

I'm a white westerner and I personally have never understood people wearing shoes in their house (or other people's houses). It brings in dirt and whatever else you've stepped in (ex: dog poo). That's kinda gross in my opinion.
only americans do that... europeans take them off
Yea as a blue collar worker that has to wear steel toed boots if I have to take off my boots to enter your home I’m leaving and I won’t be back ( I wear good wool socks and I’m not destroying them on your nasty floor) I put my boots on before work and when they come off I’m getting a shower and getting in bed
Also do not take your shoes off in my house- you don’t live here
It’s just a realistic respect issue
petty
fffff I’m a Canadian and we take off our shoes also
I honestly think it's weird NOT to keep them on until you reach your room. You obviously don't walk around the house all day with them on... no one does that. Many Americans just don't take them off before they enter their house.
I’m a Singapore Chinese. You are good in the way you present, explains and discuss the topics.
Thanks mate
When discussing the attitudes to drugs, I'm amazed you didn't acknowledge China's history with opium addiction and the Opium Wars. That history would make any society pretty anti-drug.
Funny how it was their drug lords who started the supply of illegal Fentanyl that is killing so many young people in Canada.
You're amazed he didn't talk about a problem from 200 years ago? Really. Fascinating. The entire planet has a problem with opiates TODAY and the chemicals to make such drugs originate in where else? China.
The introduction of opium to China was what lead to the One Hundred Years of Humiliation.
Yes , The 5 Rights of China
1) In China the people have the Right to urinate anywhere they please , in my country I must look for a gas station
2) In China the people have the Right to eat any living thing , in my country I must go to MacDonald's
3) In China the people have the Right to counterfeit any countries merchandise , in my country I get it trouble
4) In China the People have the Right to be rude to everyone , In my country its too dangerous to be rude
5) In China the people have the Right to worship the Government , In my country I must go to church

In Finland we also take our shoes off inside. I guess it's due to climate, which leads shoes to often being pretty dirty or wet... And the shoes themselves are often quite big and bulky, especially during winter, so not very comfortable to use them inside.
We do that in Sweden as well, i'd never let anyone with shoes on inside my hoouse tbh
Greetings from another Jorma ....
There’s still a difference. I don’t know about China but in japan you take off your shoes before going in through the doorway. Where in most western places I’ve been you walk inside and there’s a place to put your shoes just inside the door.
From South Africa love your videos serpentza.
As a Tibetan, I can get along with Chinese but not their CCP Govt.
I hope your mental health is good right now.
@@mikabakker1 All things considered, what the west knows about China is 10x closer to reality than what orientals are taught about the west.

great video. love from China.
As soon as serpentza leaves China he lets the criticism of China fly XD
Thanks for another great video. Chinese people will appreciate what you have done here one day, at least I am. Would you want to talk about top 5 things we LIKE about each other? Happy Chinese New Year. Hope you had some dumplings tonight.

It's not only the Chinese who get asked weird questions. When I visited the USA only 12 years ago, I was asked if Australia has electricity.
When i visited New York in 2010, I was asked "Oh you're from Australia? How come your English is so good?" Seriously America?
Me too!! I was asked , "Where did you learn such good English?"I replied, "At school, but I'm still having trouble with it. Please feel free to correct me if I make grammatical errors." LOL
You're too humble @coralarch I don't see any issue with your English at all! I think the person I spoke to got Australia and Austria mixed up LOL.

I love the 'suspicious uncle' alerts
But I may be an exception
Point #5 - drug use - well.
As for point # 2, 3,4, 5
It’s not objective.

@Rudy Alfonsus, You are correct, this guy seems as if he's having difficulty adapting, or is he just being an arrogant man?
But if I’d known that it was on the itinerary I’d have covered my joints,
@@mikoto7693 Egyptians have a dress called galabya. This is very loose-fitting to your skin but adapts very well to both the cold at night and the warmth during the day and it covers you from head to food. Very practical, even though if you wear it as a foreigner, you might get stared at as this is not something most foreigners do.
@@mikoto7693are you from the us? So much entitlement ahahaahha, so they have to change their religion in order to adapt to your politically correct usa or western lifestyle? (I'm from the west and atheist so I'm not defending anyone)
I know I’m a pretty late lol. When I lived in china in 2012, the Chinese teachers I worked with were obsessed with Vampire Diaries lol. I love your videos btw! Very interesting 😀
Haha the children were so cute ! Always curious about there environment :)
They were shooting him. (watch it again and see).
@@zippypenny what did they call him?
@@shayrockmusic they kept saying something along the lines of zhende si le which means really die... I couldn’t make out the rest but these kids were literally wanting to kill him. Just goes to show indoctrination from a young age.
John Galt and their father said, eat him he is delicious. Winston said, 没事, which means I’m really juicy
If I buy something or sell something, I want whoever is on the other side of the transaction to feel good, not bad.
alex carter do you know Chinese mahjong? many Chinese are fond of it more than UA-cam.😁😁😁
Win-win will be the better long-term benefit, sadly that this doens't exist in a state(governments that use force in their people).
here's one thing people can't stand about China: Corona virus!
coronavirus in us
@Igotnoname Dontaskmewhy. Because of China.
They eat frog legs, spiders, dogs and bats. Then blame it on foreigner when they get sick from what they eat.
Likewise when the world hated the States for creating the financial crisis in 2008. But the difference is, there is no evidence that China created this virus, even National Geographic and Nature admitted it's a product of nature that only happen to create sickness first reported in China.
@@justbeyourself8515 COVID came from bats which always carry coronavirus. Half of the original patients who first tested positive for COVID in Nov 2019 in Wuhan said they visited the Wuhan wet market where they sell bats. If you have to eat a bat then at least cook it thoroughly. In China some not only don't cook it but eat live bats. 2008 housing crisis came about because Bush told banks not to consider income or credit history when reviewing loan applications for visible minority applicants which I guess included Chinese.
